Carotcake

The old music box was in the beast's closet. Blue and faded with the lock and the gold crank that looked like a butterfly. She hadn’t lost the key.

The little angel inside was pale and dusty. It had always been that way, painted a little off-color. 

The gold butterfly went tick-tick-tick-tick, and the beast held it there for a moment, pinched between her fingers. It was hard to hold onto because the mechanisms inside wanted it to turn back the other way, but she had turned it one way, and by the Witches she was going to keep it there. She kept a tight grip, but it just didn’t want to stay. Her smile stretched and pushed on her cheeks. Why didn't it want to stay?

Then it broke free and the little angel inside started to spin around. Its painted eyes were closed. It was spinning slowly at first but after the first note it spun faster and faster. It was okay, though. It was a doll, and dolls didn't get dizzy.

She smiled when she heard the sound. The music box had a quiet song like twinkling stars. To the beast's ears it was like looking at the quiet night sky after learning that some of the stars were already dead. She couldn't tell which ones weren't alive anymore because the light took a while to come down and tell her.

Takes place when the Ancients are still young adventurers. I imagine that White Lily wandered a lot in the woods when she was younger.

This is also inspired by how White Lily seemed to be interested in the faeries, but had never seen one in person before meeting Silverbell. I bet she would be delighted to know that she had helped out some faeries before, but it seems like these ones are too shy to say hello.
