She watches his face for any sign that sheโs taken it too far, become one of them. Sheโs not interested in his romantic past as a source of gossip; she just likes to know him. She gives a sad understanding sort of look.ย โChildren will make and break a relationship, I think.โ Oddly, the birth of her daughter was a stone thrown into the pond of her life that caused no ripples. They likely would have married anyway, a baby just hurried it along. The death of her daughter, however, was the glue that would forever hold James Murrey and Cecelia Holmes together. Grief has an odd way of bringing people closer, even ex-husbands and wives.ย
She takes another sip and then offers him back to the bottle, which is getting dangerously close to being empty. They might have to risk a dash inside to collect another bottle and risk being pulled into a conversation or a dance. With her now empty hand, she reaches out to rest it on his shirt collar, clasping the back of his neck ever so gently and stroking his hair with her thumb. An intimate but practised movement; she had done this before. She had sat on this step, with this boy and this champagne bottle all before. It was like coming home, a song that reminded you of summertime, the smell of your motherโs perfume.ย โIโll be your femme fatale any day of the week, darling. Just say the word.โ She grinned again and then let her hand drop, rubbing his back for a fraction of a second before setting about pulling a small weed out from between the stone cracks.ย โHowโs the family? As tempestuous as ever? I saw another one of your restaurants open up in Paris last week, congratulations.โย
Itโs such a gentle touch,ย given with the sort of nonchalance that comes with familiarity like theirs,ย but he finds himself turning into it.ย Like a birch tree bent to the sun,ย he seeks that brief warmth with a little too much zeal,ย admittedly.ย Celiaโs fingers fleetingly restย โneath the marring of his jaw before she retracts.ย Itโs easy-going,ย even with his apparent surprise - isnโt anything particularly new,ย just something his heightened nerves momentarily reach for.ย
โย Always so good to me,ย โย ย Returns the jest,ย before a more sour note returns.ย In truth,ย considering his close quarters with the family business,ย Oliver tends to avoid much of his closer relatives.ย Alice is the exception,ย of course.ย His sister remains something of an anchor for him,ย and even sat here he grounds himself at the though,ย heels pressing to cold stone.ย ย โย Oh,ย I wouldnโt know for the majority,ย โย ย Sheโs given a knowing look,ย some glint in the corner of his eye.ย Oliver takes his last steal of champagne,ย enough of a gentleman to offer her the last of it.ย It was her steal after all.ย What replaces the rim of the bottle is the cigarette.ย Heโll keep it balanced between his teeth.ย ย ย โย I tend to avoid those people for as long as possible.ย But yes,ย you shouldโve shown up - Alice wouldโve found you a seat,ย braised venison.ย โย ย Thereโs something never not a comfort about a working kitchen,ย heโs found.ย Good to focus,ย good to work.ย ย โย Iโve still got it.ย โ

โI remember.โ She pulls up her knees, wrapping one of her arms around her legs. Itโs still nice out but dress too nice for a jacket, sheโs starting to feel the chill. Not enough to tempt her back inside. She feels as if a spell has settled over them, a peaceful contemplative mood that she is eager not to end.ย โI was heartbroken. Uncerimously put the pin through her name when I put it up.โ She jabs at the air with concentration, reenacting the savage attack. She settles back into her lazy mood with a giggle and reaches to take the bottle back from him.ย
โYou know, Iโve heard about a dozen stories as to what actually happened between the two of you. One included a movie-style plotline of espionage and trickery.โ She looks over at him as she tips the bottle back into her mouth, eyebrows raised. Sheโs asking but not asking for him to fill in the blanks; doesnโt want to pry but wants to know. The editors giggles again and champagne runs down her chin. She catches it with the back of her hand and grins.ย โBest seat in the house; cold stone steps, stolen champagne. Oh, Iโm never giving this one up.โย
She makes him laugh,ย some little reticent thing hanging in his chest.ย The details of his nigh-marriage have never been released.ย Gossiped about,ย much so,ย though heโs only half aware as to the extent of said gossip.ย For Louisaโs sake more than anything.ย Oliver at the time wasnโt one to bother for headlines and articles and their mysterious sources.ย
โย Espionage?ย โย ย He balances his cigarette between his teeth,ย rolls it to one side,ย and exhales smoke with another laugh.ย ย โย I do look good in a tux,ย I suppose.ย It wasnโt -ย โย ย As if the notion that the gossip columns were incorrect in their assumptions should come as any surprise.ย ย โย It wasnโt all that exciting.ย โย ย They never fully recovered from their first loss,ย heโs since come to understand.ย Seventeen weeks of excitement,ย planning - that thrill of a new venture,ย torn right from under them.ย Oliver never thought himself the paternal sort until he was faced with possibility of living it out.ย Was just getting used to the idea when it all fell away.ย ย โย Grew apart after the baby anyway.ย And,ย well...,ย careers were more exciting than one another at the time,ย apparently.ย โย ย Not embittered,ย good-natured.ย Both came to the conclusion on their own.ย Celia earns a pointed look,ย he sneaks the bottle away from her again like itโs some dance their performing;ย to one,ย then the other.ย ย โย Hate to disappoint.ย Would you mind being the femme fatale for the book release?ย Thatโs why I left it;ย the gossip was far more thrilling.ย โ
CELIA ;
She gives a wet laugh that might be mistaken for a sob but when she speaks, her voice is steady.ย โAh, love. When did it die?โ She hands over her bottle and looks back out towards the garden, sky reflected in tiny bulbs and hedgerows. She wonders who planned the event; mother or daughter? Cee knows the type; society mothers. Pushy is a kind word to describe them. Her own mother was a saint but itโs hard to imagine what she would have been like with adult children. Violet Holmes would never age past thirty-seven. Maybe thatโs what had brought on Celiaโs sense of impending doom. In September she would be the age her mother was when she died. Itโs hard to imagine her life past that point, even unconsciously.
โYou came close to all this, didnโt you?โ Her tone suggests sheโs just remembered, pulling her eyes away from the lights and back to his face. The thought occurs to her again; sheโs always liked that face. Maybe they would have made it half-way down the aisle if it wasnโt for bad timing, or good timing as the case may be. Maybe Ceceliaโs second-husband took the fall of Oliver and married her at her craziest. Still, they would have had very cute kids.ย
โย Only close,ย โย ย He affirms,ย something tight coiling in his throat.ย Regret is serpentine,ย heโs learned;ย canโt manage it,ย canโt stop it.ย It worms its way through your body on its own.ย By that notion,ย Oliver is practically a viperโs pit on legs.ย ย โย Two weeks,ย I think.ย โย ย He says it like itโs a trick to recall,ย but it sits like a spark right before his eyes.ย Just like everything else these days.ย He scratches the zipper-line of his jaw,ย habit formed;ย doesnโt know if itโs nerves or the drink.ย He cants her head to her,ย takes a swig.ย Champagneโs not too bad,ย he notes.ย ย โย ย ------ You were invited.ย โ
These events have a habit of begetting the nostalgic,ย the dour dose of what-ifs and how-soโs.ย He thinks himself less glum these daysย - working your passion and negating the rest does that to you -,ย but here thereโs something reticently appealing about being sat,ย bottle between them,ย smoke in the air,ย familiar,ย even.ย Wouldnโt be the first time theyโve been caught with a snatched bottle and far too many cigarettes.ย Backdrop is pleasant this time around,ย and he thinks maybe with fine company,ย it doesnโt all have to be quite so dire.ย ย โย Probably wouldโve still ended up on some steps with you and a pack of fags at some point in the day;ย โย ย Itโs good-natured,ย tone says always a pleasure,ย ย โย always been a habit.ย Think itโs a vice?ย โ
CASE ;
dog ?ย dog ?ย ย DOG !!ย ย all coherent thoughts are out the window , congrats !ย ย pretty sure the dog will knock him over , thatโs alright though , itโll be the best kind of death .ย unsteady legs do their best to prepositionย & keep his balance.ย nearly fails twice , doesnโt matter, heโs in love .ย ย whoโs oliver lucas anyway ?ย ย one hand gently finds its way under the beastโs head ,ย ย gently scratches chest with childlike wonder in his eyes .ย
ย ย ย ย ย โย oh , thatโs nice .ย ย ย guess itโll be alright if i keep this beauty all to myself then !ย โ
โย Not quite,ย โย ย Thabo does a sharp lap about Alexโs legs,ย every step a reticent thump against the ground,ย offers a low,ย friendly rumble from the centre of his chest,ย ere he turns back whence he came.ย His vigil is at Oliverโs side,ย apparently a position heโs tapered to.ย The return of one Alex Case has put Oliver at something akin to disadvantage;ย the mind slows,ย and his periphery blurs.ย Everything ahead of him is just a little too sharp,ย but a butt to the thigh from the mastiff anchors him somewhat.
โย Heโs,ย uh,ย somewhat required.ย Safe to say you came for the possibility of a dog,ย and not something altogether more ominous?ย โ

CELIA ;
Celia had attended so many society weddings and christenings in the last six months, they were all becoming one blur of white tulle and champagne hangovers. Christenings were always slightly more depressing than weddings because at least that still seemed vaguely achievable. Someone would want to marry her someday! Actually, that wasnโt the problem; it was the staying married that had yet alluded her. The fact that her next wedding out her fourth (even if she hadnโt technically married the third guy, there was still a wedding, she had still worn white) was the final straw that drove her outside with a bottle of champagne. The party continues on inside, but the sound was somewhat muffled by the thick walls of the old house. Cee sat the bottom of the garden stairs, watching the fairy lights twinkle throughout the bushes when Oliver made her jump. She looks up, blowing her cigarette smoke away from him.ย โFuck no. If Iโm left alone any longer, Iโll do something drastic. Likeโฆ hook up with a groomsman or something.โ She offers a bright little grin and pats the stone next to her.
โDid her dad really say the couple had been together for seven years? Only I am sure that the groom and I got together at a party likeโฆ maybe two years ago. And like a year before that too.โ Now not only did she feel sad and lonely, she felt really slutty too! What a night!ย
Gets a little too claustrophobic he finds,ย all that jubilation.ย A little right around the throat.ย Oliver doesnโt do weddings;ย the celebrations,ย drunken in-laws,ย speeches.ย If you were to ask him heโd say that he didnโt even do his own.ย And he didnโt - another lost cause,ย time wasted,ย the story brandished about in a flurry of pages when the wind blew past the newspaper stand.ย Oliver doesnโt do weddings.ย Which is why heโs found himself outside.ย Itโs a pretty picture,ย canโt deny it.ย The rich tend to thrive on their hedge-mazes that arenโt actually hedge-mazes as opposed to filling their garden space with something useful,ย but the lights are a distraction,ย supposed to resemble stars,ย probably.ย They do,ย he supposes.ย The image is finished off best,ย however,ย by one Cecelia Holmes,ย a rather morose statue sat silhouetted against those faux stars.ย Pretty picture.ย Oliver offers a fleeting laugh,ย sits himself alongside,ย and pulls a pack of Malboro from the inner pocket of his suit jacket.ย ย โย Happy to be of service,ย as always.ย โ
The lighterโs always lit for just a little longer than necessary with him,ย like he takes his moment of peace with every pull of his thumb.ย ย โย Ah.ย Thatโs alright,ย โย ย Head canted,ย soft timbre,ย he blows a plume,ย ย โย she and I have definitely had a rendezvous in their library in the last half-decade.ย โย ย He piques a brow at her,ย and a gestures for the bottle sheโd been thoughtful enough to bring with her.ย ย ย โย So,ย there,ย weโre both shit people.ย Pass us,ย โ
CASE ;
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โย iโm way too short to evenย threaten to ruffle your hair out of affection ,ย ย unless youโd be opposed to bending down a bit ?ย โย ย ย just a joke , he knows without a doubt itโs not on this realm of possibilities .ย ย ย โย or maybe youโd give your bro a hug ?ย ย โ
Perhaps as to be expected,ย Oliver barely moves.ย Where his arms are folded across his chest his fingers fidget,ย and instead of keeping their eye-contact,ย he glances down.ย A mastiff sat alongside hears a whistle,ย and swiftly moves forth.ย Paws larger than Alexโs own hands fly up and rest themselves on the lads forearm.ย Itโs as close as heโll get to what heโs after,ย and the pique of Oliverโs brow declares as much.ย
โย You know me,ย Case;ย still much too busy for affection.ย โ

ย ย ย โ Iโm not above walking out of here if this speech keeps going on like this. โ Itโs not a threat, sheโd rather stay and get a needed break from an office that has a growing stack of sometimes credible sightings.ย โ I thought things like this was supposed to be fun. โ
โย Is a speech not synonymous with a lecture?ย โย ย Out of the corner of his mouth,ย somewhere between his teeth,ย sardonic timbre lingers just above that of a whisper.ย Like school children they should be parked at the back,ย so as not to disturb.ย Though Oliver agrees with her sentiment,ย heโs far more familiar with the phraseย โgrin and bear itโ,ย it seems.ย ย โย Not even a complimentary glass of champagne in sight...ย โ
Did do a thing,ย if youโre interested.ย Please be interested.

For Cecelia, her work calendar has always been slightly more exciting that her social calendar. She, somehow, became the face of the Holmes family, although, with Sherlockโs inability to make small talk and Mycroftโs near self-imposed isolation, itโs understandable. This means every charity gala, auction or dinner invite is passed into her, usually with a generous cheque signed by her father attached. It was important, he reminded her, to keep up appearances. How could she complain? It was a chance to dress up, to play-act and most people there were friends anyway! However, these people were not her friends.ย
In the corner of the ballroom, she discreetly rechecked her invite for a third time, confirming once last time that the charity was definitely what she thought it was. While most people here were only doing it to keep up the pretence of being good kind people, it wouldnโt do to actually forget what they were raising money for. She glanced up to check she wasnโt being watched but, as a group moved in front of her, a face caught her eye. To say he was an old friend might have been pushing the limits of that word but years of moving in the same circles had insured a certain sense of comradery. They had also, Cee knew, landed on the same page of the Daily Mail or The Sun way back when; usually for drinking too much and looking like a bit of an idiot while trying to hail down a taxi cab outside a Soho bar at 3am.ย
โYou donโt call, you donโt write,โ she begins, offering out the champagne glass she had snagged from a passing waiter.ย โI heard a rumour you were back from the dead.โย
This is familiar,ย but only to a certain degree these days.ย Oliverโs struggled to slot himself back into what is essentially a well-oiled machine,ย but it seems blue is a bastard to rid the blood of.ย Perfumed as the air is,ย he takes a long inhale of it.ย Gold trim and low lights hide him well enough,ย he thinks,ย once the small talk and the gasps are far from him.ย Too many people have touched him,ย run their fingers along the zipperline of his jaw,ย gawked at the surgeonโs mastery.ย A precise art indeed,ย they say.ย You should have seen the fucking pteranodon,ย he thinks.
But he is,ย in his own way,ย a master of the sly charm.ย Jests that which hold no weight,ย no matter how gaudy the laughter in the wake of such.ย Fits in like an old part,ย the fractals of him all buttoned up,ย donned with a bow.ย Oliver wants a cigarette.
โย Ah ---ย โย ย And it takes a second,ย or two,ย for him to erase the thought when faced with someone familiar.ย She is something of a balm,ย though just as suited to the ostensible circus as the rest of them.ย Oliver huffs into a dram of whiskey.ย ย โย Sorry,ย signal is justย abysmal in the underworld.ย โย ย Wry timbre,ย rolls from the tongue like water,ย or acid,ย but the smile is nigh-genuine - as genuine as they ever are upon his face now.ย Heโll take her like a breath of fresh air,ย some rare gem in within the squalor.ย ย โย In my defence,ย I donโt recall a card signed by yourself dropping through my door,ย nor so much as flowers.ย โ
