Marriage is a relief and sacred and hard work (but that part is not a surprise), and a completion and being stupid together in the kitchen and laughing at each other’s lame jokes and being able to tell what the other is thinking by a meeting of the eyes across the room. Marriage is a support and a warm bed and sadness when you have to give up your old lives and saying “I’m sorry” and cleaning the kitchen without being asked even though you’ve cleaned it every day that week. Marriage is getting up together at 5:45 most mornings even though you don’t want to and learning to choose your battles and getting annoyed at each other over the most insignificant infractions and making up after arguments and respecting that the other person had a life before you. Mostly, though, marriage is stumbling through life with your best friend and holding each other through the night and never having to say goodbye and some of the biggest, most soul-stretching, fulfilling experiences (and fun) I’ve ever had.
