The Impossible is a film that follows the true story of one families struggle in the aftermath of the worst tsunami in human history. Starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts and featuring newcomers Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast.
While the tsunami itself is frighteningly well recreated, it doesn't overshadow the film, instead the intense emotion and brilliant acting of everyone involved brings you into it on a level that, at times, isn't easy to cope with and at other times will have you nearly bubbling over in sheer joy.
That's something this film does spectacularly well, at times the bleakness of a situation can really make you feel a pit in your stomach. These scenes can be very gruesome, not by using copious amounts of gore, but by making it feel real. You feel everything these people go through, and it can get pretty tough to watch.
It is balanced out with points that will have you in tears of pure happiness, again this is down to the acting talent on show and also the film’s ability to make it feel real. After all the things that, not only the main family but everyone, have went through it is genuinely heartwarming to see even the smallest victories.
As I have said there is not a poor performance on show here but special mention goes to Tom Holland who plays the eldest son, Lucas. One to watch, he stood out for me, partly because there was so much more asked of him than the other kids, but he handled it well. The portrayal of Lucas having to step up to the plate to help his mother through it all was really great to watch and his reactions to certain events raised them up a notch to be as powerful as they could be.
This film will most likely make you cry, for one reason or another, you might want to wait for it to come out on DVD so you can pause from time to time when it starts getting too much to handle. But this is a film of real quality, most likely it will be up for some awards and deservedly so.
