In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II, the theological faculties of The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, and the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University present a public lecture series in Fall 2012: The Unfinished Agenda of Vatican II.

Series speakers from around the United States will explore significant conciliar topics including Ecumenism, Collegiality and Synodal Governance, and Laity and Lay Ministry.  The first six lectures will feature the following distinguished speakers: Fr. Joseph Komonchak, Ph.D., Mary Ann Donovan, S.C., Ph.D., Arthur G. Holder, Ph.D., Sally Vance-Trembath, Ph.D., Frederick J. Parrella, Ph.D., and T. Howland Sanks, S.J., Ph.D.  Each lecture will invite listeners to consider how the church of the 21st century may continue the agenda of the Second Vatican Council. Fall 2012 - Spring 2013.

Embargoed until 2000, Yves Congar's private journal of the day-to-day deliberations of the Council reveals his frustrations with the powerful personalities who impeded his efforts during the four-year process of Vatican II. Yves Congar was a prominent theologian of Christian unity (ecumenism) who suffered exile and censorship by Rome.

Yet the eminent historian of Vatican II, Fr Joseph Komonchak, in Australia to launch the first English translation of Yves Congar: My Journal of the Council, gives his assessment of Congar as one of the most important theologians of Vatican II, a fact Congar himself barely recognised. Includes excerpts from Congar's journal.

On 18 May, a bail request by Somyot Prueksakasemsuk was denied yet again and the Constitutional Court dismissed his petition to seek its ruling on the constitutionality of Section 112 of the Criminal Code, or the lèse majesté law.

Somyot was denied bail for the 10th time since he was arrested and detained in 30 April 2011, according to his lawyers. This time, bail was sought with a guarantee of 3 million baht, including his personal assets worth two million baht and one million baht cash from the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection under the Ministry of Justice.

The court dismissed the request, saying that the reason for the denial had already been clearly explained previously and there was no reason to change the decision. Kharom Pholphonklang, Somyot’s lawyer, said that the defence had sought bail for Somyot yet again because they saw that the trial was already finished, and it would take so long for the verdict to come out, as the court had announced that it had to wait for the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of the lèse majesté law as had been requested by the defence.

There would probably be no more bail requests, he said.

Addressing the Italian Movement of Christian Workers and other lay movements, Pope Benedict noted that their mission is to spread the Gospel through voluntary work which includes aiding those in need both in Italy and in other countries throughout the world, as well as defending human rights, promoting social justice and education.

Pope Benedict underlined that fact that their establishment can be attributed to the inspiration of Pope Paul the VI who as a priest and then Pope had been a vocal supporter of ecclesial associations such as these.

He also stressed the importance of the laity to the church in both the private and public sphere of society, adding that their selfless contribution was vital in the promotion of cultural action, human dignity and aiding those in need.

The Pope also told those present volunteering in whatever field it may be, was an irreplaceable resource and the true meaning of being Christian. True giving, said Pope Benedict, is not something laid down by law or an economic acquisition. In fact, the Holy Father explained it is the economy, and politics that is in need of people capable of mutual giving In concluding remarks the Pope urged that the Associations present to look to young people, who he said are seeking more than ever ways of engagement that combine idealism and practicality.
