I have a pretty large portion of a Summer Camp AU typed out that I might one day get around to editing and publishing. Iāve also been tossing around a āJoel and Ellie keep going west after the Fireflies try to cut out her brain AUā and a couple of āmissing momentsā (or maybe just some straight up fix-itās) when it comes to season 2. Sorry, stupid question, itās probably obvious, but does Ellie know the truth about āthe lieā in your fic āIt's a long way backā? I feel like she does, but at the same time I feel like she doesnāt, and now Iām just wracking my brain trying to remember whether thereās a hint Iāve missed or if itās meant to be ambiguous.
Not a stupid question at all!! Itās been mentioned a few times throughout but never discussed at length i donāt think. So very fair that it got lost in the sauce of the 100k+ words that this fic somehow is.
To answer your question, yes! Ellie does know about the lie and what the actual truth is in this instance. I have not written a scene surrounding the how or why of her finding out though. This will play a bit more of a factor in some of the chapters to come, but in all honesty I feel like Iāve already written the fall out from āthe lieā so much that although I know it is relevant, I didnāt want it to carry a huge amount of the conflict or motivation when it came to this fic. Especially since theyāve got enough other things going on to accomplish those things!

Every single Major League Baseball team has a Pride Night in June, except one: the Texas Rangers. Why they choose not to have a pride night is their business but there is one team who saw that and decided to take it personally.
And for the last few years, the Baltimore Orioles have scheduled their pride night during a home game in June when the Texas Rangers are visiting.
There may come a day when the Orioles are not playing a home game vs the Rangers in June. If that happens, I sincerely hope another team will step up and schedule their Pride night with equal pettiness.

The second-choice theme in this story is really hitting hard. Itās painful being inside Ellieās mindāseeing how little she thinks of herself, how sheās always fighting for her place. What I canāt get over is Joel leaving when she was about to die. That line about how if Sarah hadnāt been there, he wouldāve never left Ellieās side really gutted me. I understand why he went after Sarah, but Iām still so mad. Ellie was dying, probably calling out for him, and he still chose Sarah. So when Ellie feels like a second choice, it doesnāt feel irrationalāit feels real. As a reader, I felt it too.
And just to be clearāthis isnāt a criticism of your story at all. I love it so much I refresh the page about twice a day! Itās good because itās heartbreaking, because itās frustratingly realistic, because itās complex in the way that only something written with empathy, intelligence, and soul can be. I canāt wait for more!

The messiness of these unexpected circumstances was really the highlight of writing this fic for me!
I agree, Joel made the wrong decision. He doesnāt see that at the time of making it because his judgment is so clouded and his concept of Ellie is that sheās hurt, but he doesnāt think for a second she could die. Again, this is probably more to do with his own scattered line of thinking than founded on any of the evidence laid out in front of him. He chooses wrong when faced with a decision that is impossible to really pick right. That moment in and of itself was very important to me, and Iām glad it brought up emotions for you! Now itās a struggle of finding balance while also working through the guilt he feels for both everything with Ellie AND twenty one years missed with Sarah. My man is not having a good time while heās also been gifted the greatest miracle anyone could ask for all in one go.
Thereās really just so much to explore and different variations on these relationships to take and Iām trying to balance writing all there is I want to, while also keeping this thing an actual readable length š It makes me so happy to know that you are enjoying reading this fic and again I really appreciate you taking the time reaching out to me in regards to it!
