My brother took these pictures with his iPhone. The 'click' sound, or whatever sound an iPhone makes when it takes photos, woke these two cuties up. They don't look too happy though.
Amber's been a lot nicer to Adam lately. She's starting to let up on her downstairs territory. She still slaps Adam around but at least she can stand to be downstairs while he's there too. Adam, as always, remains oblivious to Amber's feelings about him.
You can see from these photos that there's a wee bit of bedception going on. These two really like to sleep on my brother's bed. The problem is that they like to sleep on or right next to my brother, making it nearly impossible for him to get a comfortable spot to sleep. He decided to move their cat beds onto a corner of his bed. Now they can sleep on his bed, but also have their own beds. All three of them can rest easy now.
It was ~70 degrees outside but Igby the Dachshund was wearing a winter sweater on her cute, petite body. She was naked when I first arrived at Thuy's house but wanting to show off how much cuter Igby could be with clothes on, Thuy had run off to find the sweater and wrapped it around Igby's torso. The little dog didn't even try to wrestle her way out of the garment; she knew her fate was sealed.
She had probably been manhandled to wear this particular sweater countless times before and knew better than to try and avoid it. She pretended it was a continuation of her natural coat, allowed herself five seconds to stare out of the window in despair, and went back to jumping around and barking like a little devil.
It was a beautiful, albeit a warm day for January, and we didn't want to waste it and Igby's sweater. We journeyed into the backyard and I watched as Thuy tried to camouflage Igby from the black cat that lurked in the bushes outside of her gate.
'You want to take some pictures,' I asked Thuy.
'I'm gonna take pictures of you and Igby! Pick her up,' Thuy screamed in delight at the thought of me falling in love with her dog for the umpteenth time.
This was the only photo where I looked like a human.
Thuy looks a lot better holding Igby, don't you think?
After a few hours sitting inside and looking at designers' websites, Igby's barking and whining made Thuy realize that maybe it was time for us to walk her. It's a shame that dogs haven't evolved to use the commodes yet.
A woman passed by in her car and stared Igby down like she had just seen Jesus walk on water. What, you've never seen a dog wearing clothes before?
Clare and I went to Baker St. Pub yesterday and while there, we got surprised with a game of Rock and Roll Bingo. Each person received four bingo cards:
1970-1979
1980-1989
1990-1999
TV Themes
On Clare's 'TV Themes' card, we saw that there was 'Supernatural' on there. We're both big fans of the show and after all these years of watching it, we couldn't really put our finger on what the theme was. Was it 'Carry On My Wayward Son', played only at the beginning of every season finale? Was it that loud bursting 'psssshhhhshshsh' at the beginning of each episode during the title card?
When bingo ended and we both lost every round, the DJ managing the bingo game came over to collect comment cards and we asked him about it. He said something about instrumental music blah blah blah. Okay, guy. No idea what you're talking about. Am I really that unobservant that I didn't notice a theme song somewhere after all this time?
So I did what any normal person would do and I looked it up on YouTube. 'Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this thing! The thing! The thing they play at the ending.' And behold, the very first comment. I guess it's really not all that special but the fact that he (or she) is so nonchalant about going to jail is just hysterical to me. He/she is more upset about missing Supernatural episodes than spending time in the big house. I applaud your dedication.

I was incredibly intrigued with the 'buy as little or as much' concept Whole Foods had with their spices. Such a nifty idea for when you have a recipe which calls for a spice you probably won't ever use again. No need to buy a whole container of it. Too bad I don't have a Whole Foods near my house. :( I wonder if Central Market offers the same system, because Hubbell & Hudson doesn't.
I've always wanted to try Marmite or Vegemite. These tiny jars cost ~$5 each. No thanks. I think I'd hate it anyway.
Crab-stuffed avocados! Need I say more?
We were playing Pictionary at Michelle's house and Joe had a breakdown because his team members couldn't guess 'tic tac toe' ahead of our team.
Strawberry tarts Gun brought us from Dallas' Mozart Bakery.
Catching up on shows while waiting for class to start.
White sauce pizza with grilled chicken, mushrooms, onions, garlic, and basil. Basically a pizza version of chicken alfredo. From Grimaldi's!
Supernatural butter! I couldn't resist taking a picture.
I was doing my to-be-usual routine of sitting at a table in the hallway by the bathrooms and vending machines on the fourth floor of the North Building, watching endless episodes of The Office. (I have a goal to finish the available series by the end of January.) My earbuds were in and the volume was cranked up just a little bit higher than I would usually find comfortable. I can thank the girl on my left for that; she was constantly laughing to herself and slamming the wood part of a pencil on the edge of the table as though she were hoping ancestors from her motherland could interpret her poor Morse code.
From the corner of my eye, I saw the hundredth guy that hour walk into the men's bathroom. Two minutes later, I heard a rather loud, high-pitched popping/clicking sound interrupt one of Michael Scott's failed attempts at being funny. I thought nothing more of it and continued to side-eye every single character of The Office.
Three men walked by, laughing at some joke unknown to me and started talking to the bathroom door. What a bunch of weirdos. They left the same way they came. The second time they walked through, there was a lady cop with them. She was explaining places in the building so I assumed they were either new students or new workers. Again, they stopped in front of the bathroom door and it was the lady cop who spoke up this time.
'Sir, sir, are you okay in there? You're locked in?'
My very first thought was that I was in immediate danger. Some lunatic has locked himself in the bathroom and he's going to blow me to kingdom come. The very last thing I'm going to see is Andy Bernard wondering if he's gay. Then I thought that this guy is going to kill himself in the bathroom, twenty feet away from me! Then a mild thought of some custodian who had locked the door to do some basic cleaning and had fallen and couldn't get up. (Life Alert, y'all. But seriously, if you have Life Alert, you probably shouldn't be a custodian.)
'He went in there and then he called and said the door was locked. He can't get out,' said one of the men.
Oh, so that's what that loud click was! Some cruel person with a key (a staff member, a thief???) had casually walked by and locked the bathroom door during school hours. Poor guy. I checked the clock and noticed it had been half an hour since he'd walked in. I doubt men's bathrooms are that comfortable or clean either.
By now, another officer had joined the party and was telling the man inside to not panic. I was sad to not catch the resolution to this problem because it was time for me to go to my class with the Drunk Russian.
I wonder if he pissed himself.

There was a new addition to our family today. His name is Adam! He'll be turning four months next Sunday and he is basically a little ball of endless energy! He just runs in circles around my brother's room and doesn't seem to stop. He's so little that I can lift him up with one hand without any effort at all. I think my stapler weighs more than him.
I wanted to name him Apollo. The name actually stuck for most of the day until my brother admitted he didn't like it because all he could think of was Apolo Anton Ohno. I wanted it because Lee Adama. His name at the shelter was Sparky, which I find to be more of a dog's name but it suited him so well. He's just everywhere! My mom wanted him to have an 'A' name though because she didn't want to have to get another monogrammed stocking for him so he could share with Amber.
The blue collar really complements his gray and white coat.
Cleaning himself.
This was the picture on the shelter website that made me fall in love with him. The hat wasn't included so I'm gonna have to crochet him one because OH MY GOD. And to make sure Amber doesn't get jealous, I'll make her one too. I feel bad because I neglected her all day so I could get to know this little guy.
At PetSmart, he shared a cage with another cat which looked pretty similar but they weren't related. The other cat was actually the one my brother wanted to adopt but a couple had JUST adopted him when we got there. The two kittens were in their cage and Wrigley (the other cat) was cleaning Adam. It was so cute! Five minutes later, an employee removed Wrigley from the cage to go home with his new family. Adam looked so lonely after that and had nothing to do and no one to play with that he started dozing off. I got so sad that the two cats were separated that I literally started crying in front of his cage window. Just. Tears.
I can't believe I actually cried by myself in front of a cat cage in a PetSmart. I am pathetic. But the story has a happy ending! Adam got to come home with us and start a better life! :)
It's been like a year since she last curled up next to my leg and fell asleep so I sat still for as long as possible. When I couldn't stand it anymore, I wrapped her up in a blanket. She was so adorable, I couldn't pass up taking a picture of her from upstairs.
I hung out with my babies, Phong and Abigail, on Friday. Holly was supposed to join us but the jerkface ditched us last minute. We went all the way to Ra Sushi on Westheimer from North Houston for nothing because I forgot my ID at home and couldn't order a Dragon Bite. I cried all throughout dinner.
Abigail and her Shiso Naughty: an exotic blend of Skyy Pineapple vodka and X-Rated liqueur with fresh flavors of yuzu and Japanese shiso. Also a cameo of my arm and hands.
Abigail's thoughtful face. Phong's drunky face.
SHISO NAUGHTY
We each got Viva Las Vegas rolls along with different second rolls. I didn't take a picture of the VLV roll because I have before.
My Tootsy Maki roll: Kani kama crab mix, shrimp and cucumber rolled and topped with crunchy tempura bits; drizzled with a sweet eel sauce.
Abigail's Rainbow Roll: The classic California Roll is topped with tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, salmon & avocado to look like a rainbow.
Phong's Yellowtail Roll:Â Fresh yellowtail & Sriracha are combined with cucumber then rolled in seaweed & rice.
We dropped Abigail off because she's a pooface and didn't want to go bargain shopping with us, then headed off to REI and the mall! It was late so the hustle and bustle (and danger) of Black Friday had thinned out immensely. So had the available items. :(
Phong bought some expensive items for his bike from REI (a lock and some lights)! The price label for the lock said that it was $25, which seemed like an incredible deal for a U-lock and cable lock combo. We had hit the jackpot! It wasn't until we got to the register that we saw it was $47. Sigh. We can never have cheap, good things. Booooo.
When we got to the mall, Phong was still so down about the amount of cash he'd blown at REI that he just dragged his feet and cried about not being able to buy anything else. People behind us actually slipped and fell from the tears that had fallen from his face and created a puddle on the ground. Or he could have just wet himself. We'll never know; it's one of life's endless mysteries.
I got two things from two stores.
Pantone's Color of the Year (Tangerine Tango) nail polish set from Sephora and a black purse from H&M.
The set was alone in a clear, plastic box marked '$7'. I couldn't believe that anything from Pantone would be as inexpensive as $7 so I groveled at Phong's feet to ask a sales associate to check the price of the set. BEHOLD! A set of FOUR nail polishes for only SEVEN DOLLARS. Sold! :)
I didn't realize until after I had bought the bag that it had two sections, which only made me so much happier. I like how soft the faux leather is and that it has an adjustable skinny strap. The bag itself is not too big and bulky, but it is rather flat and a smaller size than my other bags. I can't wait until I leave the house again so I can use it!
Phong and I made a pumpkin pie cheesecake together last year and it was to die for! My mom asked me what I would be making for Thanksgiving and my mind instantly shot to this recipe. It's the flavors of autumn in a scrumdiddlyumptious cheesecake package.
Your cream cheese will need to be at room temperature. I forgot to set it out a few hours before so I filled a large bowl with warm water and placed my still-wrapped packs in it while I prepared the crust.
When I made this with Phong, we didn't have a food processor so we spent ten years crushing up the ginger snaps by hand in Ziploc bags. With my handy, retro, loud, sticky food processor at home, it took more or less two minutes to measure out the ingredients and press the button with a '2' above it.
When it's done, it will look so delicious that you'll want to just grab a spoon and shovel it all into your mouth. But stop! You need this for the crust for a cheesecake that will blow your top off!
Pour all of it into your greased springform pan and pack it down with your clean fingers. Push some onto the sides to create a 1-inch tall rim. Then bake in your oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes.
Now cream your softened cream cheese. Remember to scrape down the sides.
After the cream cheese is creamed, add the eggs one at a time. Then the brown sugar, pumpkin puree, vanilla, and spices.
Hey, remember that crust you just baked? After it had cooled down enough the handle, wrap the bottom of the pan in two sheets of aluminum foil to prevent major leakage.
Pour your cheesecake batter into the pan and place the pan inside another pan in the middle of your oven. This is for a water bath to prevent cracking on the top of your cheesecake. Pour some hot water into the bigger pan until the water level is about three quarters up the sides of the springform. (I didn't pay attention and the water was only about halfway so I had some cracking. Oh well, still tasted good.)
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60-70 minutes. I cooked it for 60 minutes, then turned off the oven, opened the oven door partially to let out the hot air and let the cheesecake rest in there for another 10 minutes.
The cracking became less apparent after it set overnight in the fridge because it wasn't as inflated with air from cooking.
Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake Recipe (from Closet Cooking)
Mix the gingersnap cookie crumbs, sugar, ginger and butter and press into the bottom and up 1 inch along the sides of a 9-inch greased springform pan.
Bake the crust in a preheated 350F oven for 5 minutes and set aside.
Cream the cream cheese.
Mix in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the brown sugar, pumpkin puree, vanilla, and spices.
Pour the mixture into the springform pan.
Bake in a preheated 350F oven until it is set, about 60-70 minutes.
Let it cool completely.
Chill the cheesecake in the fridge overnight.
I have no sliced pictures because I was too busy eating and watching family drama (e.g. some screaming and crying at the dinner table nbd) to take any photos that night.

So I finally turned 21 this year. I finally caught up with the rest of my friends. Since I'm in a different city from most of my friends, I had four different birthday "celebrations" (they were mainly dinners).
The first was with Trinh and Leon. We went to BJ's and just talked like we normally do on the rare occasions when we meet up. I need to make a better effort of keeping in touch with Trinh, especially since we live in the same city now.
The second was with Clare, on the actual day of my birthday. She treated me to dinner and drinks at Ra Sushi Bar! One of my favorite places! Here, I had my first ever legal drinks. We spent a good two hours here.
The third was in Austin with my bffsssss! I had dinner on Friday night with Abigail, Phong, Tasha, David, Chelsea, Thomas, James, Michelle, and Evan. Then we headed over to Abigail's and started the night. Bart and Terence ended up joining us about thirty minutes into the party. People played beer pong and a lot of us just sat around drinking and being social. I went downtown for the first time (I don't count Chelsea's birthday really) and we got a free round of drinks because this guy thought Michelle was attractive. There was some drama but all in all a good night.
Abigail, Phong, and I went to Georgetown to have lunch at Laurie's Tea House with Eddie and Priscila the next afternoon. I thought I would be going home right after so I had to hurry a little bit. Felt really shitty having to leave like that. :( But then somehow things changed and I ended up staying another night? Idek. Chelsea and I had a good heart to heart. Then Phong and I went to WINGZUP and ate in Tasha's room with Abigail. Slept early and woke up at 7am so Michelle and I could leave and get to her house before noon. Good weekend. Great weekend.
Abigail cooking eggs and mushrooms to help ease their hangovers.
I didn't get anymore good/worthy pictures from that weekend. :(
Fourth was with my mom and my brother. We went to Mi Cocina, my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant. However, it was a complete disappointment this time and I won't delve into it because it will just make me sad.
I bought two tickets to the Flo concert during the summer because I knew I wanted to go but not alone. So for Clare's birthday, I gave her one of the tickets. It was the most magical experience ever. I got to see an angel sing. :D
During one of her songs, she ran around the entire pavilion and so for two seconds, she was within two feet of me. I don't really have words to describe this concert. It's more like a huge amalgam of great feelings.
Someone gave her a Texas flag that says "Houston loves Florence"!
One day when we live together in a nice, modern, upscale apartment/house/domicile (bitch), we will get started on completing every single recipe in this book. This is not merely a suggestion. This is a demand. We are going to make this work.
Then we'll do the natural thing; we'll blog about it.
Love you,
Also hate you,
Your significant other,
Your life is hell when you're not with me,
SylviaÂ
