His birthday is a very difficult day for Lars. His mother’s death shaped his relationship with his father, left him carrying a tremendous amount of guilt and even contributed to his fear of abandonment, childbirth and intimacy I think, especially in the beginning of the movie, Lars would probably avoid certain events or things that bring up a lot of painful feelings and memories, his birthday being obviously one of them. So generally speaking, I think Lars would avoid it and maybe not even celebrate it at all. The Lars we meet in the beginning of the movie is someone who is very traumatized surrounding his childhood, and I feel like birthdays would be one of the things he’d avoid.

That being said, I think Karin would still be very insistent on celebrating it a little bit🥹 Nothing too big because I do still Karin would still try to respect Lars’ boundaries around his mother’s death BUT I think she would do small, meaningful things to him like cook his favorite meal or bring him a small gift that he has obviously difficulty accepting.
