Chapter 4
NOTES: He's such a diva. Need him biblically. also a quick chapter sorryyyyy
★ Song: My Own Worst Enemy - Lit
Warren Peace was a creature of habit. From sporting a bad attitude or a leather jacket, to drinking the same black coffee, reading at the same time in same spot during lunch everyday. The same disgruntled expression to ward off company. That's why, when company came anyway, he couldn't help but look up from his book to either rip into them or burn them to a crisp entirely.
You gave an awkward grin, placing your tray of food onto the table. His table. "Hey there!". Warrens brows furrowed, but he held back his initial instinct of violence. He looked around the room briefly, just to check that there wasn't a camera filming them for an episode of PUNK'D.
"Are you lost, Frost Freak?" He growls.
You gave a nervous chuckle. "Hah! Warren you are so funny!".
Warren leaned forward slightly, placing his elbows on the table, his heatwaves licking uncomfortably close to your sub zero homeostasis. "...did I-say or do anything last night that would make you think this is okay? Cause it's not." He grumbled, asking with a genuine curiosity underneath the remark. Dumbfounded at your brazenness.
Just then, your eyes dart to your peripheral, where Will and Gwen walked by, hand in hand to their own table, which now sported Will's cooler new hero friends. Warren takes note of this. "Looks like your boyfriend got a new girlfriend. Why aren't you over there playing their pet?" He gestures with a tilt of his chin.
Your smile falters slightly giving into the hurt by his comment- nevertheless: "Hah! So it's actually a really funny story, you're going to laugh!" You start.
"I hate jokes." Warren disregards coldly.
Your facade is up. Your fake smile drops. "Ok listen. Will asked Gwen to homecoming. And I may or may not have told him, in retaliation, that I was going with you, and now I need you to pretend to like me so that I can make him jealous" You sputtered out the information like FBI secrets, low and serious.
Warren stared at you through his hair. disturbed expression on his face. "The hell we are-" he starts. Just then, a loud and obnoxious laugh echos from Gwen at their table. Gwen plants a playful hit on Will as she threw her head back in an over the top act of flirtation. Will, responding gratefully to her performances like a moth to a flame.
Warrens eyes blink back to watch you, who was watching the whole thing. Warren couldn't help but recognize that same sad expression on your face that he had come to know last night. A weird part of him, gnawing with what was it exactly-pity? Something particularly offset by the whole thing. It was a feeling he didn't really enjoy, despite his typical appetite for others suffering. Your lost puppy act was admittedly pathetic enough to garner his sympathy.
But being thrown into something like this so dramatically against his will? Equally as upsetting. And he wasn't one for pity parties. Or taking in strays..
You turned back to face him. A pathetic pleading look in your eyes. Again, something so bright and blinding it made you even more obnoxious to look at. "Please Warren...I promise to make this as painless as possible. I just need to convince will we're together until Homecoming. And then you never have to talk to me again."
Until homecoming?! That was three weeks away!
Warrens eyes narrowed on you skeptically. Lasering in again to see if this was some prank or ruse. Unfortunately, for him, there wasn't an inch of deception on your innocent face. Just pure desperation. Warrens curiosity was swirling. You must really want this to be coming to him for help.
"And what's in it for me exactly?" He questions bitterly, at the pure fact that he was even considering this.
"Well-I mean, you hate Will right? That's just it- I make him want me, and you get to fuck with him. Simple as that." You state matter of factly.
"And after homecoming, it's done, over with, and you leave me the hell alone?" He rubs his forehead with his hand, still in shock that he's about to agree to this.
You nod desperately. "Forever and ever. Promise."
Warren studies you for a beat. This total prissy ice princess with a sick infatuation with his arch enemy. Hair blindingly white, borderline illegal levels of ice manipulation at her fingertips, completely hopeless gaze.
He sighs heavily, "Fine. I'll do it." Immediately following his statement, he leans forward, back into the icy space of your. His bemused expression drops to his typical brooding tone. "But I'm not renting a Tux."
Before you can fully react, Warren gathers himself, and departs from the table, disappearing into the halls, accidentally leaving behind his copy of Kafka on the table. Amongst your shock of his reply, you apprehensively palmed it into your hand. Didn't take Warren for a Kafka lover....
You glanced back over to Wills table, in time to catch a glimpse of him, having watched them just moments ago. He lingered on you for a second, a far off look in his eyes. Something confused and unsettled. You flicked your attention away.
It was clear that this was already bothering him. This stupid, crazy plan may actually work. You'd just have to get through it without being seared alive.

Chapter 3
NOTES: quick builder chapter sorry
★ Song: The Good Kind - The Wreckers
When you stepped off the bus the next morning at school, Will wasn't at the usual meeting spot; The gang sat scattered about the front steps. As soon as Layla and Magenta saw you, their faces lit up in that signature sweet expression that screamed 'spill all the details!' .
"So?! How was your romantic Chinese getaway with Will last night?" Magenta writhed her eyebrows teasingly. Layla clasped her hands together, eager for information.
You couldn't hide the way your face fell. "Ohhhh...you know.."you gave a thin lipped smile.
The girls take note of your sullen expression. "No-we don't, that's why we're asking, duh." Magenta retorts. Layla smiles softly. "Did you guys have fun?". You hesitated, chewing on your words for a moment before sighing. "Well...actually Will uh...he didn't show."
"What do you mean? He bailed?"Magenta questions. "No, no I think-well I think he just..got stuck in traffic or something."
"He didn't tell you?" Layla presses lightly. You bit into you lip. Almost as if the reality that would paint will in a bad light was worse than being bailed on. You didn't want Will to be viewed poorly.
"I mean I haven't heard anything yet, I'm sure he'll tell me today at school and it will all be some funny story." You clung to a hollow grin. Magenta and Layla cut you off in your tracks, arms folded.
"Will stood you up?"
You cringe at the words. Stood up. Your body language betrayed your intent to conceal the truth. "I mean..I guess you could call it that.." you shrugged. Layla shakes her head in disbelief. "I am so disappointed. This is not like him at all." Her expression mulling over the memory of her old friend. Magenta snorts bitterly, "Let's be honest, will hasn't been "Will" ever since he got his powers." The three of you collectively ruminate on the true statement, although you hadn't known him as long, this did seem to be the reality.
"Hey guys!" Will voice permeated the heated discussion. "..Hey.." you greeted him with an apprehensive smile. Layla and Magenta eyed you suspiciously before giving the both of you your space.
"You are not going to believe it I have to tell you something!" He beams.
"Is it that you saved all those stuck kittens in a tree that took so long last night?" Magenta folds her arms as her and Layla begin to walk away. The jab flys over wills head. "Um...no...it's about Homecoming!"
You anchored yourself to hear wills excuse for last night and that everything between you guys was okay, and that afterwards, you might still have a chance to ask him to Homecoming.
"Oh my gosh, me too!" You grinned excitedly. Being next to Will was enough to recharge your light for him, you were completely ready to accept whatever dumb excuse he had to shill.
Will sports a similar flair of excitement. "Ok, sorry-you first!" You remark quickly with the playful push of his arm.
"I'm going to homecoming with GWEN GRAYSON!"
All the blood in your body freezes over. Your legs feeling suddenly heavy. So he HAD asked Gwen Grayson after all....After stalling for a moment to process the news, you tried to push your gears forward and manage a hollow smile. The smile that had begun to fool Will extremely easy. "WOW....Will...that's awesome." You affirmed falsely. Will basked in your approval.
"Can you believe it? I'm going to homecoming with the most amazing girl at Sky High! I'm totally stoked!" He boasted, light on his feet.
"Totally.." you echoed, mind up in smoke.
You proceeded to allow Will to drone on about the amazing impromptu date he had with Gwen last night at his house when she seemingly showed up in thin air. Each word, twisting the knife a little further. You walk to class together, Will, doing the heavy lifting of the conversation. Still, Will had not yet acknowledged his absence at the paper lantern, if the entire affair had been in your head. You wanted to bring it up but had hardly been able to get a word in. Until you both paused in front of wills locker. "Oh yeah, you were going to tell me something too! What's your homecoming news?" He asks. Your chest feels tight, the blood rising to your face as you tried to pave over your own emotions. "Oh- I uh...I'm going too!" You grin.
"Oh! that's great! With who?"
"With who?"
"Yeah, like who's your date?"
"Oh! My date!" Your brain stalls. The emotions of it all, coming up in your throat like bile.
"Uh...Warren Peace!"
You almost float out of your own skin as the words hit your own ears. Fuck, why did I say that?!
Wills face is struck with shock and almost disgust.
"What?!"
The class bell suddenly trills out through the hall. "Yup. See you at lunch." You swiftly spun on your heel to leave. Will slams his locker shut, following after.
"Sorry-did I hear you say you're going with WARREN PEACE? Like-evil pyro maniac Warren Peace?"
You could only continue beelining to your class. "Yup."
Wills frustration and disbelief was palpable. "YN!What are you, crazy?! That guy is a psychopath!"
You refuse to look at him a stony gaze as you trudged forward. "He's actually not that bad."
Wills hand roughly catches your arm, yanking you still with his strength. "What the hell are you talking about? Since when were you best friends with Warren Peace?!"
That's it. Your patience had all but dissolved. You shot an icy stare to will, facing him now in his grip.
"Last night. Paper Lantern. 7 Pm." You snap.
You generate an icy frost along wills grasp on you, encouraging him to release. The horrified look of realization on his face. You tear away from him and bolts into class, leaving Will behind to marinate in it all.
Chapter 2
NOTES: thx if ur still reading lmfaooooo
★ Song: High and Dry - Radiohead
While it wasn't specifically a date, you spared no expense at looking your best for Will. A little bit more makeup, nothing fancy, just extra blush and icy hues around your eyes. Subtle but enough to make them pop.
You swapped your usual white Henley long sleeve for a flowy blue blouse and cardigan. Your hair, remained in its usual flow of glittering white blonde to the middle of your back.
The idea of just being alone with Will Stronghold in such an intimate setting was a thrill all its own, not to mention it was his idea. Was it true then? That he had been flirting with you these past two weeks? It wasn't all in your head? That maybe he had brought you under his wing for more than just good Samaritan-ism? Not to mention he was taking a chance with his reputation on a freakazoid Junior like you.
"Are you ready to order?" The waitress studied the still empty seat across the booth from you. Her eyes flicking between the two.
You smiled, apologizing to the waitress again. "Not quite, they'll be here any minute. Thanks."
You glanced at your phone. It was only 7:45, surely will had gotten caught up in a bit of evening traffic or a conversation with his parents. He would come soon.
When 8:25 rolled around, the waitress had rounded her way for the third time, now sporting a rather unfriendly and justifiable either order something or get lost kind of look.
"Um...I'll just give them another minute. Sorry.." you said softly cowering into your water cup. The waitress gave an annoyed sneer before returning to the kitchen again.
It wasn't much longer before you accepted Will would not be showing up. When the waitress made her fourth appearance, you opted to finally order yourself a few spring rolls, although your appetite had completely frozen over.
Was this typical behavior for Will? To stand a girl up? It didn't seem like him..Clearly whatever he was doing now must have been important for him to not show like this. Surely.
Your pity party was interrupted by a deep voice.
"Still working on that?"
Your eyes flicked up to a tall muscular figure looming over the table. You examined him for a moment before you realized who it was. Warren Peace. You had half a brain to not let your shock show on your face.
"Hey.." you greeted him with a familiarity in your voice.
His eyes studied you for a moment. His lack of expression prompted you to remind him how you knew him. "We go to school together."
"I know." He deadpanned. Of course he knew who you were.
Oh...you blanked at his flat demeanor.
"You're Strongholds friend." He added.
Your weren't sure whether to be grateful or offended that he knew you as just Will stronghold's friend. Nevertheless, right now, it was embarrassing.
"Yeah.." you confirmed, caving into yourself a bit.
"Yeah...." He echoed.
The awkward tension between you both was palpable. Warren wasn't sure what to say except his typical service default setting.
"Want me to heat that up for you?" He asked, tipping his head towards your plate of cold spring rolls.
Your looked around the empty restaurant to affirm no one overheard their exchange and leaned forward. "You're not supposed to use your powers outside of school.."
Warren mimicked you cadence and leaned forward too. "I was just going to stick it in the microwave."
Your shoulders dropped and you let out a light chuckle. Warren Peace possessed a sense humor?
"Oh..right. I was..supposed to be meeting Will here tonight but...he couldn't make it." Your eyes darting around as if one last scan of the empty restaurant would somehow make him appear. Couldn't make it or forgot. Warren thought. He saw the way your eyes shifted listlessly. He knew what you meant.
Warrens ability to hold conversation, and overall casual demeanor caught you off guard. Was this really the same guy that nearly charred the cafeteria?
Before you could think better of it, the words blurted out. "Want to sit down?"
No. He thought.
Yet when the words came out of his mouth, it sounded more like "I think I can spare a minute." He gave the empty restaurant a once over before sliding into the empty booth seat. He wasn't sure why he agreed. This girl was a walking icicle with a weird attachment to Stronghold. And perhaps that last part is why, he sort of felt sorry for her being stood up by him. He was no stranger to being wronged by a Stronghold, and He didn't have to be an empath to tell she was upset. She clearly liked him. Plus, it meant he didn't have to work.
You watched with a light flinch as Warren lit the candle at the table with the snap of his finger—a small orange flame hovering from his index finger. Fire wasn't your favorite element to say the least. However the gesture impressed you and rightly reminded you that this was indeed Warren Peace after all. His rebellion was almost an endearing staple of that fact. You gave a nervous grin, retreating your hands onto your lap.
Warren noticed your apprehensive reaction. Ah shit. Ice chick remember? She probably isn't a big fan of the whole fire thing. He gave a thin lipped grin. "Sorry. Forgot about the whole Ice thing." He muttered annoyed though more at himself than anything. But why should he care?
Was Warren peace apologizing to you? Were you in the twilight zone?
"It's fine. Actually I'd prefer it that way." You shrugged with a light smile as you fiddled with your fingers in your lap. This remark confused him. What, that you didn't want people to know about your ice powers?
What perhaps was even more confusing was the fact that Warren returned with his own smile back at her. A sort of low quirked corner of his mouth. His friendliness was jarring. This doesn't seem like the Warren from school. Warren from school was scary, and standoffish. This Warren was easy to talk to and listened attentively to your 20 minutes of rambling, with only one instance of zoning out. Perhaps, it was all hidden by the fact that no one had really taken the chance to actually get to know him. Although, his tough guy persona didn't exactly scream "talk to me!".
Listening to you ramble on about his arch enemy was nice and all, but the longer you talked, the sadder you seemed. He opted to steer the conversation away from stronghold related agendas.
"So..you've got ice powers." He shifted to the other elephant in the room, leaning forward onto his arms. His eyes couldn't help but acknowledge the mirage of blues and whites, and the cascade of icy blonde waves that fell around your face. He didn't know you, but it all seems so on brand for you. Even the light sparkling of your skin made sense. Not that he was looking at it though..
Your face didn't seem to brighten any more than it did talking about will. You averted your eyes to the window. "Yeah." You replied from a far away place. He suddenly felt bad for bringing it up.
"You sound super jazzed about it." He remarked with a sarcastic perplexity.
"I mean aside from being a traveling side show act, I suppose it's okay. Not sure it's something I would have willingly chosen." You quipped unenthusiastically.
Warren gave you a nod of mutual understanding. Being doomed to a pre determined set of circumstances beyond your control. Only ever being reduced to that and the narratives that came along with it.
"No choice. Lucky us." He huffed with a cruel reminder of his own.
You gave a thin lipped smile that in itself echoed "Lucky Us".
"But Will never really seemed to care about that kind of stuff y'know? He knows powers are just superficial anyways." You said circling back to Will. Warren had to stop himself from rolling his eyes. He had known Will longer and while perhaps that was true at one point, that belief system only seemed true when Will didn't have his powers. Now that he had them, he was starting to realize the benefits of that superficial system and the glory of it all when your power was likable.
"So was it the super strength or the punctuality that made you fall for him?" Warren narrowed his eyes.
Your practically burst into flames by yourself. "What?!" You let out a nervous guffaw. "I am NOT in love with Will-" but you paused at Warren, who raised his eyebrows at you. He could see through your weak performance.
You dropped your shoulders. Pink crept up on your cheeks. "Is it that obvious..?" You grimaced, realizing how transparent you had been droning on about will this whole time. If even Warren Peace could deduce that, how many others had also? Did will? God how mortifying.
You braced herself for his wrath of jokes, but he only continued his genuine inquisition. "So why don't you tell him?"
Good question.
"Well.....
-I was going to ask him to homecoming but...now that I think about it with more than two brain cells...I think he might ask Gwen Grayson. And she's the most beautiful girl at Sky High so..." you drifted in thought as if saying this out loud finally made something click. Of course. How could you be so blind in their interactions.
Warren studied your expression. He ruminated on the statement, before saying with a serious tone,
"To let true love remain unspoken, is the quickest route to a heavy heart."
You sat stunned for a moment. You couldn't help but be wildly impressed at his poetic fluency. Another thing about Warren Peace, that nobody knew.
"Wow...that is really deep." You breathed with awe.
"Yeah.."he quietly agreed. After a beat, he revealed the tiny paper in his hands. Adding "..and your lucky numbers are...Four...Thirty eight, Seventy two, and Twelve."
You let out a chuckle at your naivety. Suddenly, their conversation was interrupted the an older women yelling in Chinese from the kitchen. Warren yelled back in the same language, furthering his laundry list of hidden traits that you were becoming privy to.
"I gotta go." He said flatly, grabbing his water pitcher and sliding out from the booth. He threw his rag over his shoulder as gave what could almost be mistaken for another slight sort of smile. Awkward at best.
"Later, Icy."
As you watched him disappear into the kitchen, you couldn't help but smile as you twirled the fortune paper in your fingers. Glancing at your still dry phone, it was almost 10pm. You shoved the fortune into your bag and slid money onto the table with a generous tip to boot, before quietly slipping out the door.
For my own sanity I have to pretend I was on crack for the first couple chapters idk, I really think you'll like it though. Again, this is simply a hobby of mine so please do not hold your breath. Another thing I want to add is, I am a very visual person, so chapters for me play out like scenes in my head, so they are a bit short an broken up instead of long drawn chapters. It just sequences better for me.
Also note: regardless of readers ethnicity you will have white hair cause ice powers sorry I don't make the rules (I do.)
FINAL NOTE SORRY: Each chapter has a corresponding song! Be sure to check the notes of each one :)
Enjoy! ദ്ദി ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ )
★ Song: Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus
You set your tray down, sliding into the seat next to Will Stronghold. The lunch table was a dorky conglomerate of Sky-Highs best senior side-kicks, save for Will, who had just earned his newfound super strength in a battle with fellow senior, Warren Peace last week. The freshest dork of them all, was You, who had transferred in junior year. With a refreshed sense of do-goodism from his new super-hero status, Will had spotted the clueless underclassmen as soon as you arrived, the crew then taking you under their wing as their newest member.
"Hey yn!" Will greeted warmly. "Sup newb." Zach joked, slinging a loose arm over his girlfriend, Magentas, shoulder. "Zack!" Layla chided. Despite their jokes, you served them all a grateful smile, narrowing in on Will. "S'fine. Hey guys." You grinned.
"Looking forward to finally seeing your powers." Will enthused. Oh...right. Sky-High required new students to undergo the power presentation in gym class. You stared at your untouched plate. A pit of anxiety forming in your stomach. "Can't hide em forever, blondie—they track you down eventually." Zack remarked coolly. Layla nodded in agreement. "Unfortunately-Zack's right. Even I couldn't hide my powers for long." She gave a sympathetic shrug. Your nerves began to manifest by way of tiny frosted patterns overtaking your milk carton from your fingertips, until the entire thing is frozen solid. The table staring at it awkwardly with impress. Dammit, you cursed inside.
With your flowing white hair and usual ensemble of light blues and whites, it wasn't hard to assume your powers might be ice related. You might've been able to hide that fact had you tried harder, but that would have meant a whole new wardrobe and a whole lot of hair dye. You hadn't exactly planned on being a sore thumb in a new school this year, no thanks to your parents divorce, and ice related powers were already an attention grabbing rarity. But unfortunately your plan to fly under the radar was nearing its end.
Your anxious thoughts were interrupted. "—it's like you can feel him staring. It's creepy. Might as well set your hair on fire while he's at it." Magenta remarked. You looked around, trying to clue into what they were talking about. "How about we lay off on the fire jokes. Got enough of that last week." Will scoffed. You flipped your head around to follow everyone's gaze. A particularly dark and broody figure at a far table was shooting daggers at the back of wills head. In a brief assessment of the extra set of eyes next to will, Warrens searing glare flicks to yours for a moment, your eyes making hardly an acquaintance before returning to will. Warren scowled, eyeing the anonymous girl with the hair so bright it was obnoxious, seems like the geek squad had adopted the clueless new girl, he figured. Despite the exchanges short lifespan, the moment was enough to unsettle you."Well someone doesn't think you did.." Zack states.
"Is that the guy that tried to beat up Will last week?" You inquired curiously, still examining the disturbing scene. "More like tried to burn alive! That's Warren Peace. Son of the infamous Baron Battle, super psycho, total hothead, yada yada yada" Zack snorts. Will looks him defensively. "—and I won by the way. He's probably just peeved he can't burn anyone he wants to just because he's moody." He sneers. " and because he basically activated my powers." Lips curving into a satisfied smirk. You acknowledge with a nod.
"Speaking of which..." Will gifted his smirk to you. The bell rang out loudly across the lunchroom. Shit..you wanted to crawl under the table and disappear.
—
You stood awkwardly in a single file line with the other 4 new students. The rest of the students parked on the bleachers, plus some. Rumor had gotten out about a new student with ice powers and naturally, half the school had snuck into the gym to watch the presentation, to confirm for themselves. Packed in like sardines, even the teachers didn't pay mind that their students were skipping just to be here. The only thing anyone seemed to mind was the abnormal low temperature in the gym, as if someone had been wracking up the AC bill on purpose. Warren Peace had taken notice. Annoyed, he hiked up the collar of his leather jacket, preserving his self warming. He leaned his shoulder against the dark side of the bleachers. Fire powers or not, He wasn't particularly concerned with this ice ordeal, but it was an excuse to skip class.
Your heart slammed in your chest. It wasn't a lack of power that concerned you, more so the abundance...being propped up here like a circus animal. You managed your way to be last, avoiding the inevitable as long as possible until..
"Y/N Hailstorm.."
You cowered inwardly. Hoping you could somehow invert and disappear completely. But it wasn't so. Suddenly a hand planted on your shoulder. "You've got this." Will assured with a confident grin that made your heart flutter. "Thanks Will." You replied with a forced half smile.
Up on the platform, you approached Coach Boomer, he eyed your small stature curiously. "You...might want to stand back." You whispered lowly to him. He let out a laugh but when he realized you weren't joking, his smile faded. "Right." He noted, taking a few generous steps back, a hint of fear in his voice as he held his clipboard as a subtle shield.
"What did they say her power was again? Snow?" One student remarked in the bleachers near Warren. "I guess? Maybe she'll make a snowman for boomer." Another girl snickered. Boring. Warren rolled his eyes.
You took a shaky breath. Finally uncovering your hands which were usually tucked away, with sleeves blanketing up to your knuckles. There was a silence in the gym. Thick with anticipation. Everybody's eyes on you now. Every single one. You shut your eyes and tried to drown out the expectant silence.
Focus. They want a spectacle? Give them a spectacle.
A soft frost begins crawls up the walls. Tiny crystalline flakes of white, drifting lazily from the ceiling. The crowd in a hum of underwhelm.
"Build us a snowman!" A student jeered from the audience at the lackluster winter display.
The few garnered chuckles come to a halt however at the low metal drone as the air vents above suddenly creak and ache. The temperature in the room seems to plummet in an instant, catching everyone's breath. Warren, with his already sensitivity to the cold, almost coughs for air. Without another moment, intense flashes of icy blue lighting erupts from your fingertips. They zap outward in all directions in a magnificent storm of blue hues, The entire gym begins to quake as enormous, sharp, icicles stab out across the ceiling and floor, effectively tearing the wooden court to pieces. A thick white frost swallows the entire room, the walls, a threatening crystallized blanket.
The surge comes to a slow rumble as it subsides. Your eyes flutter open. Every pair of eyes were wide with shock.
The damage couldn't be complete without a large icicle detaching itself from the rafters and shattering onto the floor. You winced at it. Goddamnit. Happy now?
The entire room erupts in a wave of commotion. Part excitement, part fear. Warren takes note of the cheery reaction with an annoyed expression. But even he couldn't deny that it was indeed an impressive display of power. But seeing as it was ice power, his only concern now was that you two stayed out of each other's way.
—
The following day, you contemplated even entering the lunchroom. You were officially the latest freak show. Fresh meat for everyone's opinion, where they could quickly categorize you into some made up hierarchy, or create their own personal narratives.
It wasn't necessarily shame of your power, more so that this whole spectacle act was tired. Ever since the first moment in middle school when you first froze the girls bathroom into a complete igloo, it was all anyone talked about. Like some sort of alien freakshow. Not to mention the excess of researchers and scientists that had borderline stalked you to study your rare power. You had managed over the course of freshman to sophomore year to blend in at your old school, and had made a pretty good facade of flying under the radar there. But that all blew up the second you had to switch schools junior year after moving with your mom post divorce.
But all that noise melted away at the sight of Will beckoning you over to the lunch table. "YN, over here!" he called with a wave. His smile sent butterflies dancing through your stomach. It was true. You had all but become infatuated with Will Stronghold. He didn't have to be friends with you. And yet, he took grace on you. Made you feel like somebody cared beyond the frost. Doted on you. Even threw a few remarks her way that you could have sworn were flirtatious in nature. Man you hated attention but when it came from Will, well...
Your dizzying daydreams of Will came to a rude halt as you slowly edged your way through the lunchroom. You could already feel it. Everyone's eyes immediately latched onto you, a low hum of murmurs filling the already tense air. Your grip tightened on your tray as nervous minuscule ice tendrils snaked their way over your food.
Warren hardly glanced up from his book when he noticed the usual grating symphony of students had stopped intruding his ears. Only to see you making your way over to your table. It was hard to miss the visually abrasive white of your hair that flowed behind you. Again within his earshot, he could hear the muttering rumors and opinions.
"I heard she stabbed someone in the heart with one of her icicles and that's why she changed schools."
"Well I heard that she gave her teacher frostbite and he lost one of his thumbs."
Warren couldn't help but scrunch his face at the comments. Idiots always fueling the endless rumor mill at Sky High. It wasn't anything he himself was unfamiliar with.
"Well I heard she's Strongholds new pet. I bet she's eating all this up. She totally has a girl boner for him."
Warren rolled his eyes. The usual mindless, baseless jabber. The last part was probably true though. That ice chick followed Stronghold around like some pathetic lost puppy and will doesn't even seem to notice. Typical Stronghold airhead...
As you approached the table, even the table couldn't help from gawking at you. "Guys. Please don't be weird about this." You urged, shifting on your foot uncomfortably.
Zack and Magenta awkwardly averted their eyes, the paint of the walls suddenly becoming more interesting.
Layla flashing a tight-lipped smile before also investing in other matters. Will kept his attention though. "You were amazing, yn!" He assured. You couldn't help the pink that crept on your cheeks as you poked at your food. "Thanks Will. But...can we talk about something other than my powers?" You almost pleaded. Although you loved the adoration from Will, even he couldn't convince you to hold an entire conversation about yourself and your powers like that.
"Wanna talk about me? Let's talk about how I'm totally going to fail the Science test tomorrow. How am I supposed to know the purpose all 14 power cells in a radioactive spider? I've only just gotten here and I'm totally behind."you huffed.
Wills face perked up. "I actually didn't do too shabby on that sector. I could help you study if you want."
Another flush of pink across your face. Your chest thumped.
"Really? You'd do that? You don't have to!" You objected with little force.
"No, this stuff is a breeze. Tell you what, you, me, a mountain of textbooks, paper lantern—tonight at 7?" He smiled warmly.
Your heart may well have skipped a beat.
"I'll be there. Thanks Will." You grinned lowly, trying to hide the rollercoaster that just happened in your chest.
