We are highly aware, that Mafias are problematic for society and that most of the members aren't good people

Therefore we try our best to not romanticize any harmful actions, inappropriate language or characters. Murder, illegal trading, human trafficking, blackmailing, racism etc. are bad, even evil, and will in some way or another be depicted as that.
Just because it exists in our story, doesn't mean we support it. If it fits the main theme and can be correctly depicted, it's gonna be part of the story

That said, we still want to create likeable, interesting and relatable characters. Mafia members are still people with their individual personality, problems and quirks.
We're creating characters who have all that. Who can be one's comfort/favorite etc. characters, despite the fact that their part of a brutal and malevolent organization. Meaning some characters have a more soft and cute vibe about them. Some are hella nerdy, relaxed and/or stupid. Others are evil and uncanny, even for all the other characters.
We want a colorful cast - in every aspect possible.
The important detail to remember is: As long as it isn't stated otherwise, all characters are mostly comfortable and alright with every bad thing that's happening in the different Mafias
