Crazy and short theory.

Okay, I just came up with this theory, if you remember, at the beginning of the story Liu Kang decides to go back to time to Shang Tsung with Fujin and Nigthwolf, Raiden wants to accompany them, but Liu stops him since he needs his advice, so Raiden lets them go.

Well, my theory is that even though Raiden is no longer the protector of the earth, Liu Kang was able to offer him to be the guardian of time.

If we start analyzing, Raiden and Liu Kang were watching everything behind the hourglass until it was time to meddle in Shang Tsung's plans, but only Liu came back. So, if we go to the good ending where Liu Kang wins, we can see that he gets the crown, however, when meeting Kung Lao he no longer has the crown on, my conclusion is that while Liu becomes the new protector of the earth, Raiden on the other hand becomes the guardian of time.

Okay this is my little theory, it really is something that was going through my mind, but in the end NRS is who has the last word.
