The man before him was too well dressed for a random afternoon at a coffee shop. Or maybe he was just young and handsome and Victor in his comfort polo and chinos felt inadequate in the same room as someone without grays. He put a lot on the fact that he was one of the few men his age with a full head of hair, and then this bastard rolled in.
“My wife took the lattes and the latte money in the divorce. And yes, I wanted the validation of you trying it so that when I complain to the staff I have proof that someone else realized it too and not that because I’m pushing fifty my tastebuds are going. Haven’t you heard of a mob before? Jesus, you kids don’t want be joiners these days…”
"joiners? you kings of the world never produce anything worthy of joining." he leans back, now reassessing the stylish man with the dawning recognition of a compatible lunatic. "matter of fact, i’ll make you a wager. we drive to the best restaurant within fifty miles of this place right now, order whatever tragic little biscuit they’ve got on the menu, and if it’s actually better than this, we box up a dozen and mail them to the pastry chef here." it is nerve-wracking really, making new friends on the playground. lewellyn does hope he says yes.
" don't look now but that cutie at the other end of the bar is TOTALLY checking you out. " avery gave a wiggle of her brows, drink in hand as she gave a gentle nod of her head in their general direction, " what's the vibe? need me to be your bodyguard or wingman? i'm good for either. "
location : the barn
"well of course she is." lew’s face widens into a broad, indulgent smile as he leans forward, like an adult entertaining a child’s astonishing discovery about the colour of sky. this is extraordinarily sporting of her, what a woman. "would you like to play a thoroughly unhinged ex-girlfriend, then? make a scene, do go crazy, love, really sell it. say i've ruined you for all men." he tilts his head, just a bit. "this cheek pinks up better when slapped."
⸻ She slapped him on the shoulder jokingly when he repeated that ridiculous nickname that he always used to her. Part of her wanted to tell him that she had a crush on him, but alas, he was her ex-husband's business partner, or whatever Marcel was up to. And then she inhaled the smoke slowly, exhaling as if she was freeing all the stress she carried. ❛ You're not going to deny me this. ❜ She squinted her gaze at him when he said she couldn't know. Says the man who delivered the news that her husband, or ex, was dead.
❛ Fine… And I'm hungry; you better have something here for us to eat. ❜ She added, not being afraid of making an order. The whole day was based on coffee, running after her son, making her clients happy, and hearing the complaints and solving issues between a few of her workers. Part of her was considering disappearing with Joshua, her horse, into the wilderness for a bit to cool down the stress, and she always does it. Behind the sympathetic smile… Hides tiredness.
he gives a very demure lift of a shoulder she slapped, the pleased cat that he is. she is joking about denying, of course, and his features don't change a fraction, but their minds must go to the same night. he'd spent hours trying to trace it back to the deal they were working on with marcel, was it connected, yet couldn't. couldn't get it out of his head, either. lewellyn is no stranger to this kind of death, men in his line of work risking everything daily despite having a perfectly good family waiting at home. if you think about it really, lew's rather noble in his inability to settle down.
"have at it, then," he smiles all the same, surrendering the vessel and preparing for the lecture that's coming. "the cook appears to have deserted his post. surely the pantry contains something edible. failing that, smokey’s delivers?" brows furrow. uninspiring options, admittedly, but not beyond hope. the slight tiredness behind her eyes does not go unnoticed, as he flings the main doors open for them. "love, you ever consider eating before you are starving?"
for: @hndsights at: the right tune
by every reasonable measure, the search has escaped containment. lewellyn occupies a large section of the floor, cross-legged amid open crates and a steadily expanding constellation of vinyl sleeves. he looks up.
"i hate to point out the obvious, love, but alphabetizing the pussycat dolls tells me absolutely nothing about the order in which all this happened. it's really a rather cruel sorting decision."

now there's a delayed response. and once upon a time they called gunner slow. defensively, he crosses his arms over his chest, after discarding the cigarette into his pocket with much disdain. "I didn't touch you." but okay, he'll bite on this one. "an' there's fixin' to be one less one, if y'don't curb that entitled rich shit attitude." off-brand for him, but he's not in the circuit anymore. he doesn't have sponsers watching his every move, every word that comes from him. and maybe despite acquiring his own funds himself to the point where he's at today, he doesn't think he'll ever act so ignorantly.
lew’s head tips back a fraction, eyes narrowing in disgusted affront. "i have not started being an entitled rich shit at you." where's he get off acting like lew is insufferable when he's being perfectly reasonable and considerate? and what's worse — how is this shit now his afternoon? entrepreneurship, you vile mistress. he takes a step closer. "what, you gonna murder me, horseman?"
Who: Lew ( @cantilevxr ) Where: Ski Lodge
With his hands shoved into the pockets of his pants, James made his way into the Ski Lodge. A rather shit eating grin already resting on his face as he looked around for a moment, taking a few seconds before his eyes landed on Lew. The friendship had been almost unexpected but very much welcomed. Someone that even after only knowing for a short period of time, James felt like he could be his goofy side, could let loose a little bit. Like he didn't have to hold himself to this standard he felt like everyone else did. That he didn't have to be who his friends and family thought he used to be. That with Lew, he could simply be the James that he was now. The one who forgot shit but still had that small bit of smart ass side to him, that yearned to goof around and just laugh.
"Ah, there he is. The town's ray of sunshine." He laughed in greeting, shaking his head as he made his way over to Lew. "Hard at work as always I see." The corners of his eyes crinkling with amusement.
lew's sprawled on top of a receptionist counter, thankfully just large enough and with a good view to the part of the high ceilings that spots a bit of a window. it is so boring sometimes. he stops playing with a hotel plaque that he's been throwing and catching.
"see, that cannot offend me," lew turns with a grin, weight resting on his left elbow now, entirely too pleased to see james. even rapunzel perhaps was not as happy to be freed from her wretched solitude in that castle. he's not sure how it happened; james just appeared somewhere in town someday and it was impossible not to befriend him. such people are rare. he should know. "because there was neither intention nor promise of work to begin with. now, do you want to get coffee?"
respectfully. starting off a sentence with respectfully usually means something disrespectful is going to come out of their lips with the excuse of well i said respectfully. also not a lie though. the way the horse responded, if you've never seen an animal in distress especially a horse. and judging by the cigarette he so carelessly smokes near the stalls, he probably has never been this close. hand remains on the horses neck and he looks to him a moment, "not an it, a she." exhales, and here's the part where his southern hospitality just fucks off somewhere in the corner. "and respectfully," leaning over to snatch the cigarette from the mans fingers, before putting it out at the bottom of his boot. now he's all for marlboro, but... "she's overstimulated and that shit wasn't helping." gunner exhales, "they're extremely sensitive to this, more than us."
brows knit together at the vague feeling of having done something wrong, but it's not, like, a big feeling. it's there somewhere. this entire estate had just nearly been wiped out by one animal, but fine, the horse can be a she.
it's the smoking thing that does snag him, and he supposes he does deserve to be read for filth for some things. but before he can do much, the cigarette's being nicked from his fingers. lew blows a bit of air to dispel the last remnants of smoke, stepping back, and at last remembers to be appalled at the invasion of personal space. "keep your hands to yourself, yes? humans are living creatures too and whatnot?"
⸻ And her mother decided to pop up at her place, out of the blue, simply because she can't resist seeing her grandson. Rémy was early with her at the Tangle Vine, helping "mama", and when she got home, her mother was there to spoil him. Annabelle, her Aussie mother, asked to let Rémy stay a night over with her, and it'd mean she could've a night free… Or at least for a few hours; knowing well her son, he'd cry and ask for her at some point. This is when she took advantage to cross the other side of the neighborhood, driving to see Lew. She re-touched her gloss on her rosy lips and fixed her silky blonde hair before getting into his place.
She skillfully grabbed his pack of cigarettes in the air; with a quick reflex, she got it and approached him. The boy she once loved when they were kids. ❛ I'll show you what bramble is… ❜ She grumbled that stupid nickname he keeps calling her, picking a cigarette to light it up with class. Briar doesn't smoke often; after having Rémy, she stopped. Only once in a while now, when she feels like being a bit of a rebel, although she likes to come to this place to smoke. ❛ I know… Mama is free tonight. ❜ She winks at him playfully. ❛ But I don't know until when… What are you drinking?! ❜
"yes, please show me what a bramble is," it is a safe flirting taunt as he follows her, because surely there isn't a universe in which she gives two shits about his handsome face with everything she's got going on. some days he just wants to help, truly; but mostly he's happy her bozo husband kicked rocks so they can hang out.
he covets the thermos a few inches away from her, half-coy. "you can't know, i'm afraid." whatever old wine he had found in the cellar collection was absolutely not made to be drunk out of a $5 dollar metal yard sale vessel. "unless you promise to not judge me or murder me or stop loving me.
location: Pour Decisions
"You. You, come over here a second." Victor beckoned. He needed to work on his people skills, that was true, but he also needed a second opinion. "No, just, leave that, sit here, and try that. Go on. Seriously. It's stale, right?" He scoffed as he slide the small white plate of biscotti towards the stranger. "And it's not the kind of stale where it's been sitting in a display for a few hours, that's gotta be days old, right? I mean it taste like they went to a supermarket and bought it in bulk and now they just leave it there. Is this really what we've come to? I might as well gone to Starbucks."
it's entirely an unweighed decision to respond to the context-devoid beckoning by sliding into the seat, eyes focus on the biscotti in the man's hand; it's a miracle lewellyn did not get kidnapped as a child.
"did you seriously—" a biscotti is crumbly and sorrowfully unimpressive as he takes it into his hand, giving it a tentative sniff. best he can do. "you wanted me to try a stale pastry? that's a latte you owe me for that."

where: mini-stables @ silver peaks ski lodge who: @gunnercolt
lew's entirely embarrassed to admit he hasn't seen a horse up close in real life outside of maybe a hippodrome, and even then there had been several railings, a great deal of champagne, and no expectation that it might look directly at him. leave it to him, of course, to buy a lodge with a mini-stable. "respectfully, mate, that's just freaky." he stands at a safe distance from mr. colt and his horse-whispering ways, a cigarette in his hand. the animal that all but trashed one of the stalls and sent two employees fleeing for higher ground has gone soft-eyed and docile beneath gunner’s hand. "how's it done that?"
where: outside of ski lodge for: @briarrosew
lew's nursing a serving of wine in a thermos like an absolute heathen mostly because nobody's here to say much to him about it, are they? he's standing out in the driveway of the ski lodge, sun setting nice and picturesque over horizon. briar pulls up through half a city for what's surely a secret smoke on a veranda, he knows in advance by now. a pack of cigarette flies through the air in her direction. "bramble," the affectionate nickname slips out as the easiest habit. "you know what's mine is yours, but this is not at all time efficient for you."
setting: buried deep in the bear creek park, with open (0/3).
perspiration sticks to her temple and the back of her neck as she finally stops moving. stillness is not something unfamiliar, though it is unwanted at this moment – though it is necessary. she has been walking up the mountain for hours now, and the least she needs is to take a sip of water. footsteps disturb them from admiring the horizon ahead of them, and they turn their head to glance at the one that approaches. "seems we both found the secret spot." they are not one to share, but the park is public, isn't it? her tongue itches to ask if they'd been following her into the wilderness, but a voice that sounds awfully like jasmine's whispers in her ear to be freaking nice. so she is freaking nice. "i have a spare water bottle if you need it."
be a conscientious business owner they said; peruse the grounds they said; lewellyn's choking up his lungs at the edge of a mountain, wondering why he is, maybe, not sleeping right now, buried in silk and friendly lavishing sunlight? a sports uniform that was surely a great self-conceited flex at an equinox is now betraying him in the wilderness, clinging to skin and trying to murder him and all that.
"don't i just, love," he stretches out a hand for it, an unlit cigarette between two fingers, but rest assured he'll light it as soon as the pine trees stop spinning. a glance, as he takes in the sight of his company. "why are you here?" just why possibly.
look who goes there! is that LEWELLYN 'LEW' FISH? i’ve seen him often around EVERGREEN, which may be because he is an OWNER @ THE SILVER PEAK SKI LODGE. he's been in town for ONE MONTH SINCE MOVING AWAY and i’ve known him to be ADAPTABLE but also DRAMATIC. for some reason, MODEL, ACTRESS, WHATEVER by SUKI WATERHOUSE reminds me of him, as well as EXPENSIVE TAILORED COATS AND EXQUISITE FOOD, KEEPING TOO MANY SECRETS & MISSING A HOME YOU NEVER HAD, SCREAMING INTO THE AIR NEAR A BROKEN DOWN CAR ON A HIGHWAY.
"Money?" she chuckled with underlying contempt. "Still an asshole who thinks he's got it all figured out, huh?" Her therapist warned her that her return could come with apprehension. Fair. She left them once; who was to say she wouldn't do it again? Kit had been challenged not to go on the defensive, but not answering to anyone for seven years, but herself, made this far more difficult than she anticipated.
"Our sister requested I return, so I obliged." There was no timeline on purpose. She took a contract and could stay for the duration, then leave if nothing changed, or had the option of extending if things played out in her favor. Life was short, as this memorial was amplifying to everyone in this godforsaken town. No one was free from the reality of death. Kit didn't want to be bitter or resent her brother if something happened to him. Honestly, she couldn't live with herself if it did, and they never had any form of reconciliation. This was her olive branch. Her presence here and now. "Look, I'm not trying to cause any disruption to your world, I'm just here to figure a few things out. I didn't think it warranted your permission."
"Yes, I am the worst man to ever exist," Richard doesn't really allow himself an eye roll. He is not quite that far outside the bounds of his self-control. She likely hears it in his voice, regardless. "You can rest easy in the knowledge that hasn’t changed."
He is vaguely aware that the more her words press against the old hurt of missing her, the less pleasant he is becoming. What things? He had once wasted considerable time wanting to ask her questions and receive something other than a brick wall in return. Seven years had made the exercise seem increasingly pointless.
Richard draws in the mountain air, the smallest gesture of his right hand meaning: fine. This has no point. He will be civil until she leaves again.
"Did not mention you needing my permission. Do what you must, let me know if you need help," his voice is entirely procedural. He gives the faintest possible shrug and looks at her, careful not to linger over the changes seven years have made, or wonder too closely about the life that put them there.

⸻ ❛ I never thought of it. ❜She refers to him as a feminist. Anne followed where Richard was guiding her. Her steps were unhurried, her heels clacking against the pavement with every stride. Either way, she decided to put an end to her complaint about her roommate. He does not need to be a topic for the next few hours when she is at home. The small glow illuminated the dark Maine evening for a split second before she inhaled deeply. Within minutes, the heavy, sweet smoke began to do its work. The sharp edge of her irritation began to blur, melting into a slow, hazy numbness that made the biting winter air feel suddenly distant, as if the cold could no longer quite reach her.
❛ Good. ❜ She retorted. The Dutchwoman was colorblind, but this is a detail he doesn't need to know. Due to the type of her colorblindness, driving at night was better than driving during the day. ❛ What are you doing?! ❜ Anne commented, and she movement of her index finger to the tip of her nose. ❛ Are you good, bro?! ❜ She inquired with curiosity, now looking into his eyes, with her mesmerizing gaze, sparkling grey-bluish hues met his blue eyes. And then she halts briefly, and removes her high heels, and carries it with a hand, walking barefoot, since these heels were killing her.
Funny to think of it, when she used to wear those uncomfortable ice skates, which destroyed a foot of everything, especially when she used to spend a ridiculous amount of hours on top of that thingy, training, dancing, and competing. A piece of her that is now dead. Perhaps, she might consider using that Arm&Hammer on her feet later; undoubtedly, it will be very dirty. Albeit, now she needed relief.
Her finger reaches her nose cleanly enough, in his highly inebriated estimation, though it is not quite as forensic a coordination test as the situation requires ideally. It will still do.
"I'm good," Richard’s brows draw together at her confusion, eyes narrowing as he assesses her, and he gives a pointed but equally curious look. "Are you?" It all seems, somehow, vaguely hilarious. Inevitably, his mind circles back to food still. A plate of something hot sounds offensively good right now. He can't quite put a finger on the craving, but it is there.. Richard's fingers find the pleasant weight of the leather-bound key fob in the inside pocket of his coat. Obviously, it was always going to end like this.
"Okay. You know a decent restaurant in this place?" Despite having lived here the entirety of his life, dining anywhere near the Bluffs is an experience he has so far been spared. He can remember an old article about a highly-rated little establishment tucked away nearby, surely he could find it once they're on the road... He rounds the car and tosses the keys to Anne. "Think fast."
⸻ A perfect and manicured brow rose when he retorted to her words… The "but"s, and she was thankful he didn't want her services. Either way, Anne did not come here to do a freelancing thing. As a newcomer to town, she came from networking. The blonde was rather relieved that this was a familiar face in a foreign city. The only thing she brought with her was her clothing, and somehow, her roommate was Vikrom. ❛ Ouch! I'm hurt! You don't find me pretty! ❜ She says sardonically.
The Dutchwoman feels rather comfortable around him and safe. All she did in her entire life was trust in her instincts. And then back on the issue… ❛ Yes, detergent. He was upset that he bought a family-sized edition, and I used it to clean that dirty floor. The entire floor. ❜ In her point of view, Vik should be content to arrive at his place smelling like roses. And she had a lot of work to do, moving furniture, to clean every single space of it.
❛ Well, if you say this product is good, then I shall believe. ❜ She made a mental note to get in the groceries the next day and get Arm&Hammer, maybe four of them, and he will stop bitch. And sure, she won't buy methomyl, as annoying as Vikrom may be, he's a nice person, in his awkward way. Her lips quirking around the filter before she plucks the joint from between his fingers. She takes another slow drag, noticeably longer this time. The tension that usually kept her shoulders squared has started melting into something softer, almost boneless. ❛ I don't hate him. Otherwise, I'd sleep on the street's floors. He's just a 133434 grandpa, in a young vessel, that's it. ❜
"Perhaps I value substance over appearance." It's about as reassuring as a brick wall, but Richard walks in step with her towards the hills, the cadence of his speech entirely, indecently unserious. "Perhaps I'm a feminist, Anne. Has that occurred to you?"
He's unconcerned with accidentally offending her looks the same way everyone around him should really not be concerned with offending his finances; no insult could ever be great enough to move reality by an inch. The sun is a glowing red dot over the water so far away, and Richard breathes in chilly mountain air, the unusually intense feel of it, Anne's words about her roommate and floors somewhere in the periphery as he takes several deep, consecutive drags... It's not that he's not paying attention. Anne is, as a matter of fact, much more entertaining and peculiar a conversationalist than most people he'd encountered at this event. He is suddenly just... able to not. His whole body feels heavier, luxuriously so, and his thoughts arrive so politely, merely one by one...
"Good," he does not care whether Vikrant’s floors survive, but the ease with which Anne accepts his recommendation produces a small, private satisfaction. A grandpa joke that then follows is not that amusing. Richard feels the corner of his mouth climbing up anyway, an amused breath escaping; he sees Anne clocking it, too, but does not feel the need to perform so much grave seriousness in present company. As they veer out of the tree-lined path to the asphalt, the sight of his car around the corner makes a very compelling case for leaving this awful function. He'd offered enough pleasantries and ate enough irritated commentary to leave with a clean conscience. Speaking of eating.
"How is your driving?" he's asking suddenly, eyes intently trained now on Anne to assess what he can of her state. She's much slower a smoker, clearly more used to it than Richard's uninterrupted cigarette-like pace. It would be better for her to drive. Perhaps there's an argument to be made for the state of his Aston Martin, that he should not trust anyone else with it, but it's laughable; a piece of metal could not be worth more than his life. And Anne's, that is. Richard looks around a little, the lull of the evening around them, then back to Anne. No, there is decidedly no defensible reason they are not eating right now. "Look at me. Index finger to the tip of your nose."
