-You fed the fish. You always fed the fish. But are you sure? They look at you, so pleadingly, so hungry. You must not have fed the fish. -you clean the filter. You clean the filter every week. The one time you did not, the filter media groaned and squelched as if in pain. -The plants are not growing. You strengthen the lights. The plants wither. You lower the lights. The plants, still, are not growing. You test the co2, the iron content. But still, they do not grow. Suddenly, you have duck weed and Java moss everywhere. -One day you find a single fry lurking behind a piece of drift wood. It does not look like any fish you have. It does not look like any fish you have ever had. You do not know where it came from. You never see it again. -You turn over every rock, every leaf, every decoration in your tank. You do not find a single living shrimp, just a few discarded exoskeletons. But as soon as you put in shrimp food, they are innumerable. -Where did that can of fish food come from? How old is it? Why does the ingredients list seem to be subtly shifting every time you look at it? -The fish store clerks look at you with their dull, fish-like eyes. They blink asynchronously. You ask for help, but they are cleaning a tank. Algae has suddenly appeared. They scrub at it. You go to another clerk, but they must finish vacuuming the gravel. You go in endless circles, trying to find a clerk that does not need to clean. -No matter what you do, which store you go to, whether or not you call ahead, the fish store is always just out of RO. -A customer points at a fish in a crowded tank. “I want that one!” They exclaim. The dead-eyed clerk deftly catches the fish the customer pointed at. “Oh, wait, no, I wanted that one!” The process repeats until it begins again.
