Shades of Black & White [Pokemon Au]
"Well, Hylli, I think you’ve gotten us well and truly lost."Â
"Sni!"Â
The pair of voices belonged to a tall man in black and green and an oddly colored Snivy, and they presently stood in the center of a very thick forest. He had a map out, holding it in one hand, and a compass in the other. The needle was pointing him north, but the path fell away well before then. He pivoted on the spot and tried to point himself in the right direction.
The Snivy—Hylli, apparently— stood on the ground glancing up at the trees and the forest around her with red-brown eyes. Her tail twitched in thought, and she glanced back at the man, frowning and pointing west.
"Sni!"
"Yes, I am aware, thank you." Although he could not directly understand his pokemon, it was easy to understand what she meant—- the sun was setting and they were losing the light. They had to breach the forest before nightfall or risk spending the night in uncharted territory. Sighing and folding up his map and sliding the compass around his neck like a pendant, he lowered his arm for her to run up it and perch on his shoulder.
"We’ll make due. If we have to, we’ll press through the foliage." He mused, and she chirruped affirmatively, holding on to the high collar of his jacket. He began west, towards the fading light, and followed the small trail— likely blazed by Sawsbuck and Deerling— as far as he could before he had to begin pushing through the bushes and thick branches of the trees.
In the process he scared up a few bug pokemon and an angry few Pidove, but they flew and crawled away as he passed with small murmured apologies.
At last, his efforts found him the main road, and the edge of the forest just in time. The sun was dipping low beyond the distant hills, painting the sky with fiery colors and deep purples. Somewhere overhead, a Fearow cawed as it made its way back towards its nest for the evening.
"See? I told you it would work." He glanced sideways at his Snivy, who stared at him and plucked a twig from his hair, tossing it off to the side without breaking eye contact. She said nothing.
"Oh come off it. We didn’t get hurt." He gestured before him, "And look. I even found us a Pokemon Center to stay in for the evening."
Along the road, before it forked off to wind in separate directions, was a lone Pokemon Center, and he made towards it briskly.
It was dusk by the time he entered, earning the attention of the nurse.
"Oh! Welcome!" She chimed pleasantly from behind the desk, followed by the resident Audino.
"Good evening. Is there… somewhere open for me to stay tonight? Hylli and I are very tired." He gestured at his Snivy, who made an exaggerated sigh and slumped on his shoulder. The nurse giggled at him.
"Yes, I can see that from the leaves in your hair. We do have a room with four beds, since we don’t get much traffic out here… If no one else comes along, you’ll have the place to yourself!"Â
"Audino! No!" Chimed in her helper. The trainer attempted to subtly pluck the leaves from his hair, his cheeks darkening.
"Ah… thank you." He murmured. Hylli snickered on his shoulder, and he shrugged it to make her stop. Her retaliation was to climb on top of his head. Nurse Joy giggled.
"Make yourselves at home. What name should I put down on the books?"
"Loki. Thank you." He carefully dipped his head in thanks before shifting the weight of his knapsack over his other shoulder— the one Hylli stayed off of— and headed back for the rooms to decompress for a bit before pursuing food.
There was nothing that would get her to stray from the path through the woods. She was no fool and was wary enough of dark spaces without the added terror of trees.
Despite the fact that she was not alone, she was still a bundle of nerves all the same and was only thankful that the path was relatively short. The red-faced Absol beside her nudged her hand reassuringly, as if sensing her tension, making a gentle, high sound in her throat at the same time.
"I know...I know, I'm okay, I swear." The girl replied, lifting the previously nudged hand to pet the curl of hair beside the pokemon's face. "Let's just hurry...okay?" She added a little more nervously than she or the curiously frowning Absol would have liked. "Reinfall...don't worry! Really!"
Huffing, Reinfall the Absol walked a little faster, gesturing with her head almost impatiently for the girl to follow her. Good naturedly rolling her eyes, she followed quickly behind.
Her pace was good and strong for a short period of time, before she felt her attention turning from the road she walked on and the pokemon before her, to a small clearing in the trees, directly off the path they were on. A flash of pale wood and reddish leaves dipped in then out of the clearing and a chill shot through her and she froze.
It wasn't until she received a sharp, but small bite to her hand that she snapped out of her trance like state and looked to the source of the bite.
Reinfall looked unamused, but more concerned than angry at her. "Sorry...come on, it was nothing." She insisted before going back to the path.
Just before sunset, she and the Absol arrived at the doors of a Pokemon Center. She felt disheartened, having hoped to come across a town at least, but this was better than nothing.
Reinfall nosed the doors open and the girl caught the door before it swung closed, stepping inside herself. Nurse Joy smiled at the newcomers sweetly.
"My aren't we busy tonight!" She chuckled, clapping her hands together as the Audino beside her lifted a paw to wave at the girl and her Absol. "Do any of your pokemon need healing?" She inquired, to which the girl shook her head. "No no, we're all fine, just need a place to rest for the night. I'd hoped to reach a town before nightfall but that's alright." She replied with a small smile.
"Oh of course of course! We have room for the both of you, a gentleman and his pokemon are there now as well, it is an open room with more than enough beds to go around. Make yourselves at home!" Nurse Joy spoke, nodding her head in the direction of the room she spoke of. "Oh! May I have your name?"
"Of course, it's Samantha. Thank you Nurse Joy." Samantha bowed her head a little before being lead to the room by Reinfall.
Of course Reinfall was the first in the room. Sam was not exactly keen on strangers and was more than glad to let Reinfall go before her. At the very least, she offered the man and his peculiar Snivy a smile, before heading to the a bed situated as far from a window (and from him) as human possible. Sitting on the bed, Reinfall clambered up on it and nudged Sam's shoulder with her head, before nosing at Samantha's backpack.
"Hold your horses, Miss Thing." She spoke, nose booping Reinfall, before getting out the package of food the Absol wanted so badly. "Not too many...these are poketreats, not actual food. You'll get fat." To which Reinfall made a derisive noise at her and took the offered treats.

"Oh believe me, I will…" He purred sidelong at her. He was trying to get a rise out of her, playing around with her, and it was apparent by his little chuckle that followed. He swiped a clipboard offered to him by a passing underling and glanced over it.
"Ah! Excellent. We’ve rounded up what we can in the city as well. We’ll have a touch of a surplus, I think." Loki looked very pleased. He even let loose a bit of a hum.
That purr sent a river of chills over her skin and she fought to hide the shiver that moved through her. But she played it off, or so she thought, well enough.Â
Though when he spoke of a surplus, she perked up. "Really? Oh that's a relief, we can store those for more urgent emergencies! I mean...if you think that's what you should do...I mean..yes."
Okay so...it's late! Sue me! <3
"I did promise to protect you from all that sought to harm you, did I not?" He replies, looping his arms around her and swaying on his feet gently, like a dance, slow and soft, but neither moves very far.
"Feel safe, for I intend to hold to that promise for as long as I draw breath. And even beyond, if I am able."
"You did....I always feel safe with you Loki...always. I've never not felt safe in your presence..Your strength and your love gives me faith...gives me more strength than I ever thought possible.." Samantha lays her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes as they move back and forth in the same spot.
Although his thoughts lingered on worry, he pushed them away. Samantha was right. There was no use in worrying about it. She was back. He should be happy,
And he was.
"Mmn… come now, I think we ought to both partake of the bath house."
"I cannot agree with that more. I don't want to stink of death any longer than I have to." She shuddered and moved back a little, taking a hold of his hand.Â
"Shall we?"

Loki listened to her, listening carefully. She had a point, he supposed, but the fear still lingered in the back of his mind. She could be wrong. That thing could want revenge on him too.Â
"Mmn…" He sighed and nuzzled into the curve of her neck, "That’s a relief. I think I’ve had enough of him for the next five thousand years or so. I think we both have." He closed his eyes, mulling the information over for a moment.
"Severed…. Good."
"Yes we have. Good riddance to bad trash, mm?" She murmured into his hair, breathing a sigh of relief. "Let's not talk about..him anymore. As far as I am concerned and as far as I know, he is no longer an issue. Let's be happy and content with that, mm?" She added, looking down at him.

Warmth blooms along his cheeks, and he closes his eyes to relish in her touch and her words, humming in pleasure.Â
"My love, I could not agree more…The intimacy is just as wonderful as the time spent with you like this." He leans in and touches his nose to hers, laughing a soft, breathy chuckle.
A self-satisfied chuckle leaves her and runs the ball of her thumb along his cheek. Gently she rubs her nose against his and moves closer to him, to wrap an arm around him. "Sometimes...it's even better. You make me feel safe, safer than I have ever felt..."

{AU} The New Golden Age
Was she blushing already? Just at that? He chuckled and continued on his way, lingering in his pace so that she was at his shoulder. He sent her a sly little wink and a grin.
"That is the plan. It is a philosophy I have often benefited from. Expect the worst, and you will be prepared. If the worst does not happen, you are left pleasantly surprised." He folded his arms behind his back and sighed softly.
"I was not expecting to be met with any sort of success like this… or aid. Thank you."
Sam easily caught that grin and she dropped her eyes and allowed herself to smile and let slip a small laugh. "A good philosophy.." She allowed, nodding her head, as she follows alongside him, clasping her hands behind her as they continue down the hall.
"You are more than welcome, it was my pleasure. If I can ever be of more assistance, please, don't hesitate to ask."
"There. There’s at least some good that came of this, hhmmm?" Hey, he was trying to look on the bright side of things. Just having her there for a few minutes was reversing everything that had gripped him.
That was a mercifully short trial.
However.
He frowned.
"… What happens if we go back home and…. he’s there. Waiting for us. Or for me, specifically, since he likely thinks you dead."
She couldn't help but nod, giving him a light hint of a smile, something that she couldn't help, he gave her every reason to smile, even in spite of recent events.
"He...will not be. He has a very specific way that he works. You are someone he has brushed against, nothing more. He was attached to you through me, if he was attached at all and since that attachment has been severed...." She trailed off, watching him intently for a moment, for him to understand her meaning.
