Alan Blunt you massive dick
alex rider unpopular opinions?
I have a few of these, let's go, if you disagree please don't attack me, these are my opinions
Yassen is not a good person, and personally, I feel like the fandoms foegets/defends almost all of his actions. Yes he has a tragic backstory that sets up his story and shows us why he is who he is, but at the same time, within less than a year he worked for someone trying to kill millions of children and for someone who wanted to kill again, millions. He had messed up morals and at the end of the day, he was an assassin and a fucking good one.
(Just want to say, I like yassen as a character, but he is not a good person)
Yassens, "I don't kill children" thing is bs. Like I said before, Yassen was crucial to Sayles' plan, which was to kill a shit ton of children. He just didn't want to kill Alex.
Sabina deserved so much better writing than what she did in the books. It was better in the show. Imo, I'm the books she never rly felt like her own character. Everything to do with her was to do with alex
(Book) Mrs Jones is as bad as Blunt and imo her saying to Alex that she was always against using him, her manipulating him into trusting her more than blunt.
Ian was not a suitable guardian for Alex, he spent long periods of time away, leaving alex with Nanny's and I honestly don't know if Ian was training him his life like blunt implies but I just think Ian was not a good guardian
Otto Farrant As Alex Rider Alex Rider – S03E08 – Invisible Sword
i think a lot about john and ian and their strange, implicit estrangement. it is never explicitly addressed but it is there. blunt going out of his way to say that ian was a good agent but john was a better one. alex always being compared to john despite ian being the man who raised him. ian never telling alex anything about his parents. john never sparing a thought for ian in the snakehead coda. ash being chosen to be the best man at john's wedding and alex's godfather instead of ian. ian being recruited to mi6 straight out of university while john went military and none of it mattering in the end because it was still john who was chosen for the scorpia mission, john who died the hero, john who got blown up and martyred while ian's own death barely registered. you're twentysomething years old and your older brother has just been murdered after being better than you at the one thing you are defined by and you will spend fourteen years raising his son, and none of it will matter. here's a question: why does ian hate being called 'uncle' so much? here's another: can you still be an uncle without a brother?

I swear to god I’ve seen it all
i think Horowitz does a good job of making the reader forget that the main character is a child and would normally never be capable of spy activities, but I also think he does a good job of sprinkling in Alex's youth, like when he's undercover as a ball boy in Wimbledon and he witnesses a guard acting very suspiciously but forgets about it entirely because the tennis games are so entertaining
like, it makes sense. this is a teen at a global sporting event, it makes sense that it would distract Alex. and then you remember he shouldn't be working for MI6 at all. packs a nice punch in my opinion
i think it's fun that Alex Rider was canonically in the same room as Venus Williams. i hope he got her autograph before the rest of the horrors happened
Alex and Mrs. Jones at Ian's funeral.
also it's really fucked up at a teacher at Brookland saw Alex talking to a strange man and walked away.
...the whole school knew that there was something odd about him. [...] Mr. Wiseman decided to ignore the situation. Alex could look after himself and he would doubtless turn up later. He hoped. (pg. 26)
honestly it is no wonder MI6 has been able to take advantage of Alex twice already, considering how every adult in Alex's life continues to fail him :[

something i find occasionally frustrating in the show is that they really downplay MI6's cruelty. in Stormbreaker, Blunt makes it very clear he doesn't care whether Alex lives or dies as long as his goals are met. in Skeleton Key, Crawley approaches Alex at an after-school football game to recruit him as undercover security- something which is less conspicuous but honestly more appalling considering Crawley brought his dog along so that any adults would assume Alex is just talking to some guy about his dog, and worse, Crawley did this because he's going to ask a child to do an adult's job.
to be clear, i love the show versions of Crawley, Smithers, etc., especially because the books get pretty bleak at times, without any support for Alex. but i do think it's important to note the difference. Blunt isn't the only one directly responsible for turning Alex into a child soldier!
alright i've started rereading Skeleton Key. first thing that caught my eye:
Crawley was an office manager in one of the country's most secret offices. He did the paperwork, made the arrangements, set up the meetings. When someone died with a knife in his back or a bullet in his chest, it would be Crawley who had signed on the bottom line. (pg. 19)
i thought it was a nice nugget of info. i suppose it implies that Blunt is the one giving the orders, while Crawley is the one typically executing the logistics. i always like to know more about the chain of command & general job descriptions, and it makes writing fanfic easier
