𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘 𝐈𝐍: small town horrors, the sensitive kid, seeking acceptance in the wrong people, the runaway, you feel too deeply or not at all, an insatiable hunger, your home is your first grave, safety in indifference, a wolf in sheep's clothing, strange rebirth, & a descendant of cain.

the eden town sign has been vandalized since the late 1950s or 1960s, but no one has bothered to remove it, and as a result, it has become an unspoken part of the sign. when you come into the town, it reads: WELCOME TO EDEN — ESTABLISHED 1809. POPULATION 11,564. GOD FEARS NOTHING HERE. the "god fears nothing here." is the vandalism, but no one really sees a reason to remove it except for reverend samuels, but eventually even he accepted it.

he had spent most of his life in ruined temples, wet forests, & underground crypts where candlelight trembled against stone. this palace was too bright & clean, perhaps even too honest for someone like him, who squinted against the natural light & became uneasy the moment he stepped inside. he has no business there, except that he has long since devoted himself to her with an oath only he knew, but being in her presence was far different than following her from the shadows.

in the open room, he felt exposed even as he stood at the far end of it with his cloak still damp from the rain & mud crusted along the hem. his hood was pulled low, acting as a shield against the sunlight, & concealment of a harsh red wound that stained his pale cheek. he felt as if her eyes were the weight of judgment upon him, which forced his gaze low to the ground until she spoke to him. her words were heard, but deeply muffled against the rushing in his ears as his heart rate rose with each passing moment.

hesitation traps him in place before trembling hands reach up to lower the hood. as he did, his head also dipped lower instinctively. he hates how he feels bare here, no shadows to disappear into, no ruins to blend with, just polished stone & eyes on him.

“ nu– no. ” he said quietly. he swallows the lump from the back of his throat as he finds courage for his next words. “ th– there is n-n- no need. ” his voice came rougher now, despite the stutter.
