Hereās a long over-due update: I got an amazing job a few months ago. Since February, Iāve been an associate producer in an indie game studio. Ah, I misremembered my source! I remembered an association with the Latin 'legereā, but after I first responded, I thought to myself, āitās possible to get an /r/ word from an /l/ word, butā¦ā So I looked it up on Etymonline and it turns out 'readā actually comes from the West Saxon 'rƦdanā ā also Germanic, and already more or less equipped with the conjugation we want.
You were absolutely correct in your initial post; by all rights, even when taking Englishās multiple root-families different rules, 'readā really should conjugate like 'speakā and 'writeā!
