since lesbian visibility day is around the corner (april 26th to be exact), here’s some reminders of your casual lesbophobic behavior from your friendly neighborhood dyke:

butch & femme are lesbian only terms. these terms lose all their historical context outside of romancing women & ONLY women. the discourse surrounding this literally does not exist outside of social media (the person who wrote the most recent twitter thread that revived this discourse apologized for spreading false information) because it was a rhetoric started by lesbophobes who would rather refer to all lesbians as terfs & exclusionists than recognize that their appropriation of our terms is lesbophobic. + femme is not a synonym for womanhood (YES, that includes you labeling your feminine presenting aesthetic pinterest boards as “femme”) & using it as such is exclusionary to gnc & butch women.

sappho was a lesbian. again, the discourse surrounding this literally does not exist outside of social media (namely tumblr) & was created by lesbophobes (based off the bullshit heteronormative assumptions of cishet male historians that have repetitively erased sappho’s lesbian status) who think lesbians retaining their own history is “exclusionary.” anyone who has ever studied history will tell you that sappho was & is recognized as a lesbian, & denying or debating this is lesbophobic. flat fucking out.

understand our complex relationship with gender identity. most of us can’t relate to the stereotypical definition of womanhood because it so heavily centers men, thus many lesbians will identify outside of the gender binary. trans lesbians, non binary/agender lesbians, stone butch/bulldyke lesbians, lesbians who bind their chests & take testoerone, & lesbians who use masculine pronouns ARE STILL LESBIANS. respect that or congrats! you’re a lesbophobe!

remember the crosssections of race, gender & sexuality. black lesbians & ESPECIALLY black trans lesbians will face an astronomical amount of violence in comparison to those of us who are white. we white lesbians need to stand beside & support them at every. single. opportunity. THIS COMMUNITY WOULD LITERALLY NOT EXIST WITHOUT THEM.

non lesbians can’t reclaim dyke. i’m not even gonna explain this one. if i see one of you calling yourself a dyke i will literally burn your house to the fucking ground.

gold star lesbianism is inherently lesbophobic. just because you didn’t experience compulsory heterosexuality & never took dick doesn’t make you superior, nor does it make us lesbians who suffered through compulsory het any lesser.

lesbian is NOT a dirty word. stop erasing lesbian identities by referring to us as q*eer. i see this a lot from mainstream journalists who will outrightly refer to bi women by their sexuality, but when labeling lesbians will opt for q*eer instead. that shit is counterproductive & “progressivism” at the expense of the lesbian experience is fucking garbage. (note: this will vary from person to person, but overall we face excruciating internalized lesbophobia & don’t need your fear of saying the word lesbian to perpetuate it lmfao.) 

if you’re explicitly speaking about the oppression of LESBIANS, refer to it as lesbophobia. there are VERY specific issues we face that non lesbians simply can’t relate to & there needs to be that differentiation!

watch for stereotypes. make sure your muse isn’t being overly sexualized OR infantantilzed. that means don’t make sex the sole plot of your interactions, but also don’t avoid its possibility entirely either.

all in all, please for the love of all things holy, ALWAYS ask an actual lesbian about something instead of buying into some think piece authored by a non lesbian online. 9 times out of 10, their information is factually & historically incorrect, & exists solely to push a lesbophobic narrative.

if a lesbian tells you something is lesbophobic, fix your fucking shit, apologize & move on. stop getting angry & victimizing yourselves (perpetuating the “aggressive dyke” stereotype) instead of recognizing your lesbophobia.

acting like lesbianism is some kinda 18+ orientation is in fact lesbophobic. Like it or not, there are lesbians out there who are minors. If you sexualize them or tell them they’re too young to be lesbians congrats! you’re a lesbophobe and im also coming to break your legs.

shipping a character that’s been confirmed to be a lesbian with men is bad and if you do it or condone it you should feel bad! We literally get so little representation. You deciding to take one of the few characters we actually have and making them a non-lesbian is like parking in a handicap spot when there are DOZENS of other spots. Don’t fucking do it or condone it.

the  sound  that  carla  merits  from  craig  is  emotive  –  he  gasps  first  in  surprise  as  his  weight  shifts,  the  sensation  of  air  beneath  his  boots  instead  of  solid  ground  is  always  disorienting.  the  sheer  velocity  of  movement  makes  him  yelp,  abdomen  hitting  her  shoulder.  her  arm  is  tucked  around  his  back,  the  opposite  hand  planted  at  his  waistline,  gripping  the  belt  line  of  his  fatigues.  

his  combat  instinct  -  sharp  edged  as  it  is  (a  requirement,  as  a  sniper)  -  would  drive  him  to  jam  his  knees  into  her  and  flip  her  back  with  momentum.  but  this  is  the  woman  he  loves.  he  wouldn’t  hurt  her,  not  deliberately,  unless  she  wanted  to  rough  around  –  she  gives  no  indication  of  that  desire,  so  he  makes  no  initiation.

he  would  have  thought  he  would  be  too  heavy.  he  doesn’t  doubt  her,  he  merely  cares  for  the  strain  his  weight  would  offer.  he  huffs  out  a  breath,  arms  limp,  unsure  what  to  do  with  them.  something  likened  to  laughter  begins  to  stir  in  his  chest,  deep  and  felid.
