Bernie Sanders and Republican Sen. Ron Johnson make bipartisan appeal to delay health care vote

On Sunday morning, Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) both appeared on Meet the Press to warn their allies in the Senate against rushing a vote on the GOP’s draft health care plan before the July 4 holiday recess.

Johnson framed his call to delay the Senate vote on the American Health Care Act as a bid for transparency, arguing that it would give the public more time to see what the bill really entails.

“There’s no way we should be voting on this next week. No way,” Johnson said. “I have a hard time believing Wisconsin constituents or even myself will have enough time to properly evaluate this…”

Sanders reiterated the point: "There is no way on God’s Earth that this bill should be passed this week…We need a serious discussion.”

it’s not that we don’t think it’s bad shit

it’s just that it’s not NEW bad shit to someone who grew up under reagan and the bushes, exactly; what’s new is how blatant and hamfisted it is, not the actual agenda

also new is the fact that people care and are horrified

so we’re kinda like “aw not this shit again, i thought we were past this” rather than “end of the fucking world” about it, like “welp time to dig up those old dead kennedies albums”

idk babies we thought about getting nuked a LOT when i was growing up, it was just this constant cloud following us around, we made nuclear apocalypse jokes and it wasn’t even that dark because it was just life

it’s been nice not thinking about mushroom clouds for a while but it’s not exactly a shock that it’s come back up

i’m not trying to make you feel naive here, i’m just saying history is dark as fuck, and while you maybe knew that intellectually, you’ve been living in a very bright time up until now

i wish you could’ve gone your whole lives without knowing your government doesn’t have a problem with getting everyone killed for no fucking reason except to add another zero to the already absurd bank accounts of a tiny handful of elderly white men, but since shit fell out this way, i guess i just have to let you know that it isn’t something new, it’s the same battle we’ve been fighting all along

I know we grew up in the real world equivalent of the fake-grassed smiling-sunned Kids TV studios that raised us, but please don’t be mad at us for freaking out.

They told us everything was gonna be OK.

By the time we were adults, we knew it was our job to fix it, that it would be hard, but that it would be worth it. We donated to charity and recycled our plastic and turned off our lights and marched against unnecessary wars. Now, it’s as if none of that meant anything at all.

please don’t mistake my post for disapproval. i was just explaining that we’re not apathetic, we’re just not as surprised as you.

I feel a bit like we older millennials (I was born in the late 80s) are trapped in a bubble of broken promises - we all grew up watching Captain Planet and Free Willy and wanting to save the environment so the President of the United States denying climate change hits particularly hard.

All of this sounds petulant and childish, even to me, but the 7 year old inside me who drew dolphins all over everything and wanted to be a marine biologist (like all good 90s kids who don’t realize it mostly involves testing water samples or collecting barnacle samples for 10 consecutive years) is still screaming that she didn’t go through a childhood of getting pelted with slap bracelets and yoyos only for the world to turn out like this.

MONEY.

We have none. No money. Nobody wants to give us any.
