FINAL POSTER DESIGN - yay!!!
Final version after taking all of Caroline's very minor feedback notes.
FINAL REFINED MOTION DESIGN
Just fixed up some timing, basically everything I wanted to refine in my last tumblr post, I really love the pull back of the words, it creates a lot of depth. Which was definitely inspired by Erlich's poster (talked about in the previous post).
VERSION 3 - refined version of first concept motion poster
An updated version of my first concept motion poster, I tried out pushing different perspectives of depth in the second half the motion.
^^^ As I was really inspired by Ceci Erlich's Like swimming motion poster, which works with type moving/fading in and out in order to create visual interest with DEPTH.
I wanted to refine this original concept motion more (posted earlier on my tumblr) as I think it already looked great, but could've been improved by Erlich's employed sense of depth in her poster.
Also have that push and pull of the words coming forward (when the words appear one at a time), then have the ALL the words, push back behind the shadows. But yeah I think it looks really cool!!!
I will be refining it slightly more, as I think it does need a little more time after the full phrase appear BEFORE there's that change in depth. Giving the viewer more time to read the messaging, making it more accessible, and communicate the phrase clearer. I also want to keep the background shadows moving the ENTIRE time as it just keep the motion less unorganic and so static, as I think to communicate my nature messaging it wouldn't make sense to have those shadows become still at any point.
SECOND CONCEPT FOR MOTION DESIGN
I sort of took a take at my second storyboard motion concept, with some slight tweaks. The shadows and the text interact with one another in the start, creating slight push and pull.
I'm not quite sure about the start to be completely honest, so this most likely won't be my final motion design. While playing around with After Effects, I've thought of a way to refine my original V1 motion poster, so I will be trying that motion effect out.

Week 10 - motion design model research
I went on behance to look for some motion design inspiration and examples. I probably won't be implementing any of these visual strategies, but I think they are really useful for possible development.
Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects
Analog Collective Festival 26' - Matias, Mingorance
I really enjoy the contrast between the chaotic, with the scrambled letters and abstract shapes and squares moving/glitching
Feels organic and smooth despite the glitchy effects
nspired by the symbolic composition of Irworobongdo (The Sun, Moon and Five Peaks),this work reinterprets the philosophy of SC First Bank Pr
The Art of private - The season of abundance - Mmmeari
I love the revealing of the main scene
feels enchanting and serene, as the cloud shapes split to reveal
Graphic Design, GIF Animation, Poster Design, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects
Nameparade 2020 - Chung Future
super fun, natural motion
reminds me of bubbles, the motion shapes merges smoothly
Week 8 - annotation 04 motion analysis
Ceci Erlich - Like swimming (motion design)
feels poetic, minimal, could relate to the feeling of submerging underwater
each letter of each words is diving in and out in a smooth manner, all letters/words have the same flow
looks like a fade in/out with a complete blur when exiting to the background
This motion makes me think of swimming in calm water, alongside the deep green colour, it feels calm, reminds me of a lake
I like the fading in of the words, the motion adds to the flow of the organic nature and concept
With such a simplistic poster, the motion contribute to the depth and visual interest of the poster
Could be relevant to my work, as the I enjoy the fade in/out effect, feels like a distant memory, and a calmer more natural energy, which works well with the concept of my poster.
Acknowledging my use of AI (copilot) - explanatory doc
Example from annotation 01 - context (print poster) ORIGINAL WRITING (Too long): Afifa Chida’s 2019 Present Tense: Wāhine Toi poster, ‘Love will redeem us’ uses bold phrasing and contextual Arabic written motif to communicate the political tragedies of the 2019 Christchurch Mosque shooting. Combined with striking red that evokes strength and power, the main text is impactful, feeling inclusive with the phrasing to all New Zealanders, not just those directed affected by the tragedy. This design demonstrates the relevance of personal pronouns like ‘we’. It is relevant to my design process as I want my poster to have an inclusive nature, to feel like a warm invitation to the viewer, communicating the importance of connection with those around us while in a tranquil space.
After putting through copilot, and editing a bit myself afterwards: Afifa Chida’s 2019 Present Tense: Wāhine Toi poster, Love will redeem us, uses bold phrasing and an Arabic‑written motif to communicate the political tragedy of the Christchurch Mosque shooting. The striking red evokes strength and power, while the inclusive wording is impactful, speaking to all New Zealanders, not only those directly affected by the tragedy. This design highlights the impact of personal pronouns like “we.” It informs my own process, as I want my poster to feel welcoming and inclusive through the main phrase/text—a warm invitation into a tranquil space that encourages connection with others.
I just asked copilot to tightened my writing to be under 100 words, I think it did an okay job at reducing my writing, but I ended up adding and adjusting a couple of sentences. I ended up doing this for most of my writing, as I always wanted to check for clarity, and making sure I was keeping it consise, in that 100 word limit (200 for methods annotations)
Updated - explanatory doc, context 4 poster
*Im writing some analysis notes for another Present tense: Wāhine Toi Aotearoa poster, as this one makes more sense for my new updated poster*
Poster by: Afifa Chida 2019, 'Love will redeem us' Intent behind Present tense: "address any issue social, cultural, or political issue of female designers choice". DESIGN ELEMENTS/VISUAL STRATEGIES - Alignment - text - structure -visual motif (Arabic writing) - They've broken the phrase up to create emphasis on the two sections - Type is bold, mirroring the strong messaging on the poster COMMUNICATION - Makes me automatically think of the 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch, this is communicated through the Arabic writing motif that almost looks and is made to look like a motif pattern - The phrase is very striking, feels inclusive with the phrasing to all New Zealanders not just those who were directly affected by the tragedy, e.g "WE are broken hearted"... "WE have shown that New Zealand is unbreakable". - Uses keywords of Broken hearted, not broken, unbreakable, hints to a comeback from a tragedy, something traumatic to society and the people. RELEVANCE HOW COULD THE DESIGN BE RELEVANT TO MY WORK? The 'Love will redeem us' poster from Present tense: Wahine Toi Aotearoa demonstrates the importance of visual language, how it promotes inclusivity. With Albert park being a shared space, I am influenced by the inclusive nature of 'Love will redeem us', and want my text element to feel like a warm invitation, with inclusive language/ personal pronouns or possibly imperative language, hopefully to speak to the viewer about connecting with those around us while in the tranquil space.
Phrasing like we, you, us, and our (personal pronouns) would feel inviting and theorically persuading for the reader to join and come to the event.
MOTION EXPLORATION - V2 I've explored with adding to the initial motion I created, listening to my friend's feedback for adding slight motion during when the text fades in.
I quite like this suggestion, and I think this could be my final motion for my poster design, however I will probably try out one of my other concepts as well.

Week 12 - Feedback from peers and Caroline
FEEDBACK FROM CAROLINE: - angle the overarching so it flows better with the rest of the phrase - could minimise the size, layout, and general amount of secondary text - remove some dark shadow from the bottom near the word 'tree'
FEEDBACK FROM PEERS FOR MOTION : - Likes the movement at the start - Would love to see even slight movement of the shadows during when the text/phrase would appear -overall would just like to see more added when the text comes in
NEXTS STEP FOR MYSELF: - update motion poster, try out suggestion from my peers - Explore another motion if I have time, possible the concept I had drawn in my storyboarding, where the shadows overlap the text
NOTE TO SELF: UPDATE EXPLANATORY DOC
Week 11 SDL Positioning statement - process
What caught your attention about your site? What are you trying to communicate? - My intial thoughts of Albert Park was that it felt like an incredibly tranquil and peaceful place away from the busy heart of the city - Albert Park has always been a place I either come alone to find peace, or to have a slow, lazy catch up with friends under the very old and tall trees - I liked the idea of connecting with us other within the park
KEY ELEMENTS OF MY POSTER - SHAPE - COLOUR - COMPOSITION
Review your Annotations and any other relevant design examples Aafifa Chida - 'Love will redeem us' , Present tense: Wahine Toi Aotearoa
I want my poster to invite the viewer into a tranquil place, to find a slow, restorative peace. The text content, is drawn from what caught my attention in Albert Park. Finding a place under the overarching trees to be free from chaos, and there is a dark gradient with around the text suggesting the world's noise fading while surrounding by the trees. The 'Love will redeem us' poster from Present tense: Wahine Toi Aotearoa demonstrates the importance of visual language, how it promotes inclusivity. The invitation-like nature of my poster's phrase, uses this inclusive strategy, by making a suggestion, 'Let us sit under the overarching tree', speaks to the viewer, emphasising the importance of connection and slow moments in Albert Park.
MOTION EXPLORATION - first motion animated poster.
I ended up experimenting with concept 3 on my storyboarding (posted below this) and working with the main ideas of communicating peace, fleeting moments, and tranquility.
I tried looking for more complex tutorials for moving the shadows in the background, but was unsuccessful, so for this first draft I just stuck with moving the positioning and scale to convey the tranquility of sitting under the trees of Albert Park.
I also tried the original motion plan of having the text move from bottom to top in a swirl motion, but i didn't think it conveyed a sense of peace well. At least that's what i felt when trying it, but I am willing to giving that idea another go, maybe having the text move a lot slower to emphasise calmness. So instead I felt that just a ease of a fade in felt calm and easier to read instead loads of words moving all over the poster.
I noticed that throughout researching and taking notes of motion posters (like the one for BBC) that the way text is conveyed through movement communicates drastically different ideas. For example the BBC motioned poster felt confident, sure of it's messaging through the smooth fast slice of text horizontally. While I want to communicate slow peaceful moments that you have while soaking up the light while in Albert Park. Therefore the phrase on my poster appears calmly, and quietly, appearing one after the other, walking down the page smoothly.
I also added a subtle opacity change to convey the glow of light peeking through tree leaves, and to convey the peaceful messaging better.
For my next draft I want to try out working with my other motion concept storyboard, and revisiting the tutorials David made posted to panopto like the masking effects, as I want the shadows to cover parts of the main phrase to slowly reveal the message.
Storyboarding for motion poster
These are some concepts I've been storyboarding over the past few weeks. Looking back on these now and doing some reflecting, some of these are quite complex for a motion poster that would last 10 ish seconds. I'll definitely experiment with my first draft as I want it to clearly communicate peace and tranquility through the motion effects.
Refining poster even more
These are just some more experiments I made with poster design, working on the feedback I was given, and what I evaluated from last week's class.
I played around with the phrase/type positioning on the poster, refining how each word would sit. I also took the advice from David, of playing around with how the words could sit within the shadow shapes in the background.
So I combined that idea of working with the pockets in the background, with slotting the secondary text within the main phrase.
The last poster is probably the one I'm most content with at the moment, I really like how I have created that further distinction between main and secondary text through colour (changing to yellow), and size.

Week 10 - POOL event
So for Week 10's lecturer feedback I brought in the poster next to the feedback.
The ones below are my original from before the formative, after feedback experimenting with more texture, type, and size of type. The last one, was just a random experiment after talking to David, and how he thought I could try my phrase from my other poster on this original design that I had. After testing it out, I don't really think it works that well but it was nice to see how something like that work look.
For Week 10, I really tried on focusing on strengthening this OG poster design, as issues from before were that it lack depth/texture/visual and that the typeface could be improved (all feedback from my lecturers which I agreed to, and have been working on).
So things that were great were: - The text layout looks like it's walking, or flowing - This poster works better in general, to keep working on this one
Elements I can work on: - Secondary text creating depth - Moving my secondary text in-between the main text (as drawn on the poster in the photo) - experiment with changing the colour of secondary text -Keep exploring type position
AND NOTE TO SELF is to start working on motion. As I have no experimenting with animating my posters at all yet. I want to hopefully have something to bring to Week 11, in order to get some feedback on motion.
Week 9 - lecturer feedback
This is the version of my refined poster that I brought with me to week 9's class for lecturer one-on-one feedback. below is the feedback I got back from David, and the right side is the poster from before Week 9. I took the advice of both David and Paul, in refining the poster, making the poster less hectic and busy to match my concept of tranquility better.
For the week 9 poster, I will work on making clear decisions about the type's size, as per David's feedback. I agree as well, since I've noticed that they're all different sizes however, if that was intentional, i think i would need higher contrast in the sizes to create that 'push and pull' effect and emphasis on words. (so either all roughly same size, or very different to create contrast or emphasis on certain words)
Everything is quite right leaning right now, and kind of flows in a diagonal right now, so I could work on adding something in the left bottom corner.
And I could play with fading/pausing with my motion effects.
But the main feedback I got back was to try to experiment with my first poster. Both David and I agreed that the colours, the vibe feels more right for Albert Park in the first poster I created, so I definitely want to give that poster another shot.
