He pulled away from her and smiled, stepping out of her way from the dish he had taken from her earlier. He didn’t know what else he was supposed to tell her, how he was supposed to help her. At one point in he assumed he could make any problem of her’s go away. Now, he couldn’t even make her see that it was going to be okay, that everything that was happening now would soon be in the distant past. It was not like their parents wouldn’t protect them. With who his father was, and who her’s was, there would be to be a substantial amount of evidence to even think about convicting them.

But the words wouldn’t come out. He couldn’t get them to come out because part of him didn’t believe it. He couldn’t believe that they would get away with this. He couldn’t believe that justice wouldn’t be served for someone, even if it was Julia. 

She didn't want to get into an argument with him, not after this was the first time they were alone together. It wasn't right, and they were both dealing with something huge. If they were to fight, it could very well end their relationship, and she wasn't ready for that to happen, not after everything they went through.

As he pulled away, she looked up at him, tears burning her cheeks from her earlier crying session. He smiled at her, and things were supposed to feel better. The problem was that, no matter how much she loved his smile, it just wasn't going to get better by seeing his pearly whites. She gave him a weak smile in return, to show him that she really did appreciate his efforts at making her feel better. Even if it was just the hug and smiling at her, the small things were what she missed the most.

She sighed, looking down at the sink where there were dishes for her to wash. She was already tired, and emotionally drained. "Nate. Thank you, for being here for me. But I think you should go. It's late and you're probably as tired as I am." She made it seem like it wasn't her kicking him out, even if that's what it was. They just couldn't stay alone together anymore. They didn't know how to.

"I'll see you tomorrow in class?"

“…But I agree. Not about the, erm, sucking because I wouldn’t let any of those disgusting cretins anywhere near my—

“Tequila?" He cocked his head to a sip of beer. "I only drink tequila when there’s something I need off my mind." When the girl turned to him with a smile, he quickly flickered his gaze over her full appearance. Luckily for her, turning didn’t take as much balance as she seemed to lack in that moment.

The guy next to her was kind enough to offer her a drink, and quite frankly she was surprised it actually happened. She felt flattered in her drunken state, and was definitely not thinking about how this could look if someone she knew was watching her. She would have been embarrassed by her behavior if she had been sober enough. Instead, she just let herself go, and made conversation with her current drinking buddy.

"I hear it's something girls drink to have fun, so I figured I'd try it. But I think I'll switch for a little bit before I go overboard." She didn't really answer the part about taking her mind off things, but knowing her and her very low tolerance, she may mention it later on. She nodded slowly, already feeling her head spin a bit as she did so. "Flying solo like Jason Derulo." She laughed at her own attempt of a joke, probably making the guy think that she was one of those stupid drunks. 

"What about you?"

They had just received their syllabuses, neatly stacked and stapled on their desks. Each page was more boring than the last; Eric knew because he’d flipped through them lazily, mentally rejecting each stupid passage on what pompous thinker they were going to focus on. He was especially dismayed at the apparent focus on the Rationalists in the first half of the term. Eric didn’t know much about philosophy, but he had neglected to skip enough classes in high school to know that the Rationalists were theorists— speculating their way to “enlightenment”. Eric would have taken the Stoics any other day— Hell, even the Cynics. At least that Diogenes guy had a sense of humour. He interrupted the dry explanation taking place and raised his hand with a mischievous grin. Professor Lontoc allowed him to speak.

Maybe except for the asshole that decided to show that he was smarter than everyone else.

There were times when she could be a know-it-all, but she knew not to do it on the first day of class. And she knew way better than to interrupt the teacher and basically question the topics of discussion. It wasn't even halfway through the class period before this guy decided to start bashing the Rationalists, saying they basically didn't do anything unlike the Cynics. Honestly, it was annoying to her, and she was about ready to say something. Usually she wouldn't, especially not on the first day. But this guy's attitude was already making her livid.
