Indifference.
Indifference. Is it what’s wrong with the world? Or what we should strive for. America was formed on the idea of protecting our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So what is happiness? The word happy by definition means feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. Contentment. Not wanting for more or less than what you have. We strive for contentment. But wouldn’t someone who is content with their life, feel indifferent towards everything else? If you found yourself in a world where most people were content, happy, there would be a lot less need for change or forward progress regardless of the actual state of the world. Someone who is completely content with their life is not going to be an advocate for change. But does that make them any less of a good person? In a society where happiness is the ultimate goal, we also idolize advocates of change. People who are unhappy with their world and work to change it. To me those two ideals seem like complete opposites. Or perhaps, my own disconnect is that I think the idea of contentment and indifference are similar when in fact they aren’t similar at all. Maybe the purpose of life is just to learn how to find balance between happiness and indifference. The balance between accepting what you have and advocating for more. If none of us wanted for more and accepted the hand we were dealt, could we be happy? And what would that mean for society as a whole?
