OPEN: male op. baron/leader role
Into the Badlands Verse.
loosely based on this. but not mandatory for a plot by any means.
âBaroness,â Mariâs voice disturbed sweet dreams - images distorting from him holding their infant to a distorted nothingness.
âBaroness, there is movement.â
Valentinaâs eyes shot open and she gasped. âIs it him? Is he alive?â Her voice croaked as she pulled the throw off and stood up almost immediately.
She wandered out of the living room, breathless and lightheaded as she needed to see for herself.
Once outside, she saw the walls opening and bodies stumble in, some limping and others dragged on.
âWhere is he?â She shouted, scaring herself with the amount of strength straining her voice.
She reached the point where she was merely feet away from the crowd of wounded men and horses. And that was when she saw the blonde curls and the air yanked from her lungs in despair.
He wasnât moving, he was limp and being supported up by two clippers. His head hung low as his feet were dragging not far behind him.
âIs heâŚ.â she could barely see through her tear-blurred vision, eyes stinging as the pain begged to be released with a blink.
That was when the two men holding him collapsed as did he.
âNO!â Valentina ran over to him, dropping harshly onto her knees. She took his head in her hands and placed it on her lap. He was bleeding and his chest was still.
âWake up. WAKE UP.â She demanded as she finally blinked, her hand hovering over his nose for a sign of life. She barely felt an exhale, pulling a gasp from her trembling lips.
âStay with me⌠please stay with me!â
It had been an ambush, an attack that none of them saw coming. One minute they were prepared for a meeting between barons and baronesses, the next swords were being swung and Ryder was making a run for it straight through the building and out into the grounds. Heâd never been more thankful for making Valentina stay at home, had never thanked the heavens more for keeping her far, far away from all of this. For leaving his best clippers behind to make sure her and their child would be okay. It had been days hed been away, days and days and days, so many even heâd lost track and heâd be damned if he was going to lose it now.Â
Except, apparently, fate had a funny way of working. Because of course, of all the people to find him at the centre of a maze of hedges, it had to be his father. Ryder didnât remember much from those moments. He remembered the fear, the nausea deep in his stomach knowing he was probably about to die. He remembered trying to keep a brave face, urging himself over and over to just kill him already but... he couldnât. Not his father. Despite everything, despite the hell heâd gone through in his life because of that man... he couldnât.Â
He remembered the pain as the knife had stabbed straight through him, remembered the taste of iron in his throat and mouth and his knees giving out. He could vaguely remember the sound of his fatherâs regretful cry but... Nothing much else.Â
Not until there was a feint light and the pain of being pulled - carried? - somewhere. He weaved in and out of consciousness, little murmurs of blood and infection and wounds or death. But it was one particular murmur, seemingly days later... or maybe it was more a voice, words that sounded as good as a song, as a promise that he was going to be okay. Even with their frantic, desperate nature.Â
Valentina.
âBaroness, heâs gravely injured, we must treat the wounds immediately. We... we made a makeshift bandage but Iâm not sure how much longer it will hold.â
