There was one vending machine on campus that sold the one brand of raspberry soda she needed whenever she was to begin a sculpting project for class. Three dimensional mediums had never been her strong point, but she found she got the job done in a lot better temperament with much more time to spare for details if she had her favorite excessively sugared, effectively caffeinated in hand. It was only slightly inconvenient that the one machine was a bit of a walk from the art room, nestled in a corner at the end of a hallway lined with practice rooms for the many music students who came and went (often exhausting the supply of her raspberry soda in the process). She didnât mind making the short journey, often, as she was now, draped in a smock far too large for her petite frame covered in paint splatters and chalk stains and bits and pieces of stray clay, an array of details left by years of students with active hands and overactive imaginations.
However, this time, she never made it to her destination, the shining blue beacon at the end of the hall lit up with flashy logos and bright LEDs, which was probably for the best seeing as how the raspberry cans had run out two days ago and had yet to be restocked. A song caught her ear through the opening of a propped open door, an entrance to one of the practice rooms. She wasnât sure if the recording was familiar or merely intriguing, but she found herself peeking through the crack in the door frame, gently nudging it open further with her shoulder to maybe hear the music a bit clearly. Sheâd expected to see one or two students huddled around a sound system, maybe practicing the accompaniment with instruments in hand, or trying their hand at transcribing (which would be a lousy pastime, thought Hayi, whoâd always been miserable at reading music). However she was greeted with the sight of a singer, in person, the owner of the voice she thought had been a professional recording it was so good. âWow,â the word passed her lips in a whisper as she unconsciously pushed the door open further, slipping into the room almost silently to watch the vocalist. About a minute later, it occurred to her that she might be intruding, but when she moved to slink out again as quietly as she came, her smock caught on a nearby music stand, causing it to topple noisily into another stand next to it and shattering her attempt at discreetness completely. âSorry,â she uttered sheepishly, cringing slightly as another stand went down, âReally sorry. Youâre really good though, like amazing good! I heard you singing when I walked past and I thought you were a recordingâŚâ she trailed off, realizing she was probably acting far too comfortably with someone whose practice sheâd just interrupted, âReally, though. Sorry about that.â

But any of Hayiâs attempts to sketch an outline of this imaginative shift in reality onto paper were unsatisfactory, as she found herself far too distracted by the unsettling shade of blue the sky had decided to be that day. Thatâs it, she thought, realization snapping in place next to posh ladybug girls. It was the color of the sky, the shade. It just wasnât right, as if it were trying to be too pale and too blue all at once. It was almost unfinished, as if itâd attempted to shift into a narrow and specific segment of the color wheel and given up a millimeter of the way there, leaving it at some unsatisfactory in-between that was unsuitable for any sky to be. Rather than consoling her, the epiphany upset Hayi, her complacent pout shifting into a disappointed frown, as if she were scolding the atmosphere with her mind. This would not do at all.
She huffed, blowing careless strands of hair out of her face, and got to her feet, suddenly on a new mission of creative inspiration. The bits of grass from the well-manicured field still lingering in her hair went unnoticed by Hayi as she made a beeline for her destination, determined to beat the annoying color of the sky and get something drawn up. The only obstacle in her way now would be finding her muse. Who knows where he might have wandered off to at this time of day? She opted for the main building, deciding most people were likely studying around this time, because people often seemed to study inside the most when the weather outside was the best. People were strange that way. She traveled aimlessly, trying to ignore the hateful blue color that peeked its way through windows every now and then, and her legs eventually carried her to the library, which would undoubtedly be crowded with students attempting to prepare for the bloody battle that was exam season. He was easy enough to spot in a crowd.
âOppa!â sheâd taken to calling him by the honorific almost immediately after acquainting herself with him, despite the fact that sheâd never actually asked permission to do so in the first place (which had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he had an English name and sheâd always been less than satisfactory at English and was constantly struggling with her Râs, no nothing at all). It only seemed fitting considering how much time she spent staring at his face and replicating it on canvas. She hesitated for only a split second at the few shushes aimed in her direction before continuing with an eager grin in a just slightly quieter tone, "I need to borrow your face for a while."
Hello, welcome to Bullworth! Iâm Jihoon, I hope you enjoy your time here, and if you ever need anything at all, donât be afraid to come ask.
"Thanks! WaitâŚ" She blinked for a moment, squinting her eyes and examining the student before her, "I know you. How do I know you." Another moment or two passed before her staring ceased, replaced by a triumphant look of realization, "Youâre the tree guy! The one at that school and a bunch of people got involvedâŚ? You are the tree guy, right? Otherwise Iâm super embarrassed."
"You're the new roommate, right? Uh -- 5A?"
She tore her eyes from the digital display of her DSLR, her eyes lighting up with recognition as she carelessly pushed messy brown locks out of her face to reveal a warm smile, "Yep! Lee Hayi. You're roomie number one then?"
