Gonna be honest regarding my thoughts about the new Fire Emblem mobile game.
Mainly, I do not think it's good, but I also do not understand why the first instinct is to dismiss it as irredeemable garbage.
The gameplay needs some SEVERE work, that's for sure. It's very rough, the matches feel inconsequential, there's no penalties for not guessing correctly, no communication between players.
I like the general look of the game, the UI has a good feel to it, the character designs are interesting imo but I get why not everyone would be into it. I like the art too, but I think the 3D chibis are maybe a little too lacking in detail, which I understand as a necessity in a mobile game, but the 2D chibis from FEH are undeniably better.
Overall I don't think it's unsalvageable. And the general opinion of it being irredeemable trash kind of pisses me off? Maybe it's just the gamedev in me, but I can easily see the way this game could work. I don't think the lack of "Fire Emblem" feel is a death sentence.
(Also the criticism I've seen that this being a mobile game with a gamepass means it's inherently irredeemable rings a little bit hollow considering Umamusume did not get that kind of criticism.)
Now, what changes I would make to make the game more engaging. Keep in mind these are copypasted from discord so:
make the matches longer: so far match ive had has only had battles that last a minute or so at most, which makes them feel really inconsequential. i know the average mobile player has the attention span of a goldfish but longer is the way to go with this game i feel. theres got to be a sweet spot where battles feel more interesting and have a reasonable time limit without feeling like theyre all worthless
more players: three players makes it really easy to figure out whos the traitor, more players per match would make it more tricky, really test the players ability to keep track of their team mates. yes its a mobile game, but its meant to be strategic. so make it strategic. unironically like among us, people had the attention span to figure out who the impostors were even though a good chunk of the player base was on mobile and the sun didnt collapse, so.
more time in voting, more communication: no brainer, there SHOULD be some sort of system to at least voice your suspicions instead of making it look like youre letting the auto cursor vote for you. most of my matches no one even bothered to guess anyone other than the first person on the list. Nintendo is iffy on player to player communication for obvious reasons, but there ARE ways to work it.
more penalties for choosing the wrong person: right now there's zero penalty for guessing wrong, and successfully tricking your teammates gives you virtually zero bonuses. it feels really unbalanced in that front, so giving more incentive to actually trick your team mates would make it more involved.
more control over the characters: its rts, so there has to be some autobattle element to it, but being able to choose what fighting style your character goes for, what route they will take, what target they'll prioritize, giving the players more options to make the battle feel more responsive and less random.
more characters: the OCs are cute but no anchoring FE characters makes it hard to get players into the game.

Every time I try looking up FE Shadows I feel like all I see is people saying its shit. And personally, I think saying its irredeemable is just wrong. Yes, I think that it has issues. I feel like the social deduction part doesn't have enough conseuqences. I'd like for bigger lobbies aside from just 3 players. And the gameplay is a little clunky.
But its been out for less than a day at this point. This game was shadow dropped with no warning and its going to have some kinks like all mobile games like this.
The art looks amazing, the music is up to par with the rest of the franchise and the main lord and their love interest are in a Rose of Versailles-esque romance that I personally love!!!
Yes, they made Lyn into an umamusume. Yes, the writing is campy. But this is the same franchise that had its latest mainline protag ressurect through the power of friendship and essentially have a "yes, I am iron man" moment but replace iron man with fire emblem. Camp is nothing new for this franchise.
What I'm scared of is this game essentially getting the Yugioh Cross Duel treatment; poor marketing, not getting many players, and then quickly being swept under the rug only to be maintained by private servers. And I really don't want that to happen. I just want people to give this game an actual chance.
YES IT'S ACTUALLY REALLY FUN
Same people who're hating on it are those who hated FE Engage, bc people don't like new and different. Is it Fire Emblem? Not really. Is it fun as hell? Fuck yea it is. And best part? It's all F2P with ZERO gatcha and WITHOUT RAMPANT SPOILERS (looking at you heroes). You don't even need to know anything abt FE to get into it, and the designs are amaziiiiing. Anyway imma get all my friends into it and snuggle up with my hot (furry) husband Dimitri.
Never kill yourself because what if the next fire emblem game drops out of fucking nowhere and features not only dog girl canon lesbian lord but also Dimitri’s canon fursona. What the fuck. What the fuck.

The three members of the production team are all Chinese Transformers fans. The voice actor just turned 17 this year (youth is awesome). The artist mainly draws Gundam. The funniest thing is that only the voice actor's first foreign language is real English, and the rest of us are all fake English.
