Have you seen I Saw The TV Glow?? ISTTG and the obedient route of Loved hit emotional notes nothing else ever has for me (particularly the timeskip/second "Are you a boy or a girl" hit like a truck moments respectively hit me like a freight train), so I was kinda curious if you had/had any thoughts.
No, I hadn’t seen it, I’ve just watched it now.
I am profoundly affected ;;
It means a lot to me especially in the context of CFP too…
Yeah, I thought at the start it would deal with the screen-dismantling idea I previously mentioned in an aesthetic way, but by the end I was surprised at how much further it articulated the heart of that concept within a “non-interactive” medium.
I’ve watched a lot of things labelled as “horror” this past year, this is the only thing that really meets the standard I’ve been looking for. Thanks for the recommendation.
Wow, first I'm flattered you watched my rec so soon LOL. it's a movie that's hit a lot of people I know really hard, it really does capture those feelings so well.
I'm curious, when you say that it gets at the heart of a dismantled screen, do you mean between the viewer and the film, or between Owen and the tv show?? Or, fitting the blurring of a boundary, something of both?? (I'll also admit the cfg comparison is less obvious to me, so if you had more to say on that I'd be happy to hear :) )
Between the viewer and the film. Great cinema will grab the viewer and put them in some empathetic space of the protagonist, sure, but this one is very aggressively interested in looking reaching to the viewer specifically. It applies blunt technique like throwing text directly (familiar...) but the subtler modes of connection in editing, pacing, and very cool imaging (I remember there being a perfectly timed few frame fx flash somewhere in the middle, connecting to the head-in-tv part, and also the tidiness of: owen-in-a-globe, but therefore, where in the globe are *you*?)
In terms of CFP, it reminds me of some circumstances related to the production of the work, more than anything specifically within it.

I revisit Chernobyl Fairy Pool a lot, it's such a perfect atmosphere and like. It's hard to put into words but the ways the girls are treated like sirens, words implying staying around them will destroy you, and yet they're powerless and small. Constant imagery of disability and kink and queerness and beneath the outward "these dangerous strange women are tempting you to your doom" you get all these little hints at how in need they are, that they don't have other options, and of course that you're the one who controls when they come and go. You can even touch them, if you'd like. It really reckons with the whole woman as temptress thing in such an evocative way. And its sick as hell.
Thanks for writing, I really like your thoughts on the work.
You know, there’s a lot of ground to explore in the medium once you’re willing to dismantle the screen - which separates and protects the player. I feel CFP was the most delicate and carefree touch I had in that regard so far.
Going from Loved to your website, it leading me to vgfh, and that making me wonder what twine games are, and that making me discover queers in love at the end of the world and going through those three in quick succession was very important to me, that you outgrew some of it makes sense but I'm happy that pathway is preserved a little here now :)
Ah fantastic, makes my day to hear it! That's really why I first put those links up there, the structure of the internet into the late 2010s made it harder and harder to discover fiery ways of thinking, so I wanted to put together the best jumping-off points I'd known of that could let people start exploring new directions.

Why did you remove the part of your website that talked about influences and manifestos? Am I stupid and its just somewhere else now?
It’s true, I removed those from my site, along with most things… I wanted to return to some kind of blank slate. Maybe it’s a destructive era? At any rate, my philosophy of play has evolved a lot since I discovered those things, and I felt it was perhaps lacking more recent expression on my part.
Anyway, here's what was up there:
10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki
video game feminization hypnosis by princess
Interview with Bill Wurtz
The Future of Capitalism by Yanis Varoufakis
Business Cosplay by Thecatamites
Talk on Paintings for the Cat Dimension by David Surman
Rejecta Manifesto by Pietro Righi Riva
On Trying to Make Idea-Rich Games by Jonathan Blow
Videogames and the Spirit of Capitalism by Paolo Pedercini
Fuck Videogames by Darius Kazemi

found and played pretty much all of your stuff today- Loved is really wonderful as I'm sure you already know but How to Fill a Person and A Horrible Waste are also very good, I like them a lot.
Thanks! It's uncommon to get messages about my newer work, feel very happy to hear it. :)
Hi I just wanted to say that Loved really is amazing. I used to be super anti video game and then I saw your website and- well, the way you talked about the medium you work in fascinated me. And suddenly the hardcore filmmaker that I am is interested in entering experimental game designing! I love your work, I love how you talk, I love how you talk about your work. I never, ever, had considered games as a legit art medium until I came across Loved on Tumblr. So thanks!
🖤 always more caverns to escape, and more possibilities around the corner
