You Have to Fit In Better, Mr. Jones
Daniel Jones had been at Harrington & Blythe for exactly six weeks when the managing partner summoned him upstairs.
At twenty-six, Daniel was the youngest associate the firm had hired in years. He arrived before eight every morning in a sharply tailored navy suit, polished brown shoes, and a green-striped tie that matched the company colors. His brown hair was thick, carefully styled, and one of the few things about himself he was openly vain about.
He had expected the meeting to concern his performance.
Instead, Mr. Harrington sat behind his enormous walnut desk and studied him in silence.
The managing partner was a large, heavy man in his late forties. His stomach strained the buttons of his white shirt, his face was round and pale, and only a thin crescent of hair remained around his otherwise bald head.
Daniel shifted in the visitorβs chair.
βIs there a problem with the Mercer account?β
βThe Mercer account is excellent,β Harrington replied.
βMy billable hours?β
βAbove target.β
βThen why am I here?β
Harrington folded his hands over his stomach.
βYou donβt fit in.β
Daniel glanced around the room.
They wore identical navy suits.
Identical ties.
Even their shirts had come from the same approved supplier.
βIβm following the dress code.β
βThe dress code is only the beginning.β
Harrington leaned back, making the leather chair creak beneath him.
βThe clients find you distracting.β
βDistracting?β
βYou look ambitious.β
βI am ambitious.β
βPrecisely.β
Daniel frowned.
Harrington continued calmly.
βOur most valuable clients do not want to be advised by someone who looks as though he intends to replace them. They trust stability. Familiarity. Men who appear settled.β
βIβm not sure I understand.β
βYou are too young, too lean, and far too carefully groomed.β
Daniel stared at him.
βThose are complaints?β
βAt Harrington & Blythe, they are cultural incompatibilities.β
The Integration Shake
Harrington opened a drawer and removed a plastic cup filled with a thick beige drink.
Condensation ran down its sides. A transparent lid covered the top, and a wide straw protruded from it.
He pushed it across the desk.
Daniel did not take it.
βWhat is that?β
βThe partner integration formula.β
βIt looks like a milkshake.β
βThat is essentially what it is.β
βI donβt want a milkshake.β
Harrington extended it farther.
βYou have to fit in better, Mr. Jones.β
Something about his tone made the words feel less like advice than a contractual obligation.
Daniel reluctantly accepted the cup.
It was heavier than expected.
βWhatβs in it?β
βCream, protein, carbohydrates, and a proprietary cultural-adjustment compound.β
βA what?β
βHuman Resources approved it.β
That was somehow less reassuring.
Daniel sniffed the straw and grimaced.
The drink smelled strongly of vanilla, butter, and roasted hazelnuts.
βDo I have to finish it?β
βOne serving is sufficient.β
Daniel took a cautious sip.
The shake was incredibly rich. It coated his tongue and throat, almost too thick to swallow. Beneath the sweetness lay a faint medicinal bitterness.
Harrington watched him without blinking.
Daniel took another sip simply to end the awkward silence.
Then another.
By the time he noticed the cup was half empty, warmth had begun spreading through his stomach.
He lowered it.
βI think thatβs enough.β
Harrington glanced at his watch.
βToo late.β
Settling In
Daniel felt the first change beneath his shirt.
His stomach gave a deep gurgle.
He pressed one hand against his abdomen and felt it swell beneath his palm. The flat surface softened, pushing gradually against his belt.
Daniel looked down.
His shirt had tightened.
βWhat did you give me?β
βRemain calm.β
βMy clothes are shrinking.β
βNo, Mr. Jones. You are expanding.β
The warmth surged outward.
Danielβs narrow waist thickened. A small belly formed over his belt, growing rounder with each breath. His jacket pulled across the middle until he hurriedly unbuttoned it.
His thighs pressed against his tailored trousers.
His hips widened against the sides of the chair.
Daniel dropped the shake.
It bounced against his leg, splashing beige liquid over his suit and the carpet.
Harrington watched with mild concern.
βWasteful.β
Danielβs stomach pushed outward in a sudden heavy swell.
He gasped.
Within seconds, the modest belly became a substantial gut, straining every button of his white shirt. His tie was forced forward across the expanding curve.
His face softened next.
Fullness gathered beneath his chin. His cheeks rounded. The sharp line of his jaw disappeared beneath new weight.
Daniel gripped the arms of the chair.
βMake it stop!β
βThe formula establishes an appropriate executive profile.β
βIβm not an executive!β
βYou are being prepared.β
His chest became heavy beneath his shirt. His shoulders broadened, not with muscle but with mass. Thick flesh accumulated around his neck, arms, and waist.
The chair sank lower under him.
Danielβs shirt buttons pulled visibly apart.
One flew loose and struck the desk.
He stared down at himself.
Only minutes earlier, he had weighed seventy-six kilograms.
Now he looked close to twice that.
Harrington nodded approvingly.
βMuch more authoritative.β
Danielβs mouth fell open.
βYou did this deliberately?β
βWe all underwent integration.β
Harrington gestured to a framed photograph on the shelf. It showed the firmβs senior partners standing together at a retreat.
Every man was heavy.
Every man wore the same navy suit.
And almost every one of them was bald.
Danielβs eyes rose slowly toward Harringtonβs scalp.
βNo.β
The Second Adjustment
His scalp began to itch.
Daniel shoved both hands into his thick brown hair.
Several strands remained between his fingers.
He froze.
Another clump slid across his forehead.
βNo, no, no.β
He scratched at his crown.
Hair loosened in handfuls.
Daniel stood too quickly, causing the chair to roll backward. His newly enlarged body swayed as he struggled for balance.
He ran one hand across the top of his head.
A broad patch of exposed scalp had appeared behind his hairline.
Harrington calmly straightened the papers on his desk.
βThe follicles are merely adopting the approved maturity pattern.β
βIβm twenty-six!β
βClients will assume you possess more experience.β
Daniel stumbled toward the door.
His trousers strained with every step. His belt cut painfully beneath his stomach, and his jacket no longer met across his front.
More hair fell onto his shoulders.
By the time he reached the corridor, his formerly thick hair had thinned to wisps across the top. The sides remained fuller, making the loss even more obvious.
Daniel caught sight of himself in the glass wall of a conference room.
A huge, balding man stared back.
His face still carried traces of youth, but the body surrounding it looked middle-aged and established.
He recoiled from his own reflection.
Several employees looked up from their desks.
None appeared surprised.
One junior accountant merely nodded sympathetically.
βFirst partner meeting?β
Daniel stared at him.
The accountant touched his own receding hairline.
βThey got me last quarter.β
The Washroom
Daniel hurried down the hallway, breathing heavily.
His new size made running almost impossible. His thighs rubbed together, his shirt had partly escaped his waistband, and every step caused his stomach to bounce against his belt.
He locked himself inside the executive washroom and stood before the mirror.
The sight was worse under the bright lighting.
His cheeks were flushed. A double chin rested above his collar. His enormous stomach projected beyond the edge of the counter.
But his hair held his attention.
The top had become almost entirely bare.
Only a few damp strands crossed the exposed scalp, while a thinning ring remained around the sides and back.
Daniel placed both hands against his head.
βThis canβt be permanent.β
His phone rang.
MR. HARRINGTON
Daniel answered furiously.
βWhat have you done to me?β
βYou will find an address in your calendar.β
βIβm calling the police.β
βYou signed the employee cultural-alignment agreement.β
βThat was about professional conduct!β
βParagraph seventeen defines physical presentation as part of professional conduct.β
Daniel could hear papers turning on the other end.
βYour barber appointment begins in twenty minutes.β
βI am not going to a barber.β
βThe remaining hair looks untidy.β
βI had perfect hair half an hour ago!β
βAnd now you require a practical solution.β
The call ended.
Daniel stared at his reflection.
The final strands across his crown detached and floated into the sink.
Executive Grooming
The barbershop stood directly opposite the office tower.
That alone told Daniel how often the firm used it.
A dark-haired barber named Marco greeted him beside an empty chair.
βMr. Jones?β
Daniel pointed at the ruined hair clinging to his scalp.
βThey sent you a photograph?β
βThey sent instructions.β
Marco showed him the appointment note.
HARRINGTON & BLYTHE EXECUTIVE FINISH Remove remaining hair. Smooth shave. No styling required.
Daniel looked toward the door.
He could still leave.
But he could not return to work with a patchy horseshoe and a few isolated strands plastered across his forehead. Even in his panic, he knew that.
Marco draped the striped cape around him.
βFirst time bald?β
βIβm not bald.β
Marco looked at his head in the mirror.
Daniel closed his eyes.
βI wasnβt bald this morning.β
The clippers switched on.
Marco began above Danielβs right ear, removing the remaining hair in a clean strip. Dark fragments scattered over the cape.
Daniel watched the thin ring disappear.
The transformation had already taken most of his hair, yet the deliberate removal of the remainder felt final. Each pass revealed more pale scalp until nothing but short, uneven stubble remained.
Marco brushed the loose clippings away.
βBetter already.β
βI look like my boss.β
βPerhaps that was the point.β
Warm foam spread across Danielβs head.
Marco unfolded a straight razor.
The blade moved from Danielβs forehead toward the crown, scraping away the last shadow of hair. Daniel watched the scalp become completely smooth section by section.
When Marco finished, he wiped the head clean and applied a small amount of lotion.
The overhead lights reflected from the bare dome.
Daniel touched it cautiously.
There was no stubble.
No texture.
Only smooth skin.
He looked older, heavier, and far more severe than the young associate who had entered Harringtonβs office.
Marco removed the cape.
βYou carry it well.β
Daniel stood, his enormous stomach pressing against the edge of the chair.
βThat is what everyone keeps saying instead of apologizing.β
The New Associate
Daniel went straight home.
He stood in his apartment doorway with both hands pressed against his bald head.
His boyfriend, Ryan, emerged from the kitchen.
βYouβre early.β
Then he stopped.
Daniel waited for the horror.
Ryan stared at the suit stretched across his enlarged body, the vast stomach, the round face, and finally the perfectly shaved scalp.
βDaniel?β
βItβs me.β
βWhat happened?β
βMy employer gave me a shake.β
Ryan blinked.
βThat sentence explained nothing.β
Daniel told him everything.
The meeting.
The drink.
The weight.
The hair loss.
The barbershop.
When he finished, Ryan remained silent for several seconds.
Then he approached.
Daniel stepped back.
βPlease donβt pretend itβs fine.β
βI wasnβt going to.β
Danielβs expression collapsed.
Ryan continued, βItβs obviously not fine. They altered your body without properly informing you.β
βOh.β
βBut that isnβt the same as saying you look terrible.β
Daniel gestured at himself.
βI look exactly like Harrington.β
βNot exactly.β
βIβm enormous.β
βYou are.β
βIβm completely bald.β
Ryanβs eyes moved toward the smooth scalp again.
βYou are.β
βAnd?β
Ryan tried to maintain a serious expression.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
βYou like it.β
βI am furious on your behalf.β
βYou like the bald head.β
βI can experience two emotions.β
Daniel stared at him.
Ryan stepped close and rested one hand gently on the bare crown.
Daniel shivered.
His boyfriendβs palm moved slowly across the smooth skin.
βYou really do like it,β Daniel said.
βA little.β
βThat is not a little expression.β
Ryan smiled despite himself.
βIβve never seen this much of your face before.β
βThat is because it used to have proportions.β
βYouβre still handsome.β
βI look forty-five.β
Ryan traced the curve above his ear.
βA handsome forty-five.β
Daniel sighed and leaned his heavy body against him.
Ryanβs arms could no longer reach fully around his waist.
βThat part may require adaptation,β Ryan admitted.
Monday Morning
Daniel seriously considered resigning.
Then he examined his contract.
The firm had paid for law school, and leaving before five years would trigger a debt larger than his mortgage. The integration clause also stated that termination would not reverse physical alterations.
He returned to work on Monday wearing a new suit.
His former clothes had not come close to fitting. The replacement navy jacket had been waiting at his apartment the next morning, accompanied by six white shirts and five identical green-striped ties.
When Daniel entered the office, several clients greeted him warmly for the first time.
One elderly banker shook his hand.
βNew man, Jones. You look as though youβve been doing this for twenty years.β
Daniel forced a smile.
βThat is approximately how I feel.β
Harrington summoned him at ten.
Daniel entered the same office.
This time, when he sat in the visitorβs chair, it creaked beneath both of them in almost identical ways.
Harrington looked him over.
The tailored suit.
The heavy stomach.
The smooth bald head.
βExcellent.β
Daniel folded his hands.
βI hate you.β
βThat feeling passes.β
βDid yours?β
Harrington glanced toward the old photograph on the shelf.
βNo.β
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
For the first time, the managing partnerβs expression softened.
βI was twenty-four.β
Daniel stared at him.
Harrington opened a hidden file on his computer and turned the screen around.
A photograph showed a slender young man with thick blond hair.
Daniel looked from the photograph to the enormous bald figure behind the desk.
βThat was you?β
βClass of 2001.β
βWhy did you stay?β
βDebt. Pride. Then promotions. Eventually, this became the only version of me anyone remembered.β
Daniel looked down at his own stomach.
βIs there a cure?β
βNot one the firm provides.β
βThen help me find one.β
Harrington studied him.
For years he had apparently passed the same transformation forward because that was what had been done to him.
Daniel expected refusal.
Instead, Harrington quietly closed the office door.
βThere may be a former chemist in Boston.β
Daniel leaned forward.
βMay be?β
βHe designed the original formula. He left after the partners rejected his reversal compound.β
βWhy would they reject it?β
Harrington rested one hand on his stomach.
βBecause men who can leave do not remain loyal.β
Fitting In
Months passed before Daniel and Harrington located the chemist.
During that time, Daniel discovered that the formula did more than alter appearances.
His appetite had increased dramatically. Salads no longer satisfied him. He craved heavy breakfasts, cream in his coffee, enormous lunches, and late-night takeout.
His body preserved its new size regardless of what he ate.
His hair never produced even a trace of stubble.
Every morning, Daniel woke beside Ryan and automatically ran one hand across his smooth scalp, still surprised to find nothing there.
Ryan grew increasingly fond of the ritual.
Sometimes Daniel caught him polishing the scalp with moisturizer before work.
βYou are enjoying my corporate trauma,β Daniel accused.
βIβm protecting company property.β
βI am not company property.β
βThen boyfriend property.β
βThat is not better.β
Yet Daniel leaned into the touch every time.
He also became unexpectedly close to Harrington.
Beneath the intimidating exterior, the managing partner was lonely, exhausted, and far less confident than Daniel had assumed. He had never spoken openly about being gay at the firm, despite spending twelve years with a man named Stephen.
One evening, Daniel found him alone in the office.
βYou told everyone Stephen was your housemate?β
βIt seemed safer when I started.β
βYou own the firm now.β
βHabits survive promotions.β
Daniel adjusted the tie lying over his own belly.
βPerhaps fitting in is overrated.β
Harrington looked at him for a long moment.
The following week, he brought Stephen to the company dinner and introduced him as his husband.
The Reversal
The chemist eventually offered Daniel a choice.
The reversal compound could restore his metabolism and permit gradual weight loss. It could not replace the destroyed hair follicles.
βYou can become lean again,β the chemist explained. βBut the baldness is permanent.β
Daniel touched his head.
Once, that would have devastated him.
Now he imagined Ryanβs disappointed expression and almost laughed.
Harrington stood beside him.
βAnd me?β
βAt your age, the reversal would carry significant risk.β
Harrington nodded as though he had expected that answer.
Daniel looked at the vial.
He thought of his old body.
The narrow waist.
The tailored suits.
The confidence he had mistaken for identity.
Then he thought of the months spent rebuilding himself, of Ryanβs hands on his scalp, and of the strange solidarity that had grown between two men transformed by the same institution.
βI want the metabolism corrected,β Daniel said. βBut slowly.β
The chemist frowned.
βYou do not want complete restoration?β
βI want control.β
That was the thing the firm had truly stolen.
Not his hair.
Not his figure.
His choice.
One Year Later
Daniel did not return entirely to his original shape.
He lost much of the forced weight, but deliberately stopped while still broad, soft, and substantially heavier than before. He had grown accustomed to his larger body, and Ryan openly adored it.
The bald head remained perfectly smooth.
Daniel now shaved it every few days even though almost nothing grew, enjoying the private ritual Marco had taught him.
Harrington changed the firmβs policies.
The integration formula was destroyed. The physical-presentation clause disappeared from every contract. New associates arrived in different suits, different sizes, and with as much hair as nature permitted them.
Harrington himself remained enormous and bald.
But Stephen began meeting him for lunch openly.
On the anniversary of Danielβs transformation, the two men sat together in Harringtonβs office.
A pair of coffee cups stood between them.
Daniel eyed his suspiciously.
βWhatβs in this?β
βBlack coffee.β
βNo cream?β
βNo proprietary compounds?β
Harrington took a sip from his own cup.
βNone.β
Daniel drank cautiously.
Nothing happened.
Harrington opened a folder.
βCongratulations, Mr. Jones. The partners have approved your promotion.β
Daniel looked at the document.
βAlready?β
βOur clients trust you.β
βBecause I appear settled?β
βNo.β
Harrington smiled faintly.
βBecause you were the first person here brave enough not to fit in.β
Daniel signed the papers.
That evening, Ryan waited for him outside the office. He ran an affectionate hand over Danielβs bald head before kissing him beneath the lobby lights.
Daniel no longer resembled the anxious young associate who had first entered the firm.
He was broader.
Bolder.
Still bald.
And finally recognizable to himself.
Hang around the barber shop long enough, youβre gonna get a haircut.
