You’ve waited patiently (or impatiently) for your dreads to grow.  They’re finally coming in nicely but you’re starting to have some thinning and breakage at the ends or in the middle of the loc shaft.Here are a few ways to help avoid it before it becomes irreversible.

1. Stop Twisting Too Often or Too Tight – This is one of the biggest contributors to breaking locs.  Our hair grows approximately half an inch every 4 weeks. Twisting along with this pattern is important.  Twisting bi-weekly or even more frequent will weaken the loc shaft as there will not be enough new growth to sustain the re-tightening and you will twist hair that has already been twisted.  Twisting every 4 to 6 weeks is often enough and is dependent on your hair growth.  It is also important to not over-twist the loc shaft.  If your locs are twisted until they start looping around this is too much.  Not only will this cause weakening but can also damage the hair follicles resulting in permanent hair loss.

2. Wrap Them Up At Night – Something as simple as sleeping can contribute to weak, frail locs.  If your locs are shoulder length or longer you’re even more at risk for them getting tangled around your head and each other while you sleep.  Keeping them covered with a breathable scarf, sleep cap or wrap can help lessen the chance of them breaking.

3.Go Easy On Styles – Whether you like styling, prefer them for work or your stylist is just the most amazing, styling can significantly contribute to loc breakage.  Pulling your hair back in one too often, doing tight barrel rolls, poking with pins and constantly wrapping rods and rubberbands can weaken the loc shaft, pierce the locs or damage the hair.  Avoid styling as much as you can as this can cause long term loc damage especially when done too tight.

4. Lighten the Load – I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had clients come into the salon going bald because their hair is too heavy for their roots.  I understand they are attached to their hair and some would even rather go bald than take a couple inches off, but for me i prefer to maintain with trims once every two years. After your locs get to a certain length they may start getting too heavy for the roots to carry.  Don’t compare your hair or journey to someone elses.  Yes, someone may have longer hair and their roots are still strong but you can’t always do the same.  You can also try to keep it up in wraps to lesson the pulling on the roots.

6. Avoid Coloring – Colored dreadlocks are beautiful when done by a professional and maintained properly.  However, people seldom take great care of color treated hair. Even then, bleaching and lightening is very harsh on locs.  It can make them weak, pourus, dry and brittle all of which eventually lead to breakage.  Chemical cuts are also quite common.  This is when their is a noticeable breakage along the color line.

7.Eat Well – Maintaining a healthy balanced diet is key to hair health and strength.  A diet rich in protein, Biotin, Iron, Omega 3 and Vitamins A & C are key to hair health.  As we age and experience stress, menopause and other health related issues, it becomes even more important to maintain a healthy balanced diet or take supplements. So you want to maintain an active lifestyle and work out daily, but a sweaty scalp is becoming a huge problem.  Not only does it reek after a couple days but it also itches and having a dirty scalp with nail scratches from itching, is definitely a bad cocktail. Swimming / Water Sports / Beach Doing water sports with locs can be tricky.  Your hair gets heavy and it can absorb chlorine and sand and also become quite dry and brittle.  You can also get mold from having your hair damp over an extended period.  Locs is really not recommended if swimming is your thing but if you have free forms or on’t care much for constant maintenance or a manicured look then go for it! You can get a swim cap.  Yes, they do have swim caps big enough for most length locs now available.  Just bear in mind that your hair may not remain completely dry but at least it wont be completely saturated. Completely saturate your hair with water before entering a pool.  This way your hair will absorb far less chlorinated or salt water. Wash as soon as you get out the pool.  If you do this daily it will be hard for you to wash and moisturize everyday but your hair will eventually become dry and brittle in the long run.  Try to moisturize at least once per week.  It may also become discolored and take on a chemical induced blond-like color. Working Out (Yoga, Running, Gym, Cycling etc.) Having locs and working out daily may not be as difficult as it is for those who swim.  However it still has it’s challenges especially if you want to maintain a more manicured type of locs.  Here are a few You’ll have to wash often but if you can cut this down to every 5-8 days then that would be great.  Over washing your locs / dreadlocks can lead to a dry and itchy scalp and coarse brittle locs.  This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash either but washing everyday will become a problem in the long run.  In between washing you can also simply clean your scalp with a scalp cleanser like Lockology  Scalp Cleanser.  With scalp cleansers you can just use a washcloth to wipe between your locs to remove excess odors, oil and sweat, just do this in moderation as well. Don’t wear updo’s styles or tight ponytails if you work out daily.   A part from reducing the amount of air that flows through your scalp this can also promote mold and mildew.  If your hair gets wet or moist and remains wet for too long it can become moldy, which is a definite no-no.  You can wear loose ponytails or buns or use a fan or blow dryer on cool to dry your hair after working out. I’m not much of a fan of interlocking (personal choice) but if  you workout daily interlocking may just be the way to go.  If you need to wash often to remove sweat and odor then re-twisting may not make sense for you.  Palm rolling doesn’t hold up well if you have to shampoo your locs every couple days.  If you do decide to go the interlocking route, make sure it is done by an experienced professional who knows how to interlock without causing permanent damage to your hair follicles.  It should not be painful or ever done two tight. I am a Certified Personal Trainer through Equinox fitness. I specialize in training for strength, weight loss, and functional fitness. My journey started many years ago, but I wasn’t consistent. After I tore my Achilles in 2014, I vowed to lose weight & stay consistent, and then my addiction started.  I really enjoy working with all individuals that has goals and want a fresh start in fitness. Currently I focus on shredding, loosing body fat percentage, building more endurance, and staying healthy. Providing healthy lifestyles & creating confidence for myself and others is my passion.

What three tips would you give to a person interested in maintaining a healthy diet and workout routine during the holiday season?

- Find a way to work out, even if it’s simple jogging or HIIT activities in the home.
