The evening had actually been going surprisingly well, or at least Elijah had thought so. Conversation had flowed easier than he'd expected, dinner had been nice, and for the first time in a long while he'd started to believe maybe dating wasn't quite as terrifying as he'd built it up to be. Then, without warning, his date's phone buzzed. One glance at the screen and her entire expression crumpled. Within seconds she was crying so hard she could barely catch her breath, muttering something about her ex already moving on with someone new. Elijah had frozen completely. He'd offered a napkin, awkwardly pushed the basket of fries a little closer as if they might somehow help, and quietly assured her everything would be okay, but it quickly became obvious he was painfully out of his depth. His eyes darted around the bar in search of anything that resembled a lifeline before finally landing on someone he thought he recognized across the sea of people. Relief washed over his face almost instantly as he stood from the bar stool he had been occupying and carefully made his way over. "Oh, hey!" he said, a little too enthusiastically. "I w-wasn't expecting to see you here. Did you say you needed to speak to me about something? Something ov-over there? y-you know..?"

Stanley had escaped again. At this point, Kaito wasn't even partially surprised, even less impressed, only mildly inconvenienced as he stood beneath one of the trees lining the park with his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, squinting up at the tiny sugar glider happily perched on a branch far above his reach. Every attempt to coax him down had only encouraged Stanley to climb higher, and Kaito had long since accepted that chasing him would somehow make the situation worse. Letting out a quiet sigh, he pinched the bridge of his nose before noticing someone nearby had slowed, certain he looked foolish negotiating with a creature no bigger than his hand. "He's mine," Kaito admitted before they even had the chance to ask, letting out a frustrated sigh. "His name's Stanley. He likes to remind me every couple of weeks that he's capable of flight and that I'm significantly less capable of climbing trees." His gaze lifted back toward the smug little animal overhead before a dry laugh escaped him. "He'll come down eventually. Usually after he's decided I've suffered enough." There was a brief pause before he glanced back toward the other person, "You don't have to stick around. I'm sure watching me bargain with a sugar glider wasn't how you planned to spend your day."

Elijah hadn't planned on ending his night at the bar. After a day filled with missed deadlines, coffee runs, and a producer who seemed determined to remind him that interns sat firmly at the bottom of the food chain, he'd figured one quiet drink before heading home sounded well deserved. Unfortunately, quiet had left the building the moment the very drunk man beside him decided Elijah looked like someone worth talking to. The stranger wasn't dangerous by any means, just incredibly friendly and completely incapable of letting the conversation end. Every time Elijah thought he'd found an opening to politely excuse himself, another rambling story followed, bouncing between old college memories, his ex-wife, and an oddly passionate theory about why raccoons were smarter than most people. Elijah smiled, nodded, laughed when it seemed appropriate, and slowly felt himself sinking further into social exhaustion. His gaze wandered across the room until it landed on someone sitting nearby, and before he could lose his nerve, he quietly slipped off his stool and approached them with an apologetic smile. "Hi. I'm so sorry. This is probably the weirdest thing anyone's asked you tonight, but could you please pretend you know me for like two m-minutes? I-I'll owe you a drink. Two even."

Elijah Levine grew up as the only child of the Levine family, spending most of his childhood entertaining himself with an imagination far bigger than the backyard he called his own. Every afternoon became a new expedition. Armed with an old explorer’s vest, a toy compass, and whatever stuffed animals or neighborhood strays happened to be nearby, he’d pretend he was filming an episode of his own nature documentary. He would narrate every discovery to an invisible audience, convinced that one day people all over the world would want to hear the stories he had to tell.
As he got older, that fascination shifted from wildlife documentaries to journalism. He became captivated by reporters standing in the middle of unfolding history, whether they were covering elections, natural disasters, or breaking news halfway across the globe. Elijah admired their curiosity as much as their courage. They had the ability to ask questions others wouldn’t, uncover the truth, and give people a window into places they’d never see themselves. From then on, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to be the one holding the microphone, chasing the next story wherever it led.
Life outside those dreams wasn’t nearly as exciting. Elijah was an incredibly shy kid who often stumbled over his words whenever he became nervous. The more anxious he got, the stronger his stutter became, and unfortunately his classmates noticed. For years he endured relentless bullying, from being shoved into lockers and having his lunch ruined to becoming the target of cruel jokes simply because he struggled to speak under pressure. He spent much of his childhood trying to disappear into the background, believing that if he stayed quiet enough, maybe people would leave him alone.
They didn’t. By his junior year of high school, years of bottled-up frustration finally boiled over. During yet another confrontation, Elijah snapped and punched one of the boys hard enough to break his nose. And he kept on hitting the boy until he was a bloody pulp of a mess and left in a coma for a few months. It was the first and only fight he’d ever been in. Thankfully, by some miracle, charges were not pressed. The bullying stopped after that, but the memory never sat comfortably with him. Even now, he wishes things had ended differently, though a part of him knows standing up for himself was long overdue.
Despite everything, Elijah never let go of the dream he’d carried since he was a little boy. He threw himself into school, earned a degree in journalism, and applied for every reporting opportunity he could find. It wasn’t easy. Rejection became a familiar part of the process, but he refused to let it convince him to settle for anything else.
Six months ago, that persistence finally paid off. Elijah packed up his life and relocated to Rift Valley after landing an internship at the local news station. It’s hardly the glamorous career he imagined as a kid. Most days involve running errands, organizing equipment, answering phones, and somehow making enough coffee runs to keep half the newsroom functioning. He’s still waiting for someone to explain how carrying fifteen coffee orders is supposed to prepare him for investigative reporting, but he doesn’t complain. Every assignment, no matter how small, is another chance to prove he belongs there.
At thirty-five, Elijah is still chasing the dream that first took shape in his backyard all those years ago. He’s endlessly curious, quietly compassionate, and believes every person has a story worth telling. While others chase headlines for recognition, Elijah has always been more interested in the people behind them. He hopes that one day, when someone turns on the evening news, it’ll be his voice guiding them through the biggest stories in the world.

BACKGROUND:
depression tw
Kaito Suzuki was born in 1994 in a quiet coastal town in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, where the rhythm of the ocean and the gentle hum of small town life shaped his childhood. Raised by a fisherman and a schoolteacher, he inherited his father’s quiet resilience and his mother’s love for storytelling through music and poetry. His passion for composing began after discovering an old keyboard his mother had bought secondhand. What started as idle curiosity quickly became an obsession. While other kids spent afternoons on the beach, Kaito could often be found tucked away in his room, teaching himself melodies by ear and scribbling half finished songs into worn notebooks. Still, no matter how much he loved home, it always felt just a little too small for the dreams he carried.
At twenty one, Kaito packed a backpack, a handful of demo tracks, and far more determination than experience before moving to Seoul, South Korea. The city was overwhelming in every sense, but it was exactly where he wanted to be. He worked whatever jobs would pay the bills, from barista to delivery driver to studio assistant, while spending every spare moment chasing opportunities within the underground music scene. He introduced himself to anyone willing to listen, accepted every freelance project he could get his hands on, and slowly earned a reputation as someone who cared more about telling a story through music than chasing recognition. Little by little, those connections opened doors, eventually allowing him to compose for independent films and television projects.
At twenty five, Kaito attended a celebration for one of those projects and met someone who immediately felt familiar. They shared the same passion for music, understood the strange hours and creative frustrations that came with the industry, and somehow made everything feel lighter. For the first time in years, Kaito found himself imagining a future that extended beyond his next project. Believing it was finally safe, he came out to his family, convinced he had found something worth building a life around. He hadn’t.
When the relationship ended, it felt as though it had taken a piece of him along with it. The confidence he had fought so hard to build gave way to self doubt, and the inspiration that had once come so naturally became frustratingly difficult to find. Music transformed from an escape into something that reminded him of everything he had lost. Though he never completely walked away from composing, there were long stretches where he questioned whether he would ever create with the same passion again.
A longtime pen pal eventually convinced him that maybe what he needed was not another project, but another beginning. Their stories led him to Rift Valley, a town that seemed chaotic enough to make starting over feel almost normal. He has called it home for the past few years, quietly rebuilding both his career and himself one small step at a time.
These days, Kaito’s humor is dry, his walls are high, and trust does not come as easily as it once did. He has mastered the art of pretending not to care, usually hiding behind sarcasm before anyone has the chance to get too close. Beneath that guarded exterior, however, is the same man who fell in love with music all those years ago. He is kindhearted, deeply loyal, and always willing to say yes to an unexpected adventure. He is no longer searching for the person he used to be. Instead, he is simply trying to become someone he is proud to be.

Stanley:
Stanley is Kaito's sugar glider and, according to Kaito, the true owner of the apartment. Equal parts emotional support animal and tiny menace, Stanley spends most evenings perched on Kaito's shoulder while he works, occasionally "helping" by stealing pens, hiding guitar picks, or launching himself across the room with absolutely no warning. Despite his chaotic tendencies, Stanley has become something of a social icebreaker. It's hard for Kai to talk to people, something about it just overwhelms him, but Stanley always saves the day in way or another.
