thunderstorms were a sight to be had across the west. lightning strikes the plains, erupting the peace of everything. she used to watch the light dance behind the canvas of a tent. and now, she watches them from behind the bubbled glass of a home. a home that’s all but grown quiet now. without john, without uncle. with the somber presence of a boy who has grown up too fast --- and the looming presence of age old ghosts. she wakes every morning before anybody else. and she walks outside to stand in the same place. the same place she used to stand with john. and drink whiskey with wine, smoking cigarettes all afternoon. but now she’s alone, and there’s a rug to cover the blood. rain manages to seep through the holes in the roof, and mixes with the tears sprinkled across reddened cheeks. she’s been drinking. she’s been coughing too. and she’s tired. she’s always so goddamn tired. ❛ 𝑤𝑒’𝑙𝑙 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒, 𝑠𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑒. 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑡𝘩𝑖𝑛𝑔’𝑙𝑙 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒. 𝑠𝑜 𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑦𝑖𝑛’. ❜ the veil is thinner than it has ever been before. and with her arms crossed tightly over her chest, she looks through the rain to the barn across the field. wishing that the doors will one day open, and john will wipe the sweat from his brow. he’ll walk back over, always with that funny way of his, and he’ll kiss her cheek before heading back inside.
