I feel just a sorry for Amane's mother as I do for Amane herself. I'm not denying that she acted unacceptably and her murder was a logical outcome, but what did she go through? That was horrible. I've tried to piece the story together as coherently as I can. If I've made any mistakes, please correct me.

Amane's parents were adherents of a cult that recruited them when they were on the verge of bankruptcy. For them, faith became salvation: business recovered after conversion + the influence of the recruiters + in the case of Amane's mother, the influence of a beloved husband who had been brainwashed while in a depressive — if not suicidal — state (since by his own account he thought about death a lot). So, they could accept the prohibitions and punishments as something right and necessary. Don't underestimate the ability of cults to brainwash even seemingly the most rational and reasonable people.

Btw, it's interesting that the report states both parents punished Amane, but the MV portrays only the mother as cruel. We see the situation from Amane's perspective: her mother sinned + her father was often away, so he "disciplined" her less often, which is why his image remains positive. That's a completely natural reaction from a child to accumulated pain and resentment, once a "window" opens to direct it all at one specific person.

Btw x 2, since all medical practices are considered sinful, and according to the report Momose had already turned to the faith before their daughter was born, the mother most likely gave birth at home with God's help. I wouldn't wish that on any woman.

Amane's mother hid her illness not only because of the taboo on treatment but also out of fear of others' reactions. The kitten incident from the second MV showed that other believers were watching and would report, no matter who the culprit was. By that time, her husband had "reaching the heights of religious devotion". Even if the illness had "sobered" her up, she couldn't seek help. It would ruin the family's reputation and her husband would likely see it as betrayal. She chose to pray and endure. She became so weak that she could no longer keep the house in order (I suppose that's why the MV shows Momoses' apartment in such mess). She asked for help when she was already in critical condition. We all know how that ended.

This case terrifies me.

Digging through trash cans

OCs' concept that has been eating away at my brain these past few days:

Bellamy is the son of an oil company owner. He wants to do charity work or run his own network of animal shelters but under pressure from his father, he ends up studying economics and prepares to take over the family business as the sole heir. He's a nice guy who, behind the facade of a carefree and successful golden boy, suppresses mounting aggression and anxiety, which he eventually takes out on himself (or on his father, which always ends VERY badly).

Timmy is Bellamy's classmate and close friend. He's an orphan. He got in through a quota system but works like hell to pay rent and pass his exams despite corrupt professors. He's a tsundere and a geek. Before meeting Bellamy, he was bullied for his outward effeminacy and low status. Like his friend, he has plenty of inner demons.

Bellamy genuinely admires Timmy as someone who tries to solve problems on his own. Timmy, in turn, feels like a complete jerk because he's hiding the fact that Bellamy's dad has been sugar-daddying him for a long time. Rich bro is way too out of touch with reality, so he naively believes that an administrator's salary is enough to live a normal life on an elite private university campus.
