The W.I.V.E.S. was founded by a group of Brooklyn women in 1943 to support the overseas service of their spouses during World War II. Their initial focus was on urging Congress to amend the Soldier Voting Act to make it easier for members of the military stationed abroad to vote. The group’s work eventually included activities ranging from providing child care and working with the Red Cross to the publication of a newsletter entitled Mrs. Yank.
