Blake And Yang? Gay

I am Bi, but I headcanon Yang as a lesbian and Blake as a bisexual/pansexual. 

Ok, so I’m a linguistics major. And of course that means I’ve spent a lot of time over my first couple of years of study looking at how people communicate and performing conversational analysis of various types. I’m definitely not an expert as I’ve still not graduated and there will always be more to learn, but here are some of my thoughts on how certain parts of Blake and Yang’s dialogue were written and what it says about the way the audience is meant to perceive their relationship.

This goes pretty deep with the analysis, so keep in mind that I’m not suggesting everything I talk about here is 100% fact or completely intentional on the writers’ part. I’m just offering some thoughts as someone who has had to learn how to look for every ounce of meaning in conversations, so you can take whatever you want from this, or not read it at all if that isn’t your thing 😄

This also got kind of (read: very) long so I’ve actually divided it into a series of three or maybe four posts instead of body slamming y'all with too much of a wall of text. I’ll probably release the remaining parts over the coming week or so. Anyway, here is the first section, and a quick shout out to @technicallyblakebelladonna since you asked me to tag you when this was done 😉

Blake hears Adam growl and instantly knows he’s about to fly off the handle because she’s been on the receiving end of his rage before. This is horrifyingly familiar territory for her and in that split second she knows exactly that Adam is going in for the kill. 

She knows it a whole second before Yang but Yang doesn’t know and she can’t move and there’s no time to tell her and it’s terrifying.

So I was rewatching and couldn’t help noticing another possible Bumbleby/Arkos parallel. Facing each other intimately… one person’s hand on the other’s cheek… one person’s hand on the other’s chest/shoulder…

You literally cannot remove Blake and Yang’s joint arc from the show without fundamentally changing the entire storyline in significant ways. Which makes it feel kind of ridiculous and laughable to me that anyone would still claim that their relationship doesn’t have much development, or that their interactions aren’t that important.

Meanwhile, hella valid as Blacks*n is, you could easily remove Sun and his interactions with Blake from the show and nothing notable would change. Blake’s parents could just as easily have been the people to help Blake realise that she needs to stop blaming herself for everything and let her friends in.

During the Fall of Beacon Sun was standing right there when they hear Blake’s missing, and he could so easily have gone after Blake and faced Adam, her canonical ex, and Adam could have referred to him as someone Blake loved instead of as a classmate as happens in V5, but he didn’t.

Yang filled that role of being identified as someone Blake loves, and Sun was the one who Adam called Blake’s classmate while Yang got him screaming “What does she even see in you?!” in her face.
