But now, his whole life has been for nothing. There is no homo….there is only Australopithecus.

I'm so frustrated with people who misunderstand this scene or claim that Rogue "cheated" on Gambit. She did not. They did not have anything going on. Gambit loves Rogue so much that he several times (in TAS) told her that just a word from her and he'd drop anything and everything. He truly does not care about the fact that they might never touch (thus the "Some things be deeper than skin" line). Rogue on the other hand has extreme trauma related to her powers. Her first kiss putting her teenage love in a coma. Being abandoned by her family for being a mutant. Mystique manipulating her (and yes, Mystique loved her in her own effed up way but that does not excuse it). Add to all this the fact that she almost killed Carol Danvers and absorbed so much of her that she gained her abilities permanently, and she basically had a mental breakdown from absorbing her memories and emotions to the point that she ran away from Mystique and asked for help from Xavier and the X-Men. But she YEARNS for touch. She yearns for what Jean and Scott has. She wants it so badly that when a person comes around who she can touch? She almost doesn't care who she is. And yes, there is an age gap, an extreme power imbalance, even if Magneto does genuinely care for Rogue, truly. But Rogue realizes that she can never have that with Gambit, even though she wants to. She tells Gambit that for her, a relationship where she cannot touch him is not enough, even if it was enough for Gambit. And Gambit says that he's not going to be around as a "maybe" so they should move forward as friends. BOTH of these are healthy boundaries that simply clash. None of them are wrong, or evil. They actually had an adult conversation about a very emotional and hard topic. Add to this the fact that in the end, Rogue did choose Gambit or at the very least, did not choose Magneto as she realized that Gambit is right, and maybe love, even without touch, is enough.
