That used to make me sad until she explained herself: The world is so much harder for girls than it is for boys. She was terrified of what a daughter might have to experience. She knew she wouldn't be able to protect me from everything out there, from the misogyny, gross societal body shaming, the rapists, etc.

My parents gave me a strong name, hoping that I would become a tough, independent woman who wouldn't let the world hold her back. They taught me the proper names for body parts. They taught me the behaviors of men to watch out for. They taught me to be smart and strong.
