slightly furious reminder that fish do in fact feel pain and do in fact experience fear and distress when in pain since people seem to love spreading the myth that fish don't feel pain. what is it with people assuming a creature is incapable of feeling pain or emotion just because it doesn't have complex facial muscles. come on gang
As my main income, I work with fish in a specialty pet store that's privately owned (so I'm allowed to say no and be stern to customers when it's needed).
You learn really quickly that not only do fish have individual personalities and emotions but they also have memories and recognize people! There are certain fish who will only come out for me and hide for everyone else. The pufferfish spits at me because she gets pissy that I haven't fed her. The flowerhorn bites everyone but me and my coworker when we clean his tank. I trained a fire eel to come up and eat directly out of my hand.
Fish are beautiful complex creatures and I thank the universe everyday that I get to work in a place where I'm encouraged to tell animal abusers to fuck right off.
I've had a fight about this before on Twitter. People insisting that the fish that had barbecue sauce poured directly into its mouth is fine, or that it can't feel pain anyway, and that it's "just a fish." I am very attached to fish, and the times when my bettas (japanese fighting fish) died, I felt severe grief. They all had their own personalities. They all came to the front of the tank, eyeing me carefully, curiously, and they were all beloved. There was sentience in those beady eyes, understanding. Maybe they cannot love like mammals, maybe they cannot express the same sort of friendship that people tend to value in dogs, but they are living beings who process and understand.

as therian who lives with reality variance i think we’d get along better intracommunally if we viewed different responses to reality variance / unreality / delusion /etc in the neutral way we view other neurodivergent needs that incidentally conflict
like for example, some NDs need to stim by making loud noises— but other NDs might be triggered by the volume, and prefer to decompress in a quiet space. NDs who need to stim loud aren’t intentionally trying to set off NDs who need the quiet—and NDs who need the quiet aren’t intentionally trying to suppress NDs who need to stim loud.
neither are “wrong” for having conflicting needs. both are still equally ND and deserving of shared community, but it’s also not wrong if one person needs to leave the room a moment so both people can have the stims they need.
i don’t have anything against alterhumans who need consensus reality bc they need consensus reality in the same way i need reality variance. what i DO have a problem with is when alterhumans who need consensus reality force that ideal onto everyone else, and demand alterhumans who need reality variance be silenced and driven out of community just for expressing different needs and experiences.
some of those needs are genuinely the need to not be “reality checked” ! bc unless you’re a trusted confidant (and, being a stranger on the internet, you are not) a reality check won’t do anything to change that person’s mind. and this is true for trying to change anyone’s beliefs, inside or outside the community, whether they’re clinically (self-)labeled or not
