My Pogo Connect just died so I can't finish this pic but here's the progress of it for those that are interested. I have a nerd man-crush on Neil Gaiman and his Death character and can never resist drawing her. 

It starts with a sketch (doesn't it always?) of blue pencil. This is non-repro blue so when you scan it the lines vanish. It's an old habit I have from long ago. Next a pencil line over the blue line to define some elements like the eyes and cross. Next up is a single line (no weight) to outline the elements. Death's hair is pretty messy (when you're dead it's hard to get a good hairdresser) so just a few scribbles to rough it out. Next I use a thick marker to block out the blacks. This could also be done with a brush and ink but it's just to do the fills and get a sense for weight. The final image is the next step where I clean up the edges and start on the details like around her eyes, her tattoo, lips, etc. Once I get my pen fixed I'll finish it with more details, shading, more weighted lines around the edge and all that jazz.
