Gordon saying “fix your hearts or die” also works as a description of the Black Lodge; “It is said that if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.” The dweller on the threshold describes monsters like the doppelgängers or Bob himself, but it is also crucially a confrontation with difference, exposing fragility within those who cross. This fragility is located in the “heart” or the “soul”, the centre where “imperfect courage” and empathy are located. While Gordon’s “Fix” means repair, it retains that meaning of composing oneself, arranging oneself, sustaining integrity. This death, then, is a fragmentation like that embodied by the doppelgängers, or a collapse. Another way of mapping the confrontation with difference is Cohen’s Seven Theses of Monster which describe the threshold marked by monsters — the threshold of “difference” and “category crisis” which gates possibility. The final thesis goes "The Monster Stands At The Threshold... of Becoming." Like the confrontation with the dweller, this process of “fixing the heart” would trend towards expansion; transphobia is fatality and the heart that sustains it collapses and becomes inert.
