Love and War: Politics and Spirituality in Star Wars
As I followed the Star Wars saga closely last year, I couldnât help noticing that its central theme is not Good against Evil, but Love against War.
More precisely, it seems like a long parable about a mind at war: the galaxy far, far away keeps struggling with different powers which, until now, never were balanced by a common ideology.
 The Jedi: We Have No Personal Agenda (âŚdo we?)
As we get to know the Jedi in the prequels, we canât be but disappointed. The supposed keepers of peace, guardians of the Force, seem a bunch of elderly, stuck-up guys who are wary of anything coming from the outside. Their meetings take place in a place which even looks like an ivory tower.
We witness the first conflict in the saga in The Phantom Menace, which absurdly is kicked off by two weird-looking guys who seem interested in nothing but their economic power.
The irony is that in their own way, the Jedi do not seem more open-minded than them; though not interested in wealth, they do only think of themselves - of the status their rank as Jedi gives them. They are so convinced of being the âgood guysâ that they will not lift a finger to end the conflict even when itâs raging, and they donât care what will become of a weirdly powerful nine-year-old boy who just lost his only living relative, his past and the only home he ever knew.
It is PadmĂŠ, who is not a Jedi and has no power in the Force, who takes matters in their own hands, to the point where she falls on her knees before the Gungans asking them for their assistance.
I have repeatedly heard the Star Wars prequels being criticized due to the seeming lack of agenda of the protagonists. Which is right - they basically havenât. The only agenda everybody seems to have is to keep things the way they are so that their personal, comfortable situation wonât change.
But the truth is that they are not aware of the power pulling at them: there is someone who is the mastermind behind all that happens during Anakinâs youth, and we can assume that he was at work even before the boy stepped onto the stage.
It is Senator Palpatine who convinces the Queen of Naboo to plead for a vote of no confidence against Chancellor Valorum, which in the end leaves Palpatine himself in charge. It is he, again, who makes JarJar convince the Senate to give him emergency powers due to the surge of the Separatists.
Palpatine is repeatedly shown as being Evil incarnate. Absolute power is his ultimate goal. For him, it is all or nothing. There is nothing human about him, ever, as good as he is as posing as a mellifluous politician who only has the best ends in mind.
And on top of it, Palpatine makes it appear as if he only has the purest motives, leaving the dirty work to others: Anakin marches into the Jedi temple killing everyoneâŚ
âŚObi-Wan cripples Anakin mercilessly, which gives Palpatine the chance to strap him into the armor and mask that he will hence need in order to survive at all.
 The End of Everything We Loved
The name âDevilâ means âseparatorâ. Palpatineâs influence leads to separate all people who ought to belong together: friendsâŚ
 âŚhusband and wifeâŚÂ
âŚbrothers and sisters. When they first meet, Luke and Leia donât realize for a long time that they are, actually, siblings.
Vader doesnât recognize his own daughterâŚ
âŚnor his son: during the trench run we hear him say âThe Force is strong with that one.â
 The Jediâs failure
Enter Anakin, someone with huge personal agendas. Anakin has known slavery, the pain of separation from his mother, the helplessness having to watch her die, the fear of losing wife and unborn child in a similar way.
Does that make him an evil person? We see Anakin struggle against his fears and his violence for years. His deepest impulse is to use his enormous strength in order to protect others, but he isnât allowed to. He can only be active if the Jedi order him to, which leads among other things to the absurd situation of having to save Palpatine, i.e. evil incarnate, risking his own and Obi-Wanâs life; while he was supposed to toughen it out when his own mother, a woman who probably never harmed anyone in her life, was tortured to death.
Instinctively, Anakinâs heart always told him who needed his help. But this generosity and protectiveness never was appreciated by the Jedi, to whom âthe Codeâ came first of all.
But what is the Jedi code, looking at it, if not a strategy to detach themselves from the world?
No families of their own.
No possessions.
No close attachments.
How is anyone supposed to still see if someone is in pain, when he was trained from early childhood on to live in a metaphorical ivory tower?
Though not actually evil-minded (they assuredly do not want power or promote terror), the Jedi are in constant denial of the truth around them. They witness Palpatineâs ascent over and over and never realize that the most powerful Sith Lord of all is sitting a few meters away from them.
Because to the Jedi, âwhat canât be doesnât existâ. Palpatine may be a Sith, but officially, belongs to the Jedi. Count Dooku even warns Obi-Wan; the Jedi proves his denial again with his words âImpossible. The Jedi would have sensed it.â
So, not wanting it but also not knowing what they were doing, the Jedi enhanced the conflict. And the Skywalker family, whose founder had been fathered by the Force itself, was torn and kept apart from both Jedi and Sith.
Now we could argue: who would want to cooperate with the Sith, to have them as part of a balance, if they are evil and never do any good?
Do they, and do the Jedi only do good and virtuous deeds?
Obi-Wan told Luke an outright lie pretending that Vader had been Anakinâs killer; convinced that it could end only if the son killed the father.
The supposedly evil Lord Vader is the one who finally tells the truth: he proclaims to be Lukeâs father, which also unveils his old masterâs lie. Luke is traumatized because the truth is the opposite of what he believed. Until this very moment he was in denial, convinced that he was dealing with his fatherâs killer; Vader had literally to cut off his sonâs hand in order to create a dramatic pause which finally allowed him to say what he wanted to: the truth.
To believe that a deed like patricide could be a positive thing only enhances the absurdity of the situation and the depth of the Jediâs denial. As Luke confronts Obi-Wan with his manipulation, the Jedi still does not take responsibility, beyond his grave.
The Mistake: Making Things About Oneself
So, we have seen that Evil is not always wrong and Good not always right. They are strangely connected by one common, capital fault: making things about themselves.
But we repeatedly meet people who are mature enough not to make things about themselves: PadmĂŠ, Shmi, Senator Organa, (dare I say it? even JarJar), Owen and Beru.
Lukeâs meeting with Vader on Bespine is pivotal because confronted with the words âYou are not a Jedi yetâ Luke draws his weapon first, proving Vader right. He hates the man in whom he still sees his fatherâs killer. It is this hatred which could have pushed him to the Dark Side. Though unknowingly and acting out of possessiveness, Vader pushed his son away from the Dark Side by saying the truth and thus crushing Lukeâs hatred for him.
As he tries to save his friends, we see that Luke has learned his lesson: he tries to convince Jabba diplomatically and draws his weapon only at the last moment.
Terrified that Vader and Palpatine might be after his sister, Luke lashes out one last time. Only when he sees his fatherâs robotic hand he realizes the trap he was about to fall into.
Forgiveness and love bring Vader down. Compassion has won. Peace ensues, the family is united.
But many years later, we see Luke fail making things about himself again: he fears the danger his nephew could become for everything he loves.
His moment of panic pushes his nephew to the dark side. As a long-term consequence, the young man will be the murderer of the man who used to be Lukeâs best friend.
Ben adopts another name and joins Snoke; war flares up and pushes itself between the members of the Skywalker family again.
Han and Leia meet after a period of separation, each bemoaning the loss of their son.
Luke, guilt-stricken, has retired to a lonely island, away from everybody else.
Only shortly before his death, Luke tries to reconnect: with his sister, his brother-in-law (symbolically through the dice), the droids, his nephew. The Skywalker family is getting closer again, hinting at a future peace.
 Conclusions
The absurd situation of this generation is that at the opposite ends of the conflict are two persons who despite their outward differences couldnât be more alike. Kylo and Rey both are lost children, desperately searching for belonging and purpose. In the brief moment of their alliance against Snoke we can see that working together, Dark and Light side are indeed invincible.
So, must the Light Side win again in order to ensure peace?
The Dark Side is the human Id, which is all about oneself. Its advantage is that being straightforward, the Id canât lie. Anakin / Vader always told the truth, as painful as it was.
The Id is aware of the fact that it needs its other half to be balanced. Hence, the âbad guysâ always struggle to dominate, possess and at worst kill the âgood guysâ. We constantly see a powerful Dark Side user (Vader, Kylo) being at his strongest while he is chasing his Light Side counterpart (Luke, Rey).
The Light Side is the Super-Ego, the conscience, which at its extreme might push a person to give up his life for someone else. The disadvantage is its tendency to deny that it needs its other half also; to believe to be solely in the right. The Jedi (including Luke, the last and the strongest of them) often overlook vital truths because none are so blind as those who will not see.
Both Luke and Rey needed their Dark Side counterparts to confront them with the truth (âI am your fatherâ, âYour parents are dead⌠filthy junk traders who sold you for drinking moneyâ). As much as it hurts them, both need to know these truths because their false pretensions held them back from being who they truly were.
That is why âbalanceâ is so vitally important and the only thing that can save the day and make lasting peace. Because no one can pretend that he lives solely for others (the Jedi), and no one can exist long living only by himself and for himself (the Sith). Only acknowledging one anotherâs positive sides and learning to cooperate, the Force users can make lasting peace in the galaxy possible. Only when a common ground comes at last, the galaxy will finally be free of the Old Republicâs stagnation, the Empireâs tyranny and the turmoil of the Rebellion.
Peace, at last, to the people of good will.

1 cup Borax (not Boric Acid. Also a different thing.)
½ cup - 1 cup grated bar soap (you can use literally anything. I often use Ivory because itâs easy to get and I find it works well, a lot of people like Fels-Naptha, which is an actual laundry bar. Some people use Dr. Bronnerâs. Really does not fucking matter.) After grating your soap, combine all ingredients. Thatâs it. Thatâs the whole thing. Use maybe a Âź cup per load.

Step one: acquire $5 bag of baking soda from Costco.
Step two: lay that motherfucking baking soda out on a baking tray.
Step three: bake the baking soda on a tray in an oven at 400° for 1 hour (to make the moisture evaporate, leaving washing soda)
Step four: revel in how easy and cheap it is to make your own washing soda, and maybe take a moment to be angry that the industry upcharges the fuck out of something that is so easy to make.
I see some of y'all complaining about static and/or wanting nice smelling laundry. Go to a craft store, find 100% wool yarn balls. If it doesnât come in a ball, ask an employee to make it into a tight ball for you. Wash in the washing machine to make it felted. Remove from washer, add a few drops of essential oil to the ball, allow to seep in. Dry with clothing. Doesnât need to be rewashed ever, and if it stops smelling, add few more drops of essential oil. Bam, reusable dryer sheets.

How Stevie Wonder Helped Create Martin Luther King Day
On the evening of April 4, 1968, teen music sensation Stevie Wonder was dozing off in the back of a car on his way home to Detroit from the Michigan School for the Blind, when the news crackled over the radio: Martin Luther King Jr. had just been assassinated in Memphis. His driver quickly turned off the radio and they drove on in silence and shock, tears streaming down Wonderâs face.
Five days later, Wonder flew to Atlanta for the slain civil rights heroâs funeral, as riots erupted in several cities, the country still reeling. He joined Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Eartha Kitt, Diana Ross and a long list of politicians and pastors who mourned King, prayed for a nation in which all men are created equal and vowed to continue the fight for freedom.
Wonder was still in shockâhe remembered how, when he was five, he first heard about King as he listened to coverage of the Montgomery bus boycott on the radio. âI asked, âWhy donât they like colored people? Whatâs the difference?â I still canât see the difference.â As a young teenager, when Wonder was performing with the Motown Revue in Alabama, he experienced first-hand the evils of segregationâhe remembers someone shooting at their tour bus, just missing the gas tank. When he was 15, Wonder finally met King, shaking his hand at a freedom rally in Chicago.
At the funeral, Wonder was joined by his local representative, young African-American Congressman John Conyers, who had just introduced a bill to honor Kingâs legacy by making his birthday a national holiday. Thus began an epic crusade, led by Wonder and some of the biggest names in musicâfrom Bob Marley to Michael Jacksonâto create Martin Luther King Day.
To overcome the resistance of conservative politicians, including President Reagan and many of his fellow citizens, Wonder put his career on hold, led rallies from coast to coast and galvanized millions of Americans with his passion and integrity.
But it took 15 years.
In the immediate wake of Kingâs death, the political establishment was more concerned with keeping things calm, tamping down unrest, and arresting rioters and activists. It was a violent yearâthat summer the Democratic convention in Chicago exploded in chaos and another inspiring leader, Robert F. Kennedy, was killed by an assassin. The country seemed on the verge of civil war.
Conyersâ bill languished in Congress for over a decade, through years of anti-war protests, Watergate and political corruption, stifled by inertia and malaise at the end of the 1970s. The dream was kept alive by labor unions, who viewed King as a working-class hero, with protests that slowly built up steam. At a General Motors plant in New York, a small group of auto workers refused to work on Kingâs birthday in 1969, and thousands of hospital workers in New York City went on strike until managers agreed to a paid holiday on the birthday. Kingâs widow, Coretta Scott King, led a birthday rally that year in Atlanta, where she was joined by Conyers and union leaders. By 1973, some of the countryâs largest unions, including the AFSCME and the United Autoworkers, made the paid holiday a regular demand in their contract negotiations.
Finally in 1979, President Jimmy Carter, who had been elected with the support of the unions, endorsed the bill to create the holiday. Carter made an emotional appearance at Kingâs old church, Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. But Congress refused to budge, led by conservative Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, who denounced King as a lawbreaker who had been manipulated by Communists. The situation looked bleak.
By then, Wonder had matured from a young harmonica-playing sensation to a chart-topping music genius lauded for his complex rhythms and socially-conscious lyrics about racism, black liberation, love and unity. He had kept in touch with Coretta Scott King, regularly performing at rallies to push for the holiday. He told a cheering crowd in Atlanta in the summer of 1979, âIf we cannot celebrate a man who died for love, then how can we say we believe in it? It is up to me and you.â
Years earlier, Wonder had composed âHappy Birthday,â a song celebrating Kingâs life, dedicating the song and his next album to the cause. Originally he was going to record himself singing the traditional song to King but Wonder didnât know the music, so he âwrote the hook for a different âHappy Birthday,ââ remembers producer Malcolm Cecil. He held onto it until âthe movement for the holiday was gaining steam,â and made it the centerpiece of his next album, Hotter Than July. The recordâs sleeve design featured a large photograph of King with a passage urging fans to support the holiday bill: âWe still have a long road to travel until we reach the world that was his dream. We in the United States must not forget either his supreme sacrifice or that dream.â
That summer, Wonder called Coretta Scott King, telling her, âI had a dream about this song. And I imagined in this dream I was doing this song. We were marchingâwith petition signs to make for Dr. Kingâs birthday to become a national holiday.â
King was touched but she didnât have much hope, telling Wonder, âI wish you luck, you know. Weâre in a time where I donât think itâs going to happen.â

For many slave rebellions the enlistment of house negroes was instrumental (slipping poison in or leaving the door open) so I question if the alienation of this New Black class through aggressive call outs is useful. Iâm not talking bout protecting their hurt feelings here, as much as Iâm talking about priming these New Blacks to access their resources. What is the role of the subversive Black elite in corporate America? What is the role of the decolonized house negro? And how do we enlist more?
If you study the Slave Rebellions in the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean, it documents of the treason of the House Slaves, the cooperation between the House Slaves and the White Enslavavers, of House Slaves betraying the Field Slaves.  There is very little evidence of House Slave infiltration of the House to support the Field Slave Rebellions. I wish there was a strong history of Field Slave and House Slave cooperation, but the record shows that these groups were more often hostile to each other than allied against Enslavers. Also poisoning of a Slave Masters was more of a personal act and would do little to end or even disrupt the larger systems of Chattel Slavery, no different than poisoning an individual CEO or Elite Politician would do today.  The Slave Revolts were about destroying the property, the crops, the resources of the Enslavers, about confronting and destroying the Institutions, not just killing Individuals.  The Masters often fled and poor Whites, White workers, and working-class White Soldiers were tasked with putting down Rebellions, not the White Elites; just like the White Elites donât do their own dirty work today. So, the Blacks who were able to carve out special status within the Oppressorâs System in the past are not different than the âRich Niggasâ today, they identify with the Systems and Institutions of the Oppressor more than they do with the plight of the Black Masses.  They tried to encourage the Black Masses to submit back then just like they do today, telling us that work, hope, and a little luck will bring us all the comforts that the Whites enjoy, as long as we donât stir up trouble and we are willing to leave the Black Masses in the dust as we individually elevate.  The House Slaves would throw out crumbs and rags to the Field Slaves in order to carry favor and influence over the Field Slaves, but not to lead them to Liberation, but to convince them to work harder for Massa, just like Jay Z, Will Smith, the Obamas will throw us crumbs, do some charity, pays for some scholarships for the same reason. Â
The only way to get Black Elites to be assets to the Black Masses, to get them to contribute their talents and resources to Blacks and stand against our Oppressors is for the Black Masses to position ourselves to impose real and immediate consequences and/or rewards on them; nothing else. We canât expect them to do it based on the goodness of their hearts, or out of Racial Loyalty.Â
The Black Elites need to fear angering the Black Masses more than alienating White Elites, and we are in a position to do that, but we are indoctrinated to worship the Black Elites instead of controlling and directing them; so the real work rest in awakening and organizing the Black Masses, not in âprimingâ Rich Niggas.  Rich Niggas and their money is outta play until Black Revolutionaries have organized enough to coerce them to do the right thing OR Else. âPower cedes nothing without a Demand,â not even Black Economic Power. Until then the Black Elites in Industry, Entertainment, Academia, and Government will sell us out for personal gain with impunity while giving lip-service and crumbs to our struggles. We need Black People Power, Black Revolutionary Organization, and Black Institutional Discipline, not Rich Nigga Sympathy and Money. Sorry, it has to be that way, but if you look at other Revolutions from the Bolsheviks to the American Revolution, to the various Third World Revolutions, youâll see that they all went to their Elites and said; âyour money or your life,â and they had the will and means to carry that out.The moment we can organize a cadre of organized and disciplined Black Revolutionaries we can go to the Rich Niggas and tell them how to move, where to put their resources, and that their White Masters canât protect themâŚbut we can; weâll have thier support.  If you are not Class Conscious, you are Not Conscious, you are a liability to tghe Struggle no matter how noble your intentions.Â
