cooper twirls the cigarette between his fingertips as he leans against the wall of the alleyway next to the club he had just exited. he didn't really smoke anymore, but he liked keeping some on hand in case he needed them. the click of their heels fill the alleyway and cooper gives himself a few second before he looks up at her. they had given the other one looks all night, even though they swore two weeks ago they never wanted to see the other one again. but they were like magnets, it was hard to keep them apart. cooper looked at his watch "only took you two minutes to come out. that's gotta be some new record."

Clara was usually smarter than this . . . she was a headstrong, decisive, she knew what she did and did not want for herself. She knew how to quit most things. Him and cigarettes were the exception, though she'd blame the latter as each step brought her closer, narrowed gaze settling on him perched smugly against the brick wall. "Don't get too excited," the blonde cut in quickly, reaching for the cigarette in his hand. She didn't hesitate to bring it to her lips, taking a drag as she stepped back. It had been only a couple of weeks since they'd called it quits, again—words she regretted echoed in the back of her mind—but she didn't intend to apologize for a single one. There was something about Cooper that had always gotten to her. Passion, her brother called it, but she couldn't bring herself to agree. Didn't want to admit it. "It's a little crowded in there," she added around the cigarette, ignoring the bite of cold air drifting through the alley, her mini skirt and tank top doing little to keep her warm. And she kept her distance, even if she couldn't seem to pull her eyes off him now that they were alone. Even as everything in her yearned to be closer, to have his hands on her again. "Noticed you staring an awful lot tonight . . . do I look extra good, or do you miss me or something?"

cool air bit at romy's cheeks as she made her way out of the building, stepping out onto the empty balcony as the rest of the world melted away. she held on tightly to the double short of vodka on ice she'd ordered at the bar before stepping away, trying to escape from the strange feelings swirling in her gut for the last hour and a half. from the moment she'd seen a certain someone, in fact. lifting the glass to her lips, she cringed as she threw her head back, making the split decision to swallow the whole thing so that she could try and drown out the memory of the eye contact they'd shared in the worst possible moment only a few weeks prior. of course, as she spun around to find somewhere to abandon the now empty glass, she once again made eye contact with the very person she'd been trying to avoid. "...hi."

it was strange to think the two of them had once been best friends . . . and now? it felt like they were two strangers. forced apart by circumstances out of their control, and none of it sat right with stella. which was why she'd finally gotten the guts to talk to her those weeks ago—a thought soon forgotten after barging in on romy in a compromising position. an image burned into her brain, nestled deep in the pit of her stomach, and she'd spent this entire night trying not to think about it. but her cheeks burned with that first glance across the room, and they were once again. standing at the edge of the balcony, a glass of wine she'd been nursing for twenty minutes in one hand, and wide eyes landed right on romy as soon as she ventured out. seemingly with no idea she was there, and she would have kept it that way if the blonde wasn't whipping around to face her before she could turn away. "oh - hi," stella breathed, nervous, free hand smoothing out any nonexistent wrinkles in her dress. she looked pristine as always, from head to toe, not a hair out of place and yet, it was romy she was admiring. basking in the beauty she should have been used to after all these years, but she never could help that glint in her eyes. "sorry, i should have said something when you walked out here, i just . . . " apologizing for existing in the wrong place at the wrong time, a smile attempting to tug at her lips, though it falters. " . . . i needed air." and somewhere to breathe without the thought of you overpowering everything.
