Then on our way home… disaster! It was leaking a little bit oil before we were about to leave back home, I refill some and we got on our way. After only a short drive it stopped for me, and I pull it over to the first bus stop. When I got out and saw what happened I quickly realized I was not getting home with the westy today. It turned out one of the casting plug’s they put into the block was popped out and gone, this opened up straight into a oil channel and the crankshaft and bearings was broken.

One of several trips during the summer of 2013 went to Hvaler near Fredrikstad. I brought my son and went there with Vidar and a friend of his who had a Classic Volvo. The weather was magnificent. We did some fishing and enjoyed our selves for a weeken. It’s brilliant. Little did we know what was about to happen..

Every spring start with two meets we normally go to. The first one is VW til 1000 in Ski centrum, the other one is one of my favorites. The VW and Porsche 356 club hosting in the Norwegian folk museum in Bygdøy. If The weather is good like in 2013 there can be some truly awesome cars coming there. And my god you drool looking at many of them.

Meanwhile the beetle got a new engine installed, with good help from my friend Bjarne.

The 2013 season started may 1st, Its normal That people bring out their classic car this day and drive around. It was quite a few cars joining this time around the nearby lake.

In the autumn of 2012 I parted with my first VW. it was a bit emotional, but my preference had changed and I had both the 53 beetle and the westy now.

The westy won 2nd price for the nicest cars on the Bønder In Bugs meet 2012. I was quite shocked and did not expect that.

Scandinavia’s biggest classic VW event

First time to overnight in SCC was back in 2012. Just a few days earlier under very random circumstances I had met another good friend of mine. Deano. It was a nice summer day and I’m out driving and there, parked near the lake was a similar westy like mine. I was a bit shocked really. I stopped of course and had a look around it, and also noted down the license plates and search it up. I got in talks with the owner through facebook and already one week later we camp together in SCC. One Thing I never will forget was when Vidar joined us the one day and we’re walking between the three Westy’s and point out what the one has that the other one didn’t and so on 😂

My first overnight meet was VW Internationals in Fredrikstad. We were a small group that went together. This was the first and so far the only time I brought the original Westfalia circus style tent that came with the Westy. No doubt they are super cool, but it takes up much space in the bus.

In the beginning I wasn’t really interested in VW bus. I don’t know why, guess I just never noticed them in the same way as beetles. My friend Vidar who’s Westfalia bus I saw for the first time on may 17th (Norway’s National day) one year in the village we live.. must have been 2010 or maybe 2011.. We later met at a local VW meet and got in talks. Turned out we lived only few hundred meters from each other. Gradually I started to like the idea of a bus, and especially the Westfalia. It was something about the looks of it, and the practicality. And then in 2012 I found one for sale, they didn’t come out often so I knew I had to react quickly if I wanted it. In june Vidar joined me to Kristiansand by train to pick it up.

There was quite some work with this, the history shows that it was sold first time in Oslo. Later it was sold to Averøy near Molde. In Norway it wasn’t open sale of cars until autumn of 1960, which meant that you needed permission and a special reason to buy a car. Like if you were a doctor. This beetle had been sitting in a barn for many years, and it hadn’t been registered since 1975. It had seen some restoration at some point.

It’s interesting how you change about certain things in life, and especially in a hobby you care a lot about. I think for me it’s safe to say that VW’s have been all consuming at periods. I think this is something that grow inside you. As you start to go to meet’s, get to know other people, see what they have, learn what is rare and such you want it right? At least I do.. At some point my mind was set on a split beetle. I looked at them everywhere I went for meets, and ofc. I started to search the ads again. Just before Christmas 2011 I found this. 1953 1200 (zwitter) my good friend Vidar came with me to pick it up near Molde. This was in January, on icy roads. You can see the icing on the wind screen as we came back down from the mountain in the evening.
