10. I am stuck between being an adult and knowing I will never be able to go to the doctor’s office alone or sign my name on documents without wondering if I look like an oversized six year old. 9. I’ve fallen in love too many times. I have had my heart ripped through my chest, stepped on, and set on fire until only ashes remain, but the heart is a muscle the size of a fist and that is what gives me the strength to get up and fight another morning. 8. I am a writer. It’s been a while since I’ve placed ink on paper but the journals in my mind are overflowing with phrases and words that are begging to escape. There is a saying that poets break their own hearts just to have something to write about and I will never be able to string the right words together to emphasize the amount of truth in that. 7. I don’t let go of my past. My mind is filled with “Careful: Wet Concrete” signs and somehow every person that I have met has walked into my mind and ignored all the signs leaving me with thousands of memories, words, and promises that will be engraved in the folds of my brain for the rest of my life. 6. I remember being only seven when my depression first hit. I remember being ten and waking up with swollen eyes for weeks on end from the the tears that could not seem to stop falling. It’s been years and I still can’t hit one AM without feeling the familiar blanket of sadness wrap itself around my bones. 5. I have felt pain. I have not seen my mother die or my dad beg on the street but my skin has seen self inflicted slashes of red that seem to penetrate my soul, and I’ve seen my best friend wither into nothing, and I’ve seen the world lose interest in itself. 4. I’ve exchanged secrets with both genders. The type of secrets that involve soft moans and tongues and curious fingertips, but I’ve never found someone who makes me feel complete. 3. I often fall asleep massaging my own shoulders or holding my own hand. I’ve found that my own fingers on my skin feel more gratifying than a stranger’s greedy three AM mouth quietly whispering that they love me in the backseat of a car. 2. I’ve always longed to leave my hometown but as the time when I will finally be able to gets closer, my toes have began curling into the dirt below me attempting to anchor me here. This is my home and the only place I’ve ever known but it has gotten to a point where I cannot turn my head without landing on the remains of my past. 1. I’ve been told I would go far and I’ve been told I never would. I will pick the pieces of my heart up and I will bury my old habits. I know nothing but the fact that I am but dust and blood and bones but years ago I promised I would somehow find the will to pick these dusty bones up and move forward and that is exactly what I am doing.
