Less than a year after The Phantom Menace and Obi-Wan and Anakin get their first off-world mission. So they go out to this planet and it’s this beautiful, colorful jungle and Anakin is just in awe of it all. He can’t stop smiling and excitedly fast talking about everything and for the first time since Qui-Gon died Obi-Wan finally feels like he has a handle on things and he can’t stop feeling so proud at his padawan. They sit beside the fire that night talking and Anakin finally really opens up to him. It heals something in Obi-Wan.

But then Anakin wakes up sick. He’s feverish and has a weird rash and Obi-Wan tries to figure it out and he asks Anakin if he’s vaccinated for Jungle Fever and Anakin is like “what is a vaccine?” and Obi-Wan panics. He’s a poor, formerly-enslaved kid from the Outer Rim, of course he isn’t vaccinated. How did this not come up earlier? Obi-Wan spends the next few days in a perpetual cortisol spike carrying his barely-conscious padawan through the jungle back to their ship.

Finally, they reach the ship and Obi-Wan flies back to Coruscant like he’s trying to escape pirates. He takes Anakin back to the Halls of Healing and spends hours pacing in front of the examination room, his brain cycling through a rolodex of worst-case scenarios. Eventually, the Jedi Healer invites him in. The healer turns to Anakin and tells him to tell Obi-Wan what he just told them. Anakin just looks up at him and goes “I ate a colorful beetle.” Obi-Wan goes back to their quarters and stares at the wall for a couple hours.
