Chewing gum absorbed in the mouth is an improved delivery method due to the thinness of the oral mucosa and the capillary bed within it, according to Anastassov. Although CanChew gum has been on the market for about a year, AXIM Biotech acquired the patent from a Dutch company called Sanamad just last month. “The patent gives us an exclusive protection on the marijuana food market,” Anastassov told HIGH TIMES. “It’s important because there’s so many other products out there with different delivery systems.” Owning the patent means that another company attempting to introduce a rival product made with CBD, CBG, Hemp Oil, THC or marijuana plant extracts will result in legal consequences. “Any of these products would be infringing on our intellectual property,” Anastassov said. “If we notice anyone else producing such gum, we will pursue vigorous legal defense of our intellectual property.” CBD is among a series of at least 85 different cannabinoid compounds found in the marijuana plant. The most well-known among them is THC, which is what creates the psychoactive impact of smoking or eating pot. Each piece of CanChew gum contains 10 milligrams of pharmaceutical-grade CBD oil. Available for shipping in all 50 states online, the gum is considered a food rather than a medicine and, as a result, is not FDA approved. One pack contains 32 pieces and is priced at $125. “Expect all the benefits you’d received from CBD,” Anastassov said. With $1.2 million in sales, the gum was introduced on the market a year ago, and AXIM Biotech plans to aggressively promote the gum now that it owns the patent free and clear. “We are negotiating an advertising and sales campaign with Tri-Star products,” Anastassov said. Next on the list is a prescription chewing gum consisting of 5 milligrams of THC and 5 milligrams of CBD that is currently undergoing clinical trials in Europe.
