With the painting, that comprises my final art portfolio, my main intention was to convey the roundness of the shackle and chains and have them clearly contrast with the flat surface of the padlock itself, as well as to differentiate the metal texture of the padlock to the smooth surface of the wall.. To accomplish this, I made sure to include the reflective light off the round parts, giving the idea of cylinders, while leaving the flat surfaces relatively dull. To achieve a rustic metal texture, I used a technique where I put the paintbrush perpendicular to the page and dabbed rather than using conventional brush strokes, which I used to make up the back ground. I believe this nonuniform rough texture, this technique creates, gives the desired contrast of the metal pad lock to the smooth wall it sits on. To really draw the viewer to the main focus of the piece, the padlock, I have tinted the surface with hints of rust in the form of a subtle brown under coat (one that I don’t think is easily visible in the digital scan of the piece). This rust is the only deviation from the otherwise grey scale colour scheme, drawing the eye. The original reference contained a longer chain and smaller padlock. What I did is shorten the chain and enlarge the padlock to move and highlight the focus of the image. If I were to re-do this piece, I would have made the light source more clear by adding evidence of it not just in subject of the image but also in the wall that makes up the background. I would have done this up highlighting the top right corner in a whiter hue and tapering this highlight to the bottom left. Another aspect I would change is the placement of the signature to the very bottom right corner of the image as I feel its current placement distracts from the main subject of the piece.
