It was unexpected, the way it started. But she couldnβt imagine it any other way.
βGod, finallyβ¦β she exhales, locking her door and dropping her bag onto the couch. She barely has time to sit before a sharp thud hits her window.
βJesusββ
The Red Hood is on her fire escape.
Normally, she wouldnβt open her window for a stranger. But thereβs blood. And its literally the Red Hood.. controversial or not, he helps people.
So she has to help him too.
She slides the window open, eyes scanning quickly. βAre you dying?β
βNoββ He cuts himself off with a cough. Even through the mask, she knows thereβs blood.
βHold on.β Sheβs already rushing to her bathroom, grabbing her first aid kit.
βIβm fineβ¦ I just need to sit for a bitβ¦β The strain in his voice gives him away.
βStop. You need help.β
βNo, I donβt.β
βFine, no you donβt,β she snaps, already working. βIβm forcing it on you, okay? Youβre still big and tough. Just shut up and let me help before you pass out.β
She presses down on the wound, trying to slow the bleeding before wrapping the stab wound.
Even with the mask
(though it was frustrating not being able to read him)
she could tell, heβs grateful.
Out of all the people she couldβve been, she didnβt ask questions, and she let him keep his pride.
βIm gonna get you some waterβ
But the second she turned away, he vanished. Not noticing until she turned back.
βYouβre welcome!β an annoyed shout flowed out her window before she shut it. βDid i just meet the Red Hoodβ she plops down on her couch muttering to herself. βWhat a way to start the night..β
She tells herself it doesnβt matter.
But a part of her hopes that heβll come back. Leave a note. Something.
He never does.
Eventually, it fades from the front of her mind.
But not completely.
It sticks with him.
The fact that she helped with no strings attached. Like he forgot that was even possible. That there was any goodness left in Gotham.
So, as a weird way of thanking her, he adds her walk home to his patrol route.
You know. Just in case.
And yeah⦠maybe he starts getting gas at the station across from her place.
But thatβs just convenience.
Obviously.
About one week later was when their paths finally crossed again. She was on her late night snack run as always.
βHey Pete!β
she dapped the middle aged man behind the counter making his warm smile emerge.
βBusy today?β
She headed towards the coffee with her eyes practically closed like she owned the place. The man pulled out a bag of chips from the rack next to the counter like he did every night.
βnot too bad.. I think the crime is finally goin down this part of the city.β
(Was this partly due to Jason picking up patrols here? Possiblyβ¦)
βYeah? thats good.. city needs a break.β She placed her coffee down, paying the same $7.28 she always did, grabbing the bag with her other hand.
βThey talk all this shit on the news but im thinkin these kids runnin round with masks really make a difference..β
βYeah..β she says softly βyeah i think they do too.. β
βYou stay safe out there Aylin..β
βYou too.. Gβnight Peteyβ she steps out with a wave.
Thatβs when she sees the bike.
Gorgeous. Black, with red accents.
She crouches slightly, taking a closer lookβ
Then feels a presence behind her.
Before she can turnβ
βThatβs my bike.β
She straightens, turning to face him.
Tall. Broad. Built like he could break something without trying.
He sounds like heβs trying to be intimidating, but not very effective.
βSβpretty coolβ¦β she says, unfazed.
But then she notices it.
The flicker in his eyes.
Like heβs seen a ghost.
βWhat?β
βNothing.β He goes quiet, like he said too much already.
What the hell is my luck.
(then again, what did he expect being so close to her apartment.)
βUhβ¦ I have to go.β
His voice drops lower as he pulls on his helmet and swings onto the bike.
βOkayβ¦?β she says, watching him.
And just like that, heβs gone.
She blinks after him.
ββ¦Two for two on weird guys.β
