Her only hope was that she could ride out the relationship until college when she’d finally break free of the shackles from their tiny town. She’d since given up the idea of flying away with Cherry. But a small part of her heart still held out the hope that Cherry could be hers, especially with how her and Bob’s relationship seemed to be on the decline the summer of their junior year.

His drinking had gotten much worse, being one of his main ways he handled the stress of growing up and preparing for college. Marcia thought it was disgusting how he’d openly get intoxicated after promising the day to Cherry, especially because he knew what Cherry’s father was like.

“I don’t want to become my mom,” Cherry admitted, one night. She’d been awfully quiet since arriving at Marcia’s for a sleepover and it didn’t take a genius to guess it was related to Bob. Her father evoked tears out of the girl. But when it came to Bob, Cherry tended to retreat inwards as if to hide herself in the darkest corner from the world seeing how she’s truly feeling. Whenever she did that, Marcia was the only one who knew how to pull her back into the light.

“You won’t,” Marcia tried to promise as she wrapped the redhead in her fluffy comforter that reminded her of being hugged by a puppy. Cherry allowed herself to be coddled in Marcia’s embrace, shrinking her normally tall stature small enough to fit.

Marcia tucked a strand of red hair behind Cherry’s pale ear and took in her somber expression. It pained her to see her beautiful friend so broken. In moments like these, she often wondered, if circumstances were different, would it have helped Cherry to know someone else loved her the way a boyfriend was supposed to? That Bob didn’t have to be it for her? Could a kiss show Cherry that for as long as Marcia was allowed in her life, she’d never be lonely enough to become like her mother?
