Me, examining Andy, our Cheeseplant: Why do cheeseplant leaves have holes in them? There has to be some advantage, right?
Me: {takes a guess}
Me: I'm going to look it up. Someone has already figured this out, I have full confidence in the scientific community.
The Paperbark Cherry, or Tibetan Cherry Tree is known for its stunning mahogany-red bark. As the tree ages, its bark peels adding colour and texture.

My friend sent me a picture of their shop cat (he runs an antiques and collectables store - my friend, not the cat) and I replied that he was mistaken. This is no shop cat. This is a rare felis fly trap. Feed often.
Had an appointment at the docs on Friday about my blood test results, which, apart from a slightly low level of VitD, are all great! I was a bit blind sided by what he said next. 'You're depressed', he said, 'and it seems to be quite serious, given the symptoms you're experiencing'. And a conversation ensued where I learned one can be quite profoundly depressed without even realizing it. I just thought I was sick, like..dodgy thyroid or something.
So, here we are. Again. But I do feel this time I have good reasons to be depressed, given what's been going on this past year, and I'm not worried at all about wanting to quit, as A: I am quite confident that things will improve as the year goes on, and B: I just don't feel depressed. But, in the meantime, there are a couple of things I'm going to need to do right now, because it's really messed up my ability to function cognitively. 1) Get a wall calendar and write things down. EG: If I can't remember what I had for dinner 2 days ago, or have no idea what to cook/plan for meals, the reference points will help. 2) I don't care how tired I am, I am going for a walk outside every day. I enjoy it, and I should do it more.
Nothing is going to change, if I change nothing.
You can leverage anxiety and insomnia rather well when doing something like looking after a sick cat.

Well, we didn't drive up to Hull yesterday because we had to rush Fatbum to the emergency vet - she was dehydrated and had a temp of 40.01C. She was all floppy, it was awful..We legit thought she was collapsing into death, something we know is likely because of her age and her medical issues. Looong consultation later, where she was rehydrated and various other things, and we could take her home under close observation - check hourly, water, food, pee and poop. She seems better this morning, and her temperature has definitely gone down, but it seems a little on the low side now? Not shown much interest at all in her food though. We have to phone the vet with an update at 8am. Whatever happens, we cannot go to this funeral while she is so fragile, there's no-one else to watch her because they're all in Tamariu, it would cost Β£1k just to have her admitted, and no matter how true it is, 'my pet was really sick' just sounds like a damned cop out.
Driving up to Kingston Upon Hull today, and The BF, who's afraid of heights, has plotted a route to our destination that has the smallest bridge over the Humber River he can find. We're attending a funeral tomorrow. One of mine, this time.

Having spent quite some time rigging up a slug deterrent for tomato plants which involved copper tape and a small electrical current, we tested it last night by planting up a pot with a bit of lettuce, left it in a spot our nemeses are known to frequent, and set up the wildlife cam to see what happened. Now, the lettuce was in one piece this morning, which surprised both of us (it worked?) but the camera didn't work for some reason and we're a bit disappointed, ngl. We wanted to see those little bastards fail. We're gonna test it again tonight, and if the lettuce survives, we're gonna get some more tomato plants. The fourth set. Slugs took the rest.
