and it's like. how can the princess be a knight if the knights keep saving her? how can the chosen one regain their worth after turning back on their destiny? how long can the hero keep smiling and assure everyone he's good when he is bringing his own unchecked darkness and it's starting to hurt others and swallow him up? (turns out: a REALLY long time, but the brighter the light...)

kh fandom loves to clown on nomura for keeping destiny trio separate all the time but I kinda think that's the point. they're growing apart and they have to realize that's not necessarily a bad thing? the princess can't stand on her own if someone is always there to save her. the hero who relied on his connections also has to learn how to be alone. destiny will always find the chosen one and he was bound to leave that tiny island either way, with or without his friends

Its because they wanted to explore the overarching themes of Roxas’s Kh2 character arc more. Because

A. Roxas doesn’t get a ton of screen time in 2 so they’re less fleshed out than they could be. (Though for what little time they had they do a good job).

B. They’re interesting philosophical themes.

Problem is, he can’t go through the arc until 2 because it messes up the timeline.

It would be Roxas resetting the way Sora’s Lv. does every dang game. Which yeah amnesia in TT town but on the off chance you play 358 first (which I don’t recommend, but the Kh collections always have the movie listed before 2, for some reason), it does lessen the power of 2. Like Roxas, didn’t you already make peace with this in 358, why the fuck you crying on the train.

So instead we get Xion going through the arc on a much longer timescale with some added elements. Easiest way to do what they wanted and avoid any future timeline issues. Cake and eat it really.

Cause up until, idk, Khux for sure, 3D if you’re generous. There wasn’t a ton of nuance and the series had a massive show don’t tell problem. Riku always felt like an isolated case, not a “actually darkness is a neutral entity in general”. Beyond that you really only get the dream eaters being made of darkness; a plot point everyone forgets anyway?

The series would tell us these are neutral entities and not inherently good or evil, but then show us every single darkness person, bar Riku, being evil and all the light people being good. The only wrongs committed by light are either misunderstandings or Eraqus being a panicking dumb ass.

And then Khux gave us MoM and thank god. Finally a being of light who clearly does not give or gives very little shit about human morality. Bless.

Most allos put potential romantic partners above platonic ones. Meanwhile Sora puts everyone on the same level of importance. He views his relationship to Riku and Kairi as equal (regardless of which one you consider romantic-coded and which one you consider platonic-coded). There’s no distinction to him.

Sure Nomura make the outspoken and righteous girl with abandonment issues who always got left alone by everyone she cares about for one reason or another and therefor had to find strength in herself, end up entirely alone without her memories and without being able to find strength in herself because she doesnt know who "herself" even is while being simultaneously completely stripped of every piece her autonomy which screwed her perception of self up for all eternity to the point she isnt even sure if she can actually be called a human. Sure Nomura make the calm and composed guy who was willing to sacrifice his life to save his friends and other people he barely even knew, end up in a timeline where none of his friends are present and where he has to go figure out wtf to do now

Sure Nomura make the guy who cared about his sister more than anything else and promised one of his best friends to keep hope and light alive, end up forgetting all about said sister and the promise he made and ends up joining the dark side and going against everything he ever stood for. Make him abuse a sweet girl that would absolutely remind him of his sister had he not lost his memories while you are at it!
