HARD STRIPES

While I never really knew Sammy Winston, I'm thankful for the impact he created for the Bay Area hardcore scene. I have many friends who were close to him, and my heart goes out to each and every one of you. From what I knew of Sammy, he was always in it for the kids. He'd give old SpiderGhost merch to friends to give to their friends, hand out merch outside of shows, and donate old records to amoeba and other record stores. I found a few of these records in Amoeba, and got a shirt and All Bets Off magnets from mutual friends. My only interaction with Sammy was outside of a Trash Talk show a few years ago. He was doing security, where he punched me and threw me off the stage trying to dive during FYRA. I thought it was cool to get punched by him, but after the show I was with my friends and Sammy was also there. He shook my hand, apologized to me, and said that while he didn't want to push me off, he was just doing his job. He proceeded to say he loved seeing young kids like me going off like that, and wouldn't have done it if he wasn't doing security. I knew who he was, but he introduced himself, and that was that. Here's to the San Francisco beat generation. Thanks for all that you did, Sammy. NorCal forever. "A song worth singing is a song worth screaming, as a heart worth beating is a heart worth bleeding."
